Let us start with Congress with the presumption that the Republicans will control the Senate as well as the House of Representatives. The Republican leadership, in particular the establishment mainstream Republicans, will very likely misread the opportunity and expectations of them by the American public and especially their base voters and spend all their energies and debates in attempts to bring down President Obama whether through directly attempting to impeach him and failing or by endless hearings against President Obama himself and other members past and present of his administration. There is a definite probability that they would attempt to bring former Attorney General Eric Holder, assuming he ever is replaced which nobody appears to be in any great hurry to find a replacement. Between Fast and Furious and the rest of the litany of assumed misdeeds the Republicans could spend most of the last two years of President Obama’s terms simply holding hearings on Holder and Benghazi, their two favorite subjects for attacking the President. Such a scenario would be the greatest waste of time and missing of opportunity in the history of politics.

The Republicans, should they control both houses but not have sufficient numbers to override Presidential vetoes, they should still pass the bills which the American people would see as taking responsible approaches to actually get the government out of the way of the economic engine allowing it to adjust to the situation as it exists and slowly rev up and begin to produce jobs and economic activities which have been moribund for the past six years plus back to the last year and a half of the George W. Bush Presidency. They should not bother trying to repeal or modify the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obama Care) as such would be a waste of their efforts and not actually showcase their agenda should they ever gain the kind of situation which President Obama enjoyed and squandered; the complete control over the entirety of government with the White House and majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives plus their Senate majority was filibuster proof as they held over sixty seats. The Republicans should have debates to display their agenda for two to three weeks on each grand piece of legislation which would make the core of a government where they were allowed to freely pass their agenda. By having open hearings and discussions they might also be able to get the media to cover these legislative deliberations, even should they attempt to portray them in a negative light, thus placing them before the American public. Granted such a plan depends on the ability and desire of the American public to care about the workings of the Congress and actually see through any slant in the media. Unfortunately, we are more likely to witness the Republicans waste their opportunity and as a result the Democrats might be able to win back the Senate and maybe even the House of Representatives as well as retaining the White House as a result of the 2016 elections, but more on this later.

President Obama after the election will have even less reason to remain even slightly limited by the Constitution. The President has already shown complete contempt for the Republican controlled House of Representatives and even to ignore the will of the Democratic controlled Senate. This disregard for any convention or limitation will permit President Obama to work on completing the rest of his promises to fundamentally change the United States of America. His intent to mold the United States in his image is just another reflection of his narcissism which knows no boundaries and once the final election which might have any effect upon his ability to rule and rule absolutely, President Obama will finally be cut loose to enact the edicts by Presidential use of a pen and the phone to those minions who he can rely upon to take to the streets if necessary and cause sufficient disturbance to allow him to continue writing executive order after order as he intends. The areas where President Obama would have the greatest influence should he choose is in the makeup of the General staffs of the military since he can request the resignation of any General at his pleasure. He could then replace them with people from within the military who would be more accepting to his desires to limit the use of the military outside of the United States and with no regard to consequences or treaty start redeploying all the military personnel either back home or someplace where their capabilities are least necessary such as the deployment to West Africa to presumably assist with the fight against Ebola. Exactly how combat troops are supposed to engage and fight microscopic targets is beyond my meager ability to figure, but I am sure the President gave them orders which would address such difficulties. But the military is the least of the areas where President Obama could enforce his will.

There is the possibility that should the Democrats lose their majority in the Senate that during the current Senate’s lame duck session that Senate Majority Leader Reid could call them back to Washington for an emergency session because a number of Supreme Court Justices had retired such as Justice Ruth Joan Bader Ginsburg who is of advanced age and suffers from cancer. Then President Obama could send candidates for ratification and as Senator Harry Reid used the nuclear option which now allows for confirmation of Presidential appointees to only require a majority decision for cloture, thus ending any chance for filibuster, which forces an immediate confirmation vote. President Obama and such a session of the Senate could very easily place as many new and young very leftist Justices onto the Supreme Court as Justices retired allowing such appointments. President Obama could really let loose the Environmental Protection Agency and other Cabinet posts and departments to enact regulations using even the flimsiest of authorizations from actual laws. We might even become aware of other surprises ensconced within the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act mega-legislative effort. Remember former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s comment that we had to pass the bill to find out what was in the bill. What else might be hidden in the language of the over two thousand pages of the legislation now law that would allow for more malfeasance.

The real problem that arises is, with a compliant Attorney General willing to simply cover up for anything the President or members of his Cabinet or other appointees placed throughout government as well as those willing to act in accordance with the instructions of those who will be tasked with carrying out any edicts or regulatory enactments which originate with the White House and relayed down a pipeline of favorable and willing and dependable government employees, all of whom will have sufficient time in service, this allows all to be completely safe from consequences while performing and enacting new regulations. This is an area where President Obama and his appointees making up his administration including the various Secretaries in the Cabinet as well as the numerous Czars which were not reviewed nor approved by Senate confirmation remaining un-vetted yet holding great power and sway with some even having more influence than the Cabinet Secretaries who presumably held the sole supervisory over their departments thus allowing the President to rewrite regulations almost at will. Exactly how far President Obama is willing and planning to go in remaking the United States is an unknown that will be revealed over the remaining two years of his Presidency with the first hints coming early next year and possibly a little earlier, all depending on election results and how willing the President might be and how far he would risk going. Whatever the coming events, it will prove to be interesting and the only actual unknown is how exciting and challenging these coming events will prove. As the ancient Chinese curse goes, “May you live in interesting times,” and we certainly do live in such times.

While we are predicting the future let’s peek into my crystal ball and see who might end up as the Democrat candidate for President in the 2016 election cycle. I might try to also include the Republican candidate but with so many unannounced and almost ready to runs, that prediction is going to have to wait until the field has been decided though I can predict which politicians will not be the republican candidate. A quick rundown of the Republicans who will not appear on the 2016 final ballot are Jeb Bush, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Chris Christie and Speaker of the House John Boehner for starters. Now on to the Democrat candidates and the somewhat controversial prediction. Almost everybody has placed their chips on Hillary Clinton and with her latest appearance and her apparent new improved look, they have good reason to choose her. The problem is the voice and the speeches are still Hillary Clinton who was initially tainted by some claiming she only married Bill to ride his coattails to prominence and this was only reinforced by her run for Senate in New York, a state where she had barely taken up residence. Then Hillary Clinton has also been tainted by her inept performance at Secretary of State and especially the Benghazi slaughter of four Americans including Ambassador Stevens and his aid as well as two security personnel and former seals who put up a heroic fight while waiting for the cavalry to come over the hilltop in the nick of time. That cavalry never was permitted to even mount up let alone ride to the rescue. The echo of, “What did you do during the Benghazi nightmare and why was there not more security since you knew there were potential problems and a definitive threat of an attack?” Because of the obvious candidacy of Hillary Clinton and the reputation of the Clintons for not appreciating those who choose to oppose them, just ask the Obamas, there will be few Democrats rushing to compete with Hillary Clinton. There is one exception and she is a candidate whose history depicts a woman who is not easily cowed and is bold enough to have made obviously fictitious claims in order to gain scholarship and more and now sits as United States Senator for Massachusetts. As you have likely guessed or know, the person I believe will win the Democrat nomination for President is Elizabeth Warren, Native American deriving her family having Cherokee and Delaware Indian heritage, listed herself as a minority in professional directories. Yet she questionably denied that she ever tried to gain a professional advantage through her lineage. Still, Elizabeth Warren has the near perfect liberal progressive credentials and presents herself well and has a similar experience to President Obama when he first sought the White House against Hillary Clinton as well. Further, the United States low information voters and some easily swayed voters who simply desire to be a part of the majority and will follow a sweeping trend just to be considered in with their peer groups will vote for a good story line repeated in the media and popular culture spots such as social media and comedy news reports. This may prove to be a part of the Presidential election cycle should either party, particularly if it is the Democrats, should place a woman at the top of their ticket, then they may tap into the desire of the American public to crash and break down all of the remaining barriers they perceive to remain in their societal history. Despite the seeming problems which have accompanied President Obama, there will be those more than willing to place a woman in the White House; and not only a woman, but a Native American woman making Elizabeth Warren potentially the first self-proclaimed Native American President and the first woman President. How can that combination possibly lose? My only request is please do not kill the messenger if this message proves incorrect; I tried and took the chance and now wait for the dice to stop spinning.

Who is ahead in the different races depends on the state and even on the political leanings of the news or talk shows one follows. If you go to polling it gets even more confusing. Not only are the polls often slanted depending on who ordered the polling but it also depends on what the subject the poll is covering. Here are a few examples from some polls. A CBS poll recently showed that fifty percent of those responding said the Democrats are the party that “cares more about the needs and problems of people” while only 34 percent chose the Republicans. Meanwhile, the Republicans have a nine point lead concerning the economy, an eleven point lead on foreign policy and a twenty-one point lead on addressing terrorism in an October CBS poll. So, who wins; the party of the people or the party which appears to be more competent? These numbers are nothing new as often the Democrats have polled well on sympathy and feeling the people’s pains while the Republicans historically win on foreign policy and confronting threats from the outside world. The fact the Republicans are polling slightly ahead of Democrats on the economy is not nationally definitive enough to be applied to every race. The probability is that in the traditionally Democrat leaning states the Democrats will probably poll even or ahead of the Republicans while in traditionally Republican states the Republicans will poll ahead. The place where that mere nine point lead for the Republicans becomes evident will be in what is often referred to as the ‘purple’ states where the parties have split the wins between them would thus likely give the Republicans a slight lead on the economy. Unfortunately that may not transfer to votes as there is also the personality of the candidates as well as the effectiveness of their campaigns and whether there are third party or independent candidates on the ballot and from which side they will draw away votes. Libertarian and Constitution Party candidates tend to take more votes from Republicans while Green and sometimes Libertarian Party take more votes from the Democrats. But other than their campaign, their affability or their campaign commercials and use of media and social networks, the most important determining item will simply be which party gets the voters to the polls, period.

With this year not being a Presidential election year, the national party machines are operating but there are far fewer volunteers and fewer funds for them to make a large determining difference. This means that it will be up to the State and even more local party machines and the candidate supporting campaign staff which will make up a significant part of the get out the vote efforts. States with Gubernatorial elections this election will have more party influence than those without. What makes these midterms so difficult to make predictions is because there is no real enthusiasm evident in the electorate and it is very possible that both of the major parties will suffer from miserable voter turnout and thus calling the elections near impossible. There will be some states where polling data is so skewed to one candidate that there is almost no challenge to picking the likely winner short of an unseen stumble where the leading candidate is caught in a criminal act or other compromising situation. They do not even need to actually be guilty as that will depend on a court of law, but such accusations can sway the court of public opinion and that is exactly what elections are, the court of public opinion choosing those they feel are less guilty of potentially bad leadership. That has been the truth in all too many elections in the United States in recent times where people are literally trying to choose which evil is less harmful. Some have gotten to the point that they have finally refused to vote for the lesser from two evils and they refuse to ever again vote for evil no matter how slight. These voters are demanding the parties to put forth candidates who are capable of leading and representing the people with integrity and virtue. This might even lead to making a third party or independent candidate to have a real possibility to take elections and possibly change the American political landscape once again. Perhaps it is time for a new political movement as the last great movement was the Abolition Movement which birthed the Republican Party and the Whig Party was laid to rest. The more likely bet is that the two major parties have so slanted and poisoned the election laws throughout the United States that it has become next to impossible for any third party or independent candidate to make the ballot, let alone have any funds remaining should they manage to make ballot, and trust I know from where I speak. This is really a sad problem as this may prevent a new direction to be proposed and placed before the American electorate and instead continue forcing them to choose between two toxins, progressive Democrats who want to double the size of government every decade, or the progressive Republican who wishes to slow government growth so that it doubles only four or five times each century. Since both the major parties are in favor of growing government and the sole difference is exactly the rate of growth the American people can rest assured that over time the Republicans will seem like the Democrats of a few decades back while the Democrats will be breaking new ground which the Republican will fall in love with a few decades hence. Should this trend not be reversed soon the United States will continue in decline and only accelerate with time.

Rifts Becoming More Accentuated Between American and Israeli Jews

There have been differences between the Jews in Israel and their counterparts in the American Diaspora and these differences have been becoming more obvious making the two groups more distant. It is becoming likely that the two largest populations of Jews on planet Earth are going in diametrically opposed directions with the Jews in the United States becoming more assimilated and less religious while the Jews in Israel are moving closer to Torah observance and less concerned with whatever differences may exist between the increased importance of religious belief within Israel when compared to the trends throughout the rest of the Western World. These differences are evident in other areas which, when investigated more closely, can be traced back to the shift towards religion in Israel and the increasing separation from religion throughout the West.

The number of children has fallen in the West and is below replacement level through much of Europe and among other population groups within the developed world while in Israel and the developing world religion is increasingly important and their populations are growing, not shrinking. This also results in an older average population and increasingly larger segments of the population being immigrants who come from lands where custom, religion and almost every important theme in life are very different and foreign causing great friction between these two populations as they increasingly find themselves competing for control of the society and its norms. In Israel the population is increasing which relieves them of the increased strife of a burgeoning immigrant population slowly becoming the majority in the society. But what are the most evident signs of any real attitudinal differences between these two major Jewish populations which one can readily see?

One very easy to measure difference was made so very evident in the latest United States Presidential election where Israeli Jews supported Mitt Romney casting over 80% of their ballots for the Republican candidate while the Jews in the United States supported the reelection of President Obama with 69% of their votes. Even more telling was a race in New Jersey which pitted Orthodox Rabbi Shmuley Boteach in a race for the 9th District against a very liberal Democrat candidate, Bill Pascrell. Rabbi Shmuley Boteach lost the race by over three to one margin, 22.8% (29,214) for the Rabbi and 76.1% (97,646) for his opponent. This split between American Jews and Israeli Jews can also be found in their perceptions of politics in Israel. Where Benyamin Netanyahu is heavily favored to be reelected as the Prime Minister of Israel and the Knesset is very likely to result in not only a stronger swing to the conservative agenda but also to see a definitive increase in the religious Zionist party representation, this is trending in the opposite direction from their American counterparts who are almost unified in their liberal, progressive political tendencies. This is largely rejected by Jewish Americans who many feel revolted by Prime Minister Netanyahu and reject the conservatism and religiosity of their fellow Jews in Israel. What could possibly be driving such a disconnect between the Jews of the United States from the Jews of Israel?

The most significant driving factor by far is the relationship and attitudes of the two Jewish populations to Torah observance and in their feeling of a connection with G0d and feeling that this connection is an intricate and defining force in their lives. The religious sector of society in Israel has been making significant gains in numbers which was made infinitely evident with the celebrations of Daf Yomi seven-year study cycle of the Talmud which was staged in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and other places around the world early this past August and was the largest such celebration of participants in modern history. In Israel the religious Zionist political parties and the straight religious parties have both been slowly gaining numbers while the far left liberal Meretz Party has seen falling numbers in membership and representation in the Israeli Knesset. Meanwhile, in the United States the Jewish population, with the exception of the shrinking Orthodox Jews, has been increasingly turning more and more secular in their nature and intermarriage is reaching threatening levels that may lead to a more rapid vanishing of the American Jews. The religious services and traditions of both the conservative and Reform Jewish congregations have seen their services slowly contain less and less Hebrew while the amount performed in English has increased. Less American Jews keep a Kosher home or strictly observe the Sabbath admonitions and limitation and drive automobiles; turn on and off lights; use their computers, televisions, microwaves, stoves, ovens and other devices; and do not spend the day in prayer, study, and complete rest from normal daily activities. Recently in Israel a group of secularist Jews in a suburb of Tel Aviv attempted to force the permitting of public transportation to be provided on the Sabbath and ran into a massive wave of opposition and the referendum was soundly defeated. The ever widening gulf between the Jews in Israel and in the United States is evident in every aspect of life. It permeates through their lives, religious observance, politics, societal norms, and just about anything else one may choose to observe.

There is something which appears to be paralleling the falling away from their religious center by the Jews in the Western industrialized world, and that is an overriding concern placing Israel above all other concerns. It is as if these Jews have forgotten Yerushalayim and who would not be able to identify with the sorrow and feeling of an emptiness expressed in the “Song of Babylon” which is also known as Psalm 137. Instead, these Jews are concerned about abortion rights, homosexual marriage, assisted suicide, minorities’ rights and other leftist concerns. What is distressing is the number of liberal leaning Jews who have not only lost their love of Israel and no longer live for Jerusalem but have gone over to the opposing side and support those who claim that Zionism is a form of racism, Israel is practicing apartheid, the Jews of Israel stole the land from the Palestinians who lived in their own country peaceably before 1948, and support the BDS movement (Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions) against Israel as well as supporting the Palestinian claim to their “Right of Return” thus supporting the end of the Jewish State. There is a prediction which some believe is approaching, myself included, namely that there is fast approaching a crucial change and time of choosing for the Jews of much of the West. Things are slowly building where those who are Jewish are going to face a choice, adopt Zionism and go love in Eretz Yisroel or forget their Jewishness and adopt a secular humanist life devoid of religion in the traditional sense. Truth is that secular humanism as it is now pursued has become a religion itself. The branches of the secular humanist religion run the entire range of liberal and progressive political beliefs. The time where there are a significant number of practicing Jews outside of Israel is coming to an end and Israel will likely soon be the entirety of the future of the Jewish peoples.
