The immediate response when told that Hamas is the future of the Palestinian efforts to destroy Israel is people ask if you have missed the news that Hamas was dissolved and that the Palestinian Authority won and has taken their position as the leaders of all of the Palestinian Arabs, both the West Bank, actually named Judea and Samaria, and Gaza in a unity government with Mahmoud Abbas at its head. That is what the news has reported but then again that same news claims that Israel started the last Gaza War despite the abduction and murder of three Israeli teens by Hamas terrorists followed by two weeks of accelerating rockets raining on Israeli communities before Israel fired a single shot. But don’t trouble the news media with trivial facts as they would only serve to confuse them. So, rather than write more letters to the editor, why don’t we share some facts about the premature announcement of the death of Hamas. The story starts about a year ago when the Egyptians destroyed unbelievable numbers of smuggling tunnels which Hamas had taxed to provide them with their operational budgets. Hamas had much of its terror financing provided by Iran and Qatar but still had the operational budget to cover their governance of Gaza. It was that operational budget which put Hamas into a bind from which it had no escape, so they decided to simply surrender and gift the Palestinian Authority with the burden of ruling and managing the day to day governance of Gaza. This also placed the numerous months of unpaid salaries for Gaza government employees before Mahmoud Abbas and the new unity government. Freed from having to govern and provide for Gaza, Hamas immediately turned to what it does best, attacking Israel and committing terrorist offensives all in the name of Allah and being financed and supplied and even oft times directed and managed by Iran and Qatar. So now the Palestinian Authority gets to run the day to day drudgery of managing the entirety of the Palestinian Arab population including meeting salaries of excessively over-bloated government heavily tilted to security and police forces as it also must provide for the Fatah terrorist arms.

As a parting gift, Hamas forced the Gaza war with Israel which resulted in great amounts of destruction throughout Gaza which now has become the responsibility of the Palestinian Authority and the unity governance to direct all the reconstruction while Hamas continues to conduct its terror war. Hamas did pay a price in Gaza for their forcing the war with Israel and many Gazans hold great amounts of resentment against Hamas for their forcing three wars with Israel within the first decade since the Israeli disengagement, an event which was supposed to provide Gazans with a great and promising future only to be destroyed by Hamas initially by their military takeover of Gaza and then its three wars with Israel. Now that Hamas has surrendered Gaza to the Palestinian Authority, the displeasure with the lack of repairs, rebuilding and reestablishing of a functioning economy now falls inevitably to the Palestinian Authority who has had the entire responsibility placed in their lap. On the other hand, Hamas won far more support all across the West Bank and even with those fanatics in Gaza due to their fighting with Israel while the Palestinian Authority appears to be cooperating with Israel by comparison. Hamas has taken on the mantle of the strong horse compared to the Palestinian Authority appearance as the tired and beaten horse. The war with Israel was intentionally initiated by Hamas so as to gain popularity in the one place where they had no direct influence, the West Bank. This was accomplished through the war with Israel and their claims to have won the war simply by surviving and, according to their propaganda, forcing Israel to retreat from Gaza allowing Hamas to turn Gaza over to the unity government. Then they have made grand demands in order to make peace and by refusing to sign anything less again could claim to have resisted Israel and as no peace or agreement has been signed to have defeated Israel and embarrassed Israel on the world stage. Whether any of these claims are actually true matters little, just being able to make such claims will serve the Hamas propaganda goals and give them an advantage whenever the elections for the new parliament and leadership take place to takeover rule from the temporary government put in place as a placeholder from the time when Hamas acquiesced to the formation of a unity government and the formation of the new unity government which will rule all of the Palestinian Arab population across the West Bank and Gaza. Hamas has been playing for the advantage in these elections since a good year before they appeared to collapse and be forced to allow the Palestinian Authority take over rule in Gaza from Hamas and their plans continue on pace for any eventuality where the elections will finally be held.

Hamas is now freed of the tawdry tedium of ruling Gaza and are completely freed to conduct their continuing terror war against Israel and by so, campaigning for the eventual elections for the unity government. They no longer need bother themselves with collecting taxes from smuggling tunnels, especially since digging such tunnels after Egypt has collapsed them and often even filled them with water from the Mediterranean Sea, which provided funds for governing Gaza and paying the payrolls which they had been falling ever further behind. They simply had to take the funding and supplies provided by Iran and Qatar and consume themselves purely with conducting their terror war. The recent murder of the four Rabbis during morning prayers in Jerusalem along with severely injuring a half dozen others and murdering a Druze police officer who rushed in as the first officer to arrive in a heroic attempt to save those who he might be able was perpetrated by Hamas using terrorists from the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine) terrorists, a terror group which some have claimed has been subsumed by Hamas as have other older and smaller terror entities. The rioting on the Temple Mount has been paid for and choreographed by Hamas despite the instigations made by Mahmoud Abbas which he has been spouting in a feeble attempt to take credit for the violence as he knows that without such credit he will have no possibility of winning any future elections. The drive-by terrorist attacks where Palestinian Arab drivers ran through crowds waiting for the light rail trains, busses or at street corners to cross intersections were committed by Hamas drivers. Almost all of the attacks, riots and violence committed by Palestinian Arabs in and around Jerusalem have been planned, financed, equipped and terrorist provided by Hamas. Much of the rock throwing has been perpetrated by Palestinians responding to the incitement of Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas has yet to infringe on this territory but if these attacks should take a more violent turn and begin to be shooting attacks or using roadside bombs, then we can expect that Hamas has coopted the general levels of violence which have plagued much of Judea and Samaria and the Jewish residents living therein. The recent explosions of violence in the Galilee might be either Hamas or Abbas and his incitement pressing themselves into new frontiers, only time and questioning from arrests will reveal.

The main thing to keep in mind is that Hamas is expanding their terror war out of Gaza and across the length and breadth of the West Bank in an attempt to gain general acclaims and maximize the support they can garner going into the elections for the new unity government. These elections were supposed to have taken place during the Gaza war which, of course, made holding elections quite impossible. The elections were then put off for a few months until order was reestablished in Gaza and the government could make ready to facilitate elections. This may be the one calculation which Hamas may have miscalculated, namely that now Abbas has control on when and if elections are to be held. As Abbas has put off the elections for his own office countless times since they were presumably to be held in 2009, it should be second nature to him to put off elections for a new unity government for easily an equal amount of time, say about five years. Abbas is not anybody’s fool and is fully aware of his life expectancy should Hamas take control of the Palestinian government. It was recently made so clear to him when the Israeli Shin Bet and IDF broke up and arrested a large Hamas cell which had been planning to strike the Palestinian Authority with a coup in the West Bank and take over the government. Their intent was to explode the entirety of the West Bank into a roiling terrorist war forcing the Israelis to invade the West Bank to restore calm at which point Hamas was planning on launching their coup and would have likely blamed Israel for the deaths of the Palestinian Authority leadership which they would have removed to make room for their takeover. Their plans probably were counting on the European, United Nations and maybe even the United States President and State Department to take the bait and also blame the Israelis and without bothering to wait for any investigation demand that Israel redeploy every Israeli from beyond the Green Line and remove all IDF, police and other forces also within the Green Line resulting in Hamas taking over both the West Bank and Gaza and removing their competition permanently from the picture. With their grand scheme shot to pieces, it appears that Hamas has taken to plan B and are simply going to sustain an elevated level of violence and bide their time hoping either to win in elections or regroup and make another attempt at a coup in the future. Hamas can always start to make demands for the elections for the unity government to be held though they will do so from behind the scenes using people who are not known Hamas members or even use Palestinian Authority personnel which they have coopted, there has to be a few turncoats among thieves, and wait for the Europeans and United States to pressure Abbas into holding elections and, after being burned last time by Abbas cancelling elections for his post, demanding that the elections be comprehensive and every position be on the same ballot. Hamas is willing to be patient as whether it takes elections or a forceful coup, they are assured that they will eventually assume the governing of the Palestinian Arabs by vote or by putsch, either one as they are not proud. In the meantime the leadership of Hamas can continue to collect their skimmed funds and enrich themselves further as the other lesson the Hamas leadership has learned is that terror pays and pays very handsomely.

The Future for World Jewry Dependent on Safe, Secure Israel

There is a very simple way to look at the future for the Jewish People which can be expressed in a very simple phraseology, “Know Israel to Know Jews; No Israel for No Jews.” Suggesting that the health and future of Jewish communities outside of Israel was threatened to the point of their ceasing to exist in the foreseeable future ten years ago, let alone making that observation to the criticism and relegation of suffering from idiocy in the mid-1960s, such statements were poorly received and brought ridicule and dismissals. Even making such statements now, despite the greater signs of existing and growing threats becoming evident and undeniable, one is opening themselves to accusations of outright paranoia, exaggeration of threats and denial of the obvious vibrancy and rejuvenation of Jewish communities, especially if such commentary is proffered in the United States. Once again, just as was prevalent in the 1920s-40s within European Jewish communities, those quoting evidence of the growing threats to Jewish existence is often met with the very same response, “It cannot happen here, we are accepted, assimilated and fully interwoven and accepted in the society. We are teachers, physicians, lawyers, judges, professors and we serve in the government and are accepted across all walks of life. No, you’re wrong, it cannot happen here.” Those sounding these warnings now realize the opposition and denials which were received by Ze’ev Jabotinsky, one of the early Zionists who attempted to get European Jews to make Aliyah to Israel warning of the coming storm in Europe before World War II as he faced the identical arguments and obstinacy and a refusal to see what he believed was plainly obvious. The protestations have started to lessen in their frequency and volume as across Europe the picture being painted is of threats to Jews which resemble those from a mere two generations back and well within the memories and knowledge base of the majority of Jews. This knowledge does not make acceptance any easier even for those of us who have carried the responsibility for sounding the alarm for decades through humiliating and biting rejections as we never found any joy in carrying a message nobody wished to hear and take no pleasure that some are finally starting to listen and a select few new voices have joined in sounding the alarms. Never the less, the alarm must be sounded so that any willing to listen can be provided a path to safety once they agree to act, and we can only pray that more will awaken to the growing threats and take the necessary steps to save themselves and pass their knowledge to others so more will be awakened.

Where those who desire to believe that there is no real danger in their location and are refusing to recognize any increasing anti-Semitism always claiming that such events happen elsewhere and their neighborhood is warm, comfortable and accepting posing no threat. They will always wave their hand when evidence is presented as if waving off any evidence and claiming that the threat is over there, not here, we are safe, but that is an argument which can only blind many until it becomes dangerously close to, or worse, actually too late. Blurring the evidence is the reality that the most evident and irrefutable evidence around the rest of the world almost always coincides with violence or even conflicts in the Middle East where Israel appears to present a more dangerous and threatening situation than their home location, as warfare always presents obvious dangers which are easily depicted in new articles and televised and internet coverage. Despite the recent conflict in Israel between Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the other terrorist forces in Gaza where thousands of rockets were launched indiscriminately into Israel reaching distances placing three-quarters of Israel within the range of the strikes, the increased anti-Semitism which struck across the globe, particularly in Europe, was easily measurable with increases approaching four-hundred-percent in the worst places. There was one miracle within Israel which made presenting the increased anti-Semitism more evident as thanks to the Iron Dome anti-missile systems spread across Israel, the vast number of rockets which were launched were either correctly identifying strike sites as in open areas and intercepting ninety percent of the rest of the rockets which, in combination with the Israeli people heeding the rocket alarms and headed for safe rooms and shelters, which Israeli investment has made numerous and readily available, the number of casualties in Israel was greatly minimized. The lack of lists upon lists of Israeli casualties, the numbers and severity of the anti-Israel, and often anti-Semitic, protest and the actual assaults on Synagogues and Jews across Europe and in the United States were made extremely evident. The areas which got the greatest coverage for the increase in anti-Semitic violence were France, Belgium, and Britain, though Britain gained its notoriety for one particular event when Minister of Parliament George Galloway unilaterally declared the city of Bradford an “Israel-free zone” that rejects all Israeli goods, services, academics and tourists. Britain might owe Minister Galloway a level of gratitude as he stole any coverage which would have reported that Britain carried one of the greatest increases in levels of anti-Semitic acts reaching levels of four-hundred percent. The situation has reached such epidemic proportions in France that for the first time in decades France leads the rest of the nations of the world in numbers of Jews making Aliyah to Israel. This is an important development as France has the third largest population of Jews in the world only exceeded by Israel and the United States.

Where many Jews in the United States may discuss the atrocious realities faced by the Jews in France, the Ukraine, Sweden, and mostly throughout Europe, somehow their conversation rarely touches on the anti-Semitism in their own backyards. You will rarely hear any discussion of what is best known as the “Knockout Game” which has often been described as assaults consisting of a single punch attempt to knock down or worse to some unsuspecting person which usually targets a Caucasian by a perpetrator who belongs to a minority. The most rejected and ignored fact is that more often than not the victim was somebody who was wearing clothing or other identifying items showing their Jewishness. There was not much mention of an Orthodox Rabbi who was shot dead in the street in North Miami Beach on August 9, 2014, on his way to Shabbat morning services. Rabbi Joseph Raksin from Crown Heights, New York was visiting North Miami Beach. The North Miami Beach Police Department has thus far refused to label this as a hate crime claiming that it was more likely an attempted robbery gone wrong. This despite witness description telling that the two assailants simply walked up to the sixty-year-old Rabbi, shot him, and fled, one on a bicycle and one on foot while, police say they do not have a good description of the perpetrators. The really troubling additional piece of information is that casts doubt on the refusal to classify the murder of the Rabbi as a hate crime is a previous crime committed against the very Synagogue he was walking towards and was a mere two blocks from when he was murdered had been when it was defiled with swastikas and other anti-Semitic graffiti. But why should the North Miami Beach Police be any more disturbed than the majority of the United States Jewish community. Apparently the psychological community studies of victims and their reactions to growing endangerment and hostilities by avoiding recognizing the growing problems and their ability to continue to live their lives completely oblivious to the increasing endangerment to their lives and their situation. This is being further put on display by the Jews of the United States and a frightening percentage of the Jewish communities across Europe. Fortunately, there is still time for the Jews of the world to awaken to the heavy threats hanging over their heads. The one item worth mentioning is that the continued health and existence of Israel may be dependent on the influx of the rest of the world Jewry making Aliyah as with the influx of Jews which could even more than double the Jewish population of Israel would also provide the numbers to fully populate and utilize all the lands within Israel including the areas often referred to as the periphery. The only thing to be said is, the sooner the better, for both the Jews facing an increasingly hateful and threatening world and for Israel who can only gain strength from the increase in population and abilities which the new Olim would bring with them adding to the areas of expertise which already exist within Israel. In many ways it is advantageous to both groups. The Jews would find their safety increased within Israel and Israel would gain a larger base of Jewish citizens and gain from their additional skills as well as numbers.

Their Rush to Judge and Condemn the Innocent

The majority of the Israeli Press being so cosmopolitan, so progressive, and so Tel Aviv centric could not help themselves in their rush to condemn the “Hilltop Youth” for the riot that occurred at the Ephraim Brigade Base in Samaria in response to rumors that the IDF soldiers from the base had orders to destroy community of Ramat Gilad. The riot at the base was committed by teens and there were rumors of another settlement destruction despite ongoing negotiations to avoid such an event thus it had to be those “Settler” teens who build outposts on hilltops which are regularly destroyed by orders from Defense Minister Ehud Barak even against the wishes of many of the ruling coalition. After all, those settlers and their children live off the land, build their own homes without hiring architects or employing reputable contractors, and it shows. Why those people are so unsophisticated and uncultured, not at all like the cultured and civil society of north Tel Aviv and surrounding suburbs where most of the reporters and media reside. They had them convicted and were calling for allowing the IDF to shoot to kill those people if they resisted having their neighborhoods destroyed. Why couldn’t those crazy idealistic Zionists just live within the Green Line like good Jews? Why do they insist on stealing Palestinian lands? Who cares if many of the neighborhoods were originally built with the blessings and often funding of the government, so what? So some of them are building on land they have deeds of ownership that predate the Jordanian occupation. Didn’t the Jordanians revoke all Jewish ownership of those lands and give it to friends of Jordanian King Abdullah? Anyway, Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch ruled that all non-State lands in Judea and Samaria are to be considered and treated as Arab owned land all evidence to the contrary be damned. Why can’t these way too Jewish Jews take the hint and leave the whole area where they are not wanted and let the Palestinians have their land back and then we will have peace, finally peace.

Well, I do agree with the Tel Aviv snobs that any riot against the IDF or disruption of the IDF in fulfilling their given orders should be punished to the full extent of the law. Where I differ is I prefer to wait until the investigation finds the actual culprits before jumping off the deep end and frothing hatreds from the mouth like a rabid dog. In some ways, I am even more distressed with who it now appears were the miscreants that attacked the IDF Ephraim Brigade Base in Samaria. It turns out that it was some Nationalist Extremists which is not a complete surprise and they need to be kept within the law with their protests and actions. The sad part was these particular Nationalists were from the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva in Jerusalem. The Mercaz Harav Yeshiva had no part in the planning or commission of this crime. This was done completely independent of the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva by a group of students who overreacted to a situation and should and will be held responsible for their crimes. The Mercaz Harav Yeshiva and the leaders and faculties of numerous other Yeshivas have condemned these acts as they should. The perpetrators of these heinous crimes have almost all been identified and will be tried for their crimes. Hopefully, whatever punishment the State decides to mete out will very likely be insignificant than what these Yeshiva students will face when their Rabbi gets his turn with them. They have disgraced their Yeshiva which has shamed their fellow students, their Rabbis, their teachers, the alumni of the Yeshiva, and worst of all committed a great sin before G-d. The punishment from the State will probably pale in comparison to what they have coming from their Yeshiva. They very likely will be expelled, the worst fate possible, and especially since they would have great difficulty being accepted at another Yeshiva after their shameful acts. The only bright light that will come of this disgraceful event is it will be used to assure that such does not ever occur again; at least such will never again be perpetrated by Yeshiva youth.

Fortunately, there also might be a few other turns for the better from this whole affair. First and foremost is that the Settler population has had their names cleared and the hilltop youth have been vindicated as every one of their groups denied having taken part in the riots at the base. With some luck, perhaps a few of those progressive and self-righteous urbanites will be less likely to simply jump to conclusions and falsely accuse and virtually convict those who have chosen to reside in the biblical heartland of Eretz Yisroel. Let us hope they have seen the pitfalls of leaping before all the facts have been made available. Maybe, with hope against hope, some of these Tel Aviv elites might take a trip and meet some of the people who live in Judea and Samaria. They might just lose some of their preconceived conceptions of who lives out on the front lines and who make Tel Aviv all that much safer by doing so. They may be in for some shocking truths. Not every person or community in Judea and Samaria are the knit Kippah crowd, a semi-derogatory reference to the religious Jews. Many are secular and are professionals who actually work in Tel Aviv. They may even find that some of the “settlers” are people from their office who they work with and joke with at the water cooler every day. You never know as the population of Judea and Samaria is probably the most derided and misconceived group in all of Israel. They span every dimension of Israeli society and it might be a real eye-opening experience to take a weekend tour of some of the communities and actually meet the people. They really are not from another planet; they are Israeli Jews just like the media who so often malign them. I realize that the Israelis living in Judea and Samaria tend to be more religious than the Jews living in north Tel Aviv and surrounding suburbs. Who would be surprised by such a finding? Not this writer.
