President Bush and Putin Meet in Kennebunkport

President Bush meeting with Russian President Putin is being referred to as an informal meeting. My personal belief is that this meeting will be anything but casual or informal. President Bush knows it is imperative that he gains Russian approval for the next phase of sanctions on Iran. I believe that there will be measured amounts of pressure applied to get President Putin to agree to this next escalation of sanctions.

Some may believe that choosing what on the surface will appear as a casual and informal series of events at the Bush Family retreat in Kennebunkport such as a boat ride and other seemingly disarming events is as it seems. My bet is this is not the case. If the meeting were held at the Bush ranch in Crawford, then I might be swayed to it being an informal meeting. This begs the question, why are my suspicions raised by the meeting in Maine rather than Texas?

The reason is basic, President Bush the senior. The elder Bush will be there to add pressure to gain assurances from President Putin. My bet is that the former head of the CIA might know of a few sensitive areas where he can place pressure upon Putin. This is the reason for meeting Putin in the friendly climate of Kennebunkport. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Oh, one more reason for my beliefs are in this article where it refers to the fact that the elder President Bush will be meeting President Putin in New Hampshire and escorting him to Maine. Wouldn’t you love to be a fly in the cabin of that flight? I know that I sure would!

  1. Interesting perspective on GHW Bush’s role in the meeting with Putin. While I haven’t given that angle much thought, I do believe that GWH Bush would be a much stronger presence than GW Bush. My argument is that President Bush MUST stand up to Putin and re-engage Russia in dealing with the Iran issue. I’ve put some thoughts together.
