Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, Israel’s presumed “peace partner”, in a speech on Sunday to graduates of a university in Jericho, clarified that unless all of the Palestinian Authority demands are met there will not be a peace agreement with Israel. Abbas threatened there could be no agreement with Israel; we quote, “Unless all the demands and rights of our people are realized.” This is another instance of what we like to call the Palestinian official code, a special situation where the Western World’s media finds it next to impossible to translate any speech given by Islamists in the Arabic language while they find anything said in English by these same sources as front-page top-of-the-fold main-headline material. This is the reason behind the impression that the Palestinians are not only willing to make peace with Israel but that they are anxious and actively seeking avenues that lead to that peace willing to do whatever it takes to achieve peace with Israel but Israel is the side being obstinate and unwilling to make peace when the actual truth is closer to the exact opposite. All one need do to realize the truth of this situation would be to visit two media outlets which translate many of the Arabic speeches, television programs, news reports, editorials and other politically significant news which is otherwise only available in Arabic or Farsi, CAMERA (Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America) and PMW (Palestinian Media Watch). There are other sources such as some of the Israeli media which is written or translated into English, Russian, French or other languages but some would claim that Israeli sources would be biased which is why the above sources are so great, they are simply translations of the actual worlds spoken by Abbas and other Islamic leaders without commentary or slant, just straight forward translations.
In Mahmoud Abbas’s speech to the university in Jericho he revealed the intransigence of the Palestinian side in negotiations and much of what he said corroborated other leaks and comments which have come from Palestinian spokespeople regarding the current peace process talks. These negotiations are presumably being conducted under tight security with both sides held to secrecy with United States Secretary of State and the Peace Talk’s Mediator Martin Indyk insisting that neither side report on the discussions, progress, subjects discussed or any other information to the media or others not necessary to the process. This has been kept on the Israeli side to such an extent that Tzipi Livni has not even reported to many in the leadership of the ruling coalition in the government which has led to some vexation and suspicions that she may be willing to give away the store. On the other side, the Palestinians have had some apparent leaks though they have come from some in the leadership but not directly involved in the negotiations, thus one must decide if they have been informed of actual events and agreements or discussions from the negotiations or are they simply speaking for public consumption and simply telling the people what they believe they desire to hear. Still, even if Abbas’s comments in Jericho were simply soothing words spoken to soothe the masses, they are still important as these are the feelings of the Palestinian population and their leadership and therefore have consequences.
The whole body of these leaks has included some basic themes which have been repeated sufficiently that they have come to define the Palestinian position and their minimal requirements, demands, and willingness to compromise (or not). So, what are some of these positions which have been emphasized during the current talks? There has been a steady procession which has included Mahmoud Abbas, Saab Erekat and on to other spokespeople who have claimed that the Palestinians only agreed to enter negotiations after they had received written guarantees from Secretary of State Kerry and President Obama that the borders of the Palestinian state will be the pre 1967 War Armistice Lines, also known as the Green Line or Auschwitz borders. A slight variant on this is that the guarantee they received not only guaranteed the most optimistic borders but that every single demand for concessions would be guaranteed to be forced out of the Israelis and be forced to make peace completely on Palestinian dictated terms. The demand that within the borders of any Palestinian state every last Jew must be removed and never allowed within the borders for any purpose is an interesting claim they make as it stands in direct contrast to the promise that so many politicians and leaders from the Western world, United Nations and NGOs have made to the Israelis that all of the Jewish Holy Sites will be open to visitation by the Jewish people at any time they desire to visit them for prayer or any other purpose. Some of the sites which would come under Palestinian control should they actually receive borders they are demanding, the pre 1967 War lines, are the Cave of the Patriarchs, the Temple Mount, the Western Wall, Joseph’s Tomb, Rachel’s Tomb, Mount of Olives Cemetery, numerous ancient Synagogues and Tombs of Rabbis, Prophets and other Holy Forefathers as well as the cities of Jericho, Shechem, Hevron, and the Old City of Jerusalem. With these places only being visited under heavy guarded entrance using armored busses and heavy IDF escort vehicles and troops usually in the wee hours of the morning in order to minimize the threat and despite all of these precautions there are often riots arranged and waiting for the Jewish visitors as by treaty the IDF is to inform the Palestinian Authority and receive clearance before any visit. This is a far cry from protecting these sites and allowing unfettered access to all wishing to visit at any time day, night, Monday through Sunday. Allowing the Palestinians an actual internationally recognized border will only make such visitation that much more difficult if not impossible.
Many of the Palestinian leaks have reported the willingness of the Israeli negotiators, sometimes naming Tzipi Livni directly and others just claiming the Israelis have agreed to. Some examples of these statements include the removal and resettling of tens of thousands of Israelis back inside the Green Line, the division of Jerusalem, releasing all the remaining Palestinian terrorists still imprisoned in Israeli prisons, the surrender of retaining troops along the Jordan River Valley as an early detection force protecting Israel at her easternmost and best defendable geologic barrier, open border permitting free access including military trade without limitations, and the universal Right of Return to every single Palestinian refugee claimant to have their lands, homes or equivalent properties returned to them and also changing the Israeli population into an Arab majority population instead of majority Jewish population thus destroying it as the Jewish homeland. Fortunately many of these seem impossible or at least highly unlikely to have been agreed to even by Tzipi Livni. Though she may give away the store compared to the desires of the majority of the Israeli population, she is not going to leave Israel completely unable to defend itself or overrun by Arab refugees from the four corners of the globe. In some ways it matters little what results being included in the peace agreement as the Palestinian leadership ever since the inception of the PLO in 1964, that’s three years before there was any contested land and Egypt still held Gaza while Jordan held the so-called West Bank, has declared their sole intent not the formation of a Palestinian state but the eradication of Israel as the Jewish state. With the destruction of Israel as their ultimate goal, once the Palestinians have their peace and they believe they have attained the most favorable borders they are ever going to be able of receiving, then they will build up their military and terrorist infrastructures, supplies, and abilities until they believe they can attack and destroy Israel. When that day comes the world will witness a new Arab Israeli War and realize that the Zionists who maintained that the Palestinians and their Arab sponsors really wanted a destroyed Israel and not a Palestine. Should Israel be able to defend herself and things turn out as they have in the past, then we will start again with the Israelis are occupying the Palestinian homeland. Somehow I doubt that will work as efficiently the next time, but then maybe I should not be that optimistic that the world would not once again line up and demand Israel prostrate itself and succumb to the Arab demands yet again until the next war.
