Let’s Talk Turkey

A number of years ago we discussed the coming  Turkey problem for NATO and suggested that NATO needed to review Turkey’s continued membership. Of course the leaders of NATO prefer to see Turkey as the prime and proud example of democratic form of government of an Islamic nation. Through this filter it became impossible to see clearly and not the direction Turkey was heading under the continued stewardship of Prime Minister Erdogan towards Sharia rule and closer ties with Islamist interests such as Iran and the Muslim Brotherhood. Of course the support Turkey showed to the Muslim Brotherhood in the recent difficulties in Egypt after the military removed Egyptian President Morsi from power and banned the Muslim Brotherhood was received in Washington as Turkey fully supporting the position adopted by United States President Obama. This view of President Obama is just another indication of the blindness to Islamic dangers posed to the freedoms enjoyed throughout Western nations but many, if not most, of the political class appear to be completely blind to the threats emanating from Islamic extremists.

Now Turkey has taken a step which will be problematic and difficult to ignore or explain away. A Norwegian ship, the MV Princess, conducting a search for oil and gas on behalf of Greek Cyprus, an internationally recognized state, was forced to leave the area by a Turkish warship. On Saturday evening Turkey claimed the MV Princess entered a Turkish naval zone, where it was warned by the Turkish warship TCG Giresun which forced them out of the area, as reported the Turkish news source Today’s Zaman. Cyprus announced Monday its intentions to complain to the UN over the incident. “This provocative behavior by Ankara in no way affects plans to exploit the hydrocarbons of our country,” declared a Cypriot government spokesman. This is just the latest of a running string of Turkish claims of natural resources regardless of the location being in the Greek south side of the Island. This incident should sound alarm bells throughout the capitals of the NATO nations almost as loudly as should the thus far ignored courting by Turkey of close relations and alliance with Iran which had been interrupted when the Muslim Brotherhood initially won the elections in Egypt which spurred Turkish hopes of forming a Sunni alliance between Egypt and Turkey. With the banning of the Muslim Brotherhood as a terror organization by the new Egyptian military backed government, Turkey returned to their previous wooing of closer relations with Iran. This seeking close relations with Iran has continued despite the controversies over corruption and graft that have threatened to even force Erdogan from office and has claimed a number of Ministers forcing some to resign.

Turkey has had difficulties beyond Cyprus and Greece, nations with whom Turkey has had a long history of discord, clashing claims and animosities. Added to the list of nations being targeted for animosity and threats is Israel. The discord began after the Turkish government supported the IHH, a reputed human rights organization which has terrorist ties, and their flotilla to Gaza headed by the Mavi Marmara which resulted in a confrontation between terrorists who assaulted IDF forces which had boarded the Mavi Marmara to enforce an internationally recognized and legal blockade of Gaza designed to prevent arms and other terror supplies from reaching Gaza by sea. The resultant confrontation resulted in a number of injured Israeli Navy sailors and nine Turkish terrorist fatally shot. Two of the injured IDF sailors were sufficiently seriously injured that they were cashiered from service and placed on disability. This confrontation was used by Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan to drive a wedge between Turkey and Israel which has yet to be mitigated.

Perhaps this latest incident will gather sufficient attention, especially once it is addressed by the United Nations that the leadership of NATO will review the Turkish membership and the viability of such membership continuing or perhaps finally coming to terms with the changes that have been evident for many years and finally cut NATO’s ties with Turkey and its Islamist leadership. There should be little expectations that President Obama will take any steps to initiate a review of Turkey as it has been intimated that Turkey Prime Minister Erdogan is considered to be one of President Obama’s closest friends from among the community of world leaders. Perhaps this will be an opportunity for Canada to step up and take the deserved role as leader of the free world; somebody needs to take the helm which has been abdicated by Washington and President Obama. We will wait and see but doubts are serious and high that NATO will not even take the time to have a discussion, let alone take needful actions. This has been the normal operation of the Western world recently to disregard taking any principled stands or acting on principles. It is easier to just accept any behavior than it would be to take a stand and make waves as the chances of finding support is close to nil. Perhaps expecting principled actions is far too much to demand from today’s elected ruling elite which is likely because the majority of the citizenry is sleeping through life avoiding informing themselves and seeking the truths about the world around them. Hopefully they will awaken and inspect their surroundings before it becomes too late. Winston Churchill faced a similar world that dismissed him as an old man and warmonger and ridiculed him until the time came and the chances for victory slight and called him to be the savior of the world. He has stated this tendency of the people when he spoke saying, “Still, if you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than live as slaves.” Where do you think we stand today?

Palestinians Executing Planned Hijacking of Peace Process

Just as many expected, including us, the Palestinian Authority leadership had a plan all along which did not include negotiating in good faith. At the very beginning of negotiations Mahmoud Abbas and the rest of the leadership of the Palestinian Authority made a choice to demand terrorist prisoner releases over demanding yet another building freeze. When Israeli Prime Minister acquiesced and folded under pressures applied by United States Secretary of State John Kerry and President Barack Obama and agreed to release over one-hundred terrorist prisoners, even to include terrorists with the blood of innocent men, women and children on their hands, he informed the Palestinian Authority that there would be new construction beyond the Green Line largely in the areas, but not totally limited to, which both sides had previously agreed that Israel would retain through land swaps. Of course from the outset of negotiations the Palestinian negotiators and other leaders from the Palestinian Authority have pushed for a building freeze to also be imposed upon Israel. Surprisingly, United States Secretary of State John Kerry denounced this duplicity and deceitful tactic being employed by the Palestinian Authority and insisted they cease while telling the media that the Palestinians had been informed of the Israeli building plans and their indignation and protestations were simply an act.

With the newest revelation it will be interesting to see what the reaction from Secretary Kerry and President Obama to the Palestinian’s deceitful negotiating and the resignation of the negotiators complaining that Israel has not negotiated in good faith as they have refused to accept the demands of the Palestinians and have the audacity to make demands of their own. Soon after the resignation of the Palestinian negotiators Mahmoud Abbas announced the intention of the Palestinians to take their demands before the International Courts and other bodies in order to get as many world bodies, boards, assemblies, governments, NGOs and courts demanding that Israel meet every single Palestinian demand while nothing will be expected, let alone demanded, of the Palestinians. This was their plan from the start and they have simply been waiting for an appropriate Israeli action to pull the rug from under the negotiations and set out on their world tour demanding that the world force Israel’s surrender. They claimed the recent announcement to build additional housing largely within Jerusalem to help mitigate the pain the prisoner release was generating was the Israeli transgression which forced the Palestinians to find the negotiations to be useless and a complete sham. Now the Palestinians will seek friendlier channels to attain validation of their demands and have an ultimatum placed on Israel to surrender on every single front instead of seeking a resolution through negotiations with Israel as laid out in United Nations Security Council Resolution 242 and numerous other resolutions and petitions.

The Israeli announcement of intent to build was not the actual reason behind the Palestinian actions as they had been previously informed of the plans to continue building and had chosen terrorist releases in lieu of a building freeze. The Palestinians would have used any Israeli action which they could put forth an injured face which had suffered a grievous insult. They could use the fact that Jews have been permitted onto the Temple Mount even in the limited numbers and under strict supervision by the Islamic Waqf simply by claiming that the Jews had attempted to enter the al-Aqsa Mosque causing a horrid blaspheme against the Palestinian people and the whole of Islam just as they had used the visitation to the Temple Mount by Ariel Sharon in order to validate the Second Intifada which resulted in the murder of over a thousand Israelis. The Palestinians have been proven to fabricate out of thin air a grievance to validate their actions which would otherwise be found unacceptable. Somehow whatever the Palestinians claim as the validating sin committed by the Israelis to permit their violence, rioting, or hijacking the peace process to take it to international bodies, often the United Nations General Assembly where they know they have a guaranteed amen chorus that will grant them anything they request, is automatically considered to be the unchallengeable truth by a sizeable majority of nations who would never find any need to challenge or ask for corroborative evidence. The Palestinians could just as easily used the destruction of the weapons in Latakia, Syria preventing them from being transferred to Hezballah in Lebanon by Israel recently.

The only thing that remains to be seen is whether the United States will back their planned nine months of negotiating in good faith and demand the Palestinian return to the negotiations or simply allow the Palestinians to take their grievances on a world tour seeking validation and allies to apply pressures upon the Israelis. The world’s reactions are predictable as can be, especially since we have historical evidence from previous such fiascos committed in the name of Palestinian statehood. There is always a possibility that President Obama might take the Palestinian’s side and decide that the time has come to allow a Chapter Seven backed Security Council Resolution being implemented to force a solution on Israel. If this avenue is chosen we can expect that the decision will be to use the Green Line as the border for the Palestinian State. The unknown is whether there will also be a measure demanding that Israel repatriate the so-called Palestinian refugees erasing the Jewish majority in Israel. A Chapter Seven Resolution can be enforced by military force of arms which would make any Israeli refusal to surrender before such a decree have extremely serious consequences. The one looming and very ominous shadow darkening the whole Israel-Arab, this is the real conflict and not Palestinians, conflict over recognition of Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish State and not be under Islamic control and rule is the fact that time is running out on President Obama’s second term and he has a deadly determination that he will solve the Middle East’s presumed biggest problem even if he has to completely destroy Israel in the process, or maybe in order to destroy Israel with the process. The reasoning that President Obama would resort to brute force that would compromise Israel probably out of existence as a home for the Jews comes directly from his actions early on in his first term. Let’s review some of the highlights of President Obama’s jewels that he launched that damaged Israel to an extent that has yet to be determined. First was the idea of a building freeze followed soon thereafter by statements which declared that the United States position was that the borders for the Palestinian state should be the Green Line including the division of Jerusalem which was only subsequently backed off to allow for small mutually agreed land swaps which still allowed for the Palestinians to merely refuse to make any swaps to gain the entirety of their territorial demands. Then there is the litany of insults and offenses heaped upon Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu by President Obama personally. The President insisted that Prime Minister Netanyahu enter and depart the White House for their first meeting by a side entrance and not the main front entrance and also refusing to stand before the press after their meeting. The second meeting had similar insult including no press conference. On another occasion President Obama left Prime Minister Netanyahu and his party telling them he needed to go and have dinner with his family and that the Prime Minister and his aides should use the time to review the areas where the two disagreed and demanded that when Netanyahu came around he should tell one of the President’s aides who would then inform Obama that he could return and collect the surrender of principles by the Israeli leader. President Obama during the ceremonies for the opening session of the United Nation General Assembly during President Obama’s first term where the President claimed to be unable to find time in order to meet Prime Minister Netanyahu but then appeared for around a half an hour on the television show “The View” which was being broadcast from a studio in New York City. And the final example, though not the last if this was to be a complete list, was President Obama insisting, could even say forcing, Prime Minister Netanyahu to call and apologize to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan over the incident concerning the Israeli legal, even according to the United Nations, interception of the ship the Mavi Marmara which was being used by terrorists in an attempt to either break the embargo on Hams in Gaza or have a violent confrontation with Israeli forces hoping to kidnap or kill as many Israeli soldiers as possible. Even before the violent confrontation it has been revealed that the terrorists had made plans on the best possible way to carry out the ambush and had prayed and chanted slogans calling for victory over the infidel or martyrdom in the cause of Islam and in the service of Allah. President Obama very likely knew that his self-proclaimed best friend in the world, Recep Erdogan, would not accept the apology and would simply use it in future propaganda statements and speeches and otherwise turn his shoe soles towards Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and all of Israel. How any friend of Israel could support President Obama is overwhelmingly absurd.

There are a number of reasons working together, any one of which is sufficient to turn President Obama’s hearing off when Netanyahu gives any warnings about the Middle East or even the greater world. The major impetus behind the wall President Obama has placed to block Netanyahu out derives from the belief in President Obama’s mind that he knows more about what is happening in the Middle East and who can be trusted and which leaders he needs to woo and that his being raised in Indonesia gives him experiences and an innate knowledge which he believes will prove him correct in the end. Part of this insider knowledge that President Obama relies on is his familiarity with Islamic beliefs and society of Indonesia of his youth. No matter how many experts make claims that the form of Islam practiced in Indonesia at the time that President Obama resided there was completely different than the forms of Islam being practiced today in the Middle East and North Africa as well as the Islamist Madrassas around the Western World, President Obama is determined to prove that he knows best. President Obama’s pridefulness and inability to admit to his own mistakes, especially in matters concerning the Middle East and the Islamic World make for a combination where changing his perceptions on such subjects is simply impossible. The best examples of the President’s inability to adapt or incorporate new information if it does not fit his carefully crafted view of how he believes things to be can be found in Egypt and Turkey as well as the obvious, Israel.

In Egypt President Obama still holds to the policy which dictates that the Muslim Brotherhood is, as then Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said at a House Intelligence Committee hearing, “The Muslim Brotherhood is a very heterogeneous group, largely secular.” Group that “has eschewed violence and has decried Al Qaeda as a perversion of Islam” and “have pursued social ends, a betterment of the political order in Egypt.” He added that the Muslim Brotherhood, which has branches in many Muslim countries, has “no overarching agenda, particularly in pursuit of violence, at least internationally.” President Obama also believes that the Freedom and Justice Party’s President Morsi won the first elections after the removal of former strong man and American longtime ally President Mubarak in a totally free election in which there were no improprieties despite evidence to the contrary and that the fact that the Muslim Brotherhood was the most organized and the only group in a position to organize and conduct a coherent campaign and thus guaranteed to win the election. President Obama has also chosen to ignore the fact that Egyptian people in the tens of millions protested, signed petitions and carried out the most massive popular revolution calling for the removal of President Morsi. The protests to remove President Morsi were actually larger and more invigorated than those a little over a year earlier which dethroned Mubarak. President Obama prefers to believe and act as if the Egyptian Military acted solely on their own without any mandate from the people and has even gone so far as to blame all of the violence on the Egyptian Military totally absolving the Muslim Brotherhood of any guilt. Any casual observer of the violence being perpetrated against the Egyptian people, especially the Coptic Christians and any non-Sunni Muslims would easily see the evidence that the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda are behind much of the violence evidenced by the black flag and the Muslim Brotherhood banner being carried by the gangs violently attacking the people and intentionally attempting to destroy Egypt if they are not returned to power.

Then there is Turkey and President Obama’s declared bestest friend in the Middle East, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. As we noted close to a decade ago and has been commented upon by numerous Middle Eastern experts, Prime Minister Erdogan has been slowly but surely moving the Turkish governance from a secular governance into a Sharia governance. Prime Minister Erdogan had warned Egyptian President Morsi very early in his time in office that he should emulate the example that Prime Minister Erdogan had used in Turkey of small increments and taking one’s time and not rushing or pushing the people too quickly so that they did not revolt to the sudden changes and the potentially unpopular proponents of Sharia. Morsi did not listen and if the violent protests which have gripped Turkey of late are any evidence, even taking the slow but steady change from secular to Sharia did not prove successful either. Add to this that the reaction from the Turkish government was just announced by the Justice and Interior ministries that people can now be jailed if they think about protesting against the government. Meanwhile, as the Egyptian Military is backing the temporary government by destroying the majority of smuggling tunnels from the Sinai into the Hamas stronghold of Gaza in order to prevent Hamas, an arm of the Muslim Brotherhood formed to attack Israel, from smuggling terrorists back into the Sinai to attack Egyptian villages and military outposts, Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan has invited and met for the third time this past year Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal. Of course this does not appear to cause President Obama any concern as he just announced a $200 million program under which Turkey and Qatar will develop materials aimed at promoting the Muslim Brotherhood’s Islamist agenda while cutting off military aid to Egypt until they reinstate Muslim Brotherhood representative Morsi to the Presidency. Also, do not expect any apology any time in the foreseeable future to come from President Obama to Prime Minister Netanyahu for forcing him to apologize to Prime Minister Erdogan over the actions on the blockade runner Mavi Marmara where nine terrorists died after they posed a fatal threat as they attacked Israeli Special Forces who boarded the ship to enforce the blockade with paintball guns loaded with pepper-balls and were attacked with knives, steel rods, and other small arms. The closest that Turkey has come to making any return gesture to Israel has been complete and rudely given refusals to accept the apology and the obvious warming gestures with Hamas which may soon result with Hamas moving their headquarters from Qatar to Turkey.

Further proof of President Obama’s affections for the Muslim Brotherhood has been obvious in Syria where the only thing preventing full United States support of the Rebel forces has been the warnings and threats from Russia and China. The only times that President Obama has taken steps which may have proven advantageous for Syrian dictator President Bashir al-Assad has been the leaking of information proving the suspicions that Israel had been behind attacks that prevented the transfer of chemical weapons, advanced anti-air and anti-ship missiles presumably supplied by Russia, and other advanced weapons systems or game changing weapons that provided significant upgrades to Hezballah’s abilities. The sole threat of American intervention came in a threat to Syrian President al-Assad primarily when President Obama said, “We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus. That would change my equation.” This brought about the now infamous backpedaling and stalling until Russian President Putin supplied President Obama a get untangled from your tongue alternative which he, of course, took immediately. Of course, many have pointed out that Syria is a no win proposition and what would probably serve the future best would be a prolonged conflict where the civilians who remain were permitted to leave or be provided safe-zones and eventually have, strangely enough, President al-Assad remain in power even if he ruled a small area while the rest of Syria was divided between the Kurds and the other forces. The one result we would like to have from all the turmoil and violence, especially in Syria and Iraq, would be a Kurdish state combining the Kurdish controlled areas in northern Iraq and north-east Syria, but that may simply be a dream as the Kurds have historically been treated poorly and denied their promised homeland simply because J. P. Getty wanted the central Iraqi oil fields which was within the areas promised the Kurds after World War I, and one thing anybody familiar with the broken promises to the Jews after World War I knows is just how unfairly the British were with the Kurds.

The final country which President Obama has taken as far back a seat as possible allowing even the Europeans to show definitively more leadership than he, is Iran. Yes, after years of wrestling with the Europeans President Obama has been dragged to a point where the sanctions on Iran are having their intended effect. The Iranians, masters in chess and the art of deception, have played their hand masterly with their choice of Hasan Rouhani as their new President and face before the world. He contrasts with former President Ahmadinejad nearly perfectly and has been hailed by an overanxious West as the revelation of a new and open Iran. He has been hailed as approachable and having shown an honest intention to make changes and reveal the entirety of the Iranian nuclear program with an honesty that will be unquestionable. This is all well and good except that it is a complete and total fabrication. President Hasan Rouhani was formerly the lead negotiator for the Iranians in their nuclear talks and as such he glad-handed and smiled his way adroitly avoiding revealing anything about the Iranian nuclear program as he also oversaw the installation of thousands of centrifuges. He was proven to be a masterful deceiver who was well spoken and had a full understanding of the West and the weaknesses of each person with whom he would need to deal. Adding to this is the fact that absolutely nothing has changed in the actual power structure in Iran. They have the same Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who is the real power and very likely the person most responsible for Hasan Rouhani’s election. The twelve on the Council of Guardians, six of whom are appointed by the Supreme Leader, have not changed and were responsible for choosing who would be permitted on the ballot in the elections. Since virtually all of the real power rests with the Council of Guardians and the Supreme Leader, nothing in Iran has changed except they have a new puppet to place on the world stage and apparently that is sufficient for a Western World who wish to find any reason to avoid having to face the facts that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons and is very likely to either use them or threaten their use in order to have a nuclear umbrella that guards their terrorist attacks across the globe. President Obama sees in Iran his chance to receive another Nobel Peace Prize and honestly believes his oratory abilities will sway the Iranians from their pursuit of nuclear weapons. The only times that President Obama might decide to take any real actions against Iran would be in order to force concessions from Prime Minister Netanyahu to the Palestinian. Even then his promise will more likely be broken and in the end if the negotiations do not produce the result he envisions as equitable and fair final peace treaty, which is the complete capitulation by Israel of all lands and every one of the Palestinian demands even including some form of Right of Return for millions of Palestinian refugees, President Obama is considering forcing a peace of his liking on the Israelis even if it requires a Chapter VII Security Council Resolution granting the Palestinians the entire enchilada with the threat of military enforcement by the nations willing to enforce the United Nation edict. President Obama is going to be the first man in history to win the Nobel Peace Prize before he did anything to earn it and then his efforts to prove he deserved it resulting in starting World War III. What a legacy.
