Attempting to Clarify Israel and the Misconceptions

Why not have us start with the biggest misconception, the desire of Israel to form Greater Israel. This is an accusation which most using it know that it is their really big lie. Greater Israel was the Israeli Empire of Kings David and Solomon (see map below). Their empire reached the Euphrates River at its northern point and the Nile, so to speak, to its southern edge. What one has to remember is that whenever your border met the border of Egypt in ancient times, that was considered as bordering the Nile because between the Egyptian border and the Nile were a few small settlements, and a select group of cities which grew around the defensive fortifications along the used paths of travel to central Egypt, the Nile. So the border of Egypt was basically the border of the Nile River as there was nothing of real substance between the border and the Nile River. So, the story of a Greater Israel is a historical reference to the hundred years largely during the reign of King Solomon and the second half of the rule of King David after he unified the Twelve Tribes and then set out on conquest. King Solomon completed the conquest reaching the Euphrates River fulfilling prophesy and retained a steady and peaceful border with Egypt. The Empire of a Greater Israel was an aid to the Egyptian Empire as it presented a safe border where there was agreement and little possibility of any aggressive actions. Neither Egypt nor Israel desired to go to war with the other as they were of relatively even ability and both would lose in such a struggle. There is no desire for modern Israel to extend her border any further than the boundaries defined by the San Remo Conference, the Mandate System and related treaties as well as Article 80 of the United Nations Charter making the Mandates enforceable by the United Nations. The United Nations is bound by its charter to enforce the promises made under the Mandates which set the eastern border of the Jewish State to be the Jordan River and had absolutely no mention of any Arab entity west of the Jordan River, Palestinian or otherwise. The Mandate set an Arab state east of the Jordan River which initially was named Transjordan and later simply Jordan. Despite all the various resolutions voted upon semi-recognizing an Arab Palestinian state out of what was promised to the Jewish State or the intentional harm allowed by President Obama in the Security Council on the Israel damning UNSC Resolution 2334 under Chapter Six authority which does not permit military force or other coercive force such as embargoes for enforcement, the United Nations under the charter, which overrules all else, must enforce as the eastern border of Israel to be the Jordan River. That is an absolute which any International Court would have to respect and use as the law on the matter. This is why the Arab world has never taken Israel into the International Courts at The Hague as they know any such judgement would further enforce the Jordan River border for Israel. After that has been settled, as if Israel were to sign a treaty giving the land away, which she has yet to commit, the sole means for such an Arab state to be formed, such as Hamastan in Gaza, otherwise Israel’s eastern border remains the Jordan River and beyond that there is no desire for reestablishing the borders reached by King Solomon in modern times.

Another slander spread about Israel is the Apartheid accusation that the Jews have rights that non-Jews are denied, specifically the Arab Palestinians. There exist a very limited number of rights which are reserved for solely the Jewish People, but they would not rise to the level of Apartheid. The most obvious is the “Right of Return” for the Jewish People. This was something that the world agreed was understandable and the means by which the Jewish State would operate and be founded upon. Any person whose heritage by birth, or recognized conversion, is Jewish, is permitted to return to the ancient Jewish homelands and become a citizen. This was considered a basic and inherent right under which the Jewish State would operate and as the Jewish State, it would be ridiculous to claim others would have such a right. Jewish citizens upon reaching military age are required to serve in the IDF or perform National Service and this is not required of others with one exception; further the Druze or Circassian Peoples of Israel declared they too would follow conscription and serve exactly as the Jews are required and this was voluntary and decided as a community. Arabs, Christians, Bhai and other religions and peoples residing in Israel are not required to serve in the IDF though they may choose to serve voluntarily. There is a current discussion for expanding military service requirement to the Hassidic Jews. This has not been a right in which Jews are solely privileged to perform, as others are not banging down the doors demanding not to be excluded from inscription. These are the exceptions and beyond these, there is complete equality in Israel. Jews, Arabs, Christians and all other non-Jews have the rights to vote, live in any open community (there are exclusive communities such as religious, Arab, Bhai, Kibbutzim and a selection of similar types), work in any occupation, same healthcare system, join political parties, equality before the law, and everything else just as in any other democracy in the world. The Arab Palestinians do not have these rights because they are not Israelis, they live in their areas under their own governance headed by Fatah and the Palestinian Authority. The Arab Palestinians have not voted in over a decade because Mahmoud Abbas knows he would lose and that would likely lead to his being dragged before an Arab court and he prefers being President so he cancels the elections every time the time approaches. Israel cannot force them to hold elections any more than Israel could force North Korea to hold open and fair elections. The limitations on Arab Palestinians exist due to the fact that they are a foreign entity and are not Israeli citizens and the only citizenship they had before the Palestinian Authority was the older Arab Palestinian likely hold Jordanian citizenship and the rest are the offspring one or two generations removed from being Jordanian citizens.

When Hamas and Islamic Jihad launch rockets or use tunnels to attack into Israel and it results in yet another Hamas and Islamic Jihad against Israel war, there comes the inevitable charge that Israel is using disproportional force as the fighting results in more Gazan civilian deaths than Israeli civilian deaths. There are any number of mitigating reasons of which the most urgent which are ignored are obvious to those who bother to try to find the reality. The largest reason is despite having sufficient tunnel and bunker space to place all the Gazan people underground and in relative safety, Hamas (and we will use Hamas to infer Islamic Jihad and their other allies) refuses to permit any of the civilians outside a select group who have sufficient wealth to purchase their own and family safety. Instead, they force the population to crowd into areas where Hamas is launching rockets or where Hamas is planning to encounter and fight the IDF. Hamas does this with the intent of causing civilian casualties. What is even more frightening, Hamas has been seen to entice children, using their youthful curiosity, to stand near their rocket launchers when they are launching rockets into Israel with the intent of their being struck when Israel returns fire to destroy the launchers. Additionally, Hamas, and friends, do not exactly wear uniforms and the major difference between a Hamas terrorist combatant and a civilian male Gazan of approximately the same age is, at most, a few grenades, an AK47 or similar assault rifle, possibly a sidearm or possibly operating a rocket launcher or mortar. When one of these combatants is killed, then his weaponry is removed and then they are pictured by the media and counted as a civilian. Additionally, when Israel calls people, drops leaflets, and performs other warning actions that they will be attacking a certain building or location, Hamas will call for people, mostly women and children, and have them stand on the roof of the building or surround the rocket-launching vehicle so that Israel will not attack and this works much of the time. It fails on occasion when Israel is using artillery or missiles and intelligence does not show the civilians who are still at the location despite the warnings from Israel. Too often it is later found from survivors that Hamas ordered the people to remain in a targeted building in order to cause casualties which they can show the media and claim Israel has intentionally murdered these people. There have been cases when Hamas rockets have misfired and struck within Gaza such as when the al-Shifa Hospital and Shati Refugee Camp were struck by Hamas fired missiles. This was proven by Israeli radar trajectory tracking systems which followed the track of four rockets launched (see pictures below) from a Katyusha multiple rocket launcher aimed at Ashkelon where one of the rockets was tracked. These misfires are shown to the media claiming that they were launched attacks from Israel. In Gaza, Hamas actually use civilians as human shields which too often results in civilian casualties. The simple truth is the Hamas does everything they can to maximize civilian casualties as well as using their own dead combatants to be stripped of weapons and also added to the civilian count.

Israel works in the opposite direction from Hamas et. al. Israel requires new structures, be they apartments, homes, malls, office buildings or anything else, to have shelters capable of providing protection to the maximum expected count of occupants. These shelters also need to be within a certain distance to permit the people to reach them within a safe period of time which should be less than the flight time of any rocket or missile fired at them. Israel shelters their civilians while the IDF are the ones standing in the open seeking shelter only after they have marshaled all civilians into shelters. Israel has developed the means to intercept as many rockets, missiles, artillery and mortars such as the Iron Dome (see picture below). Israel invests millions of shekels if not billions or even trillions of shekels into producing a multi-level anti-missile interception systems including but not limited to the Arrow II, Arrow III, David’s Sling and the new Magic Wand, and these are the ones which we know exist and who knows what else Israeli scientists have designed and built that they have not made public. Israel protects her civilians placing the IDF between the civilians and the danger while Hamas place their civilians between their combatants and the danger. That is the real reason that there are far less Israeli civilians killed than civilians who are an unintended consequence of Israeli actions to defend Israelis when attacked by Hamas.

Then there is the simple fact that disproportional use of force is a new and previously unheard of measure of warfare. Further, of all the recent and current zones where there is active combat or has had combat, the use of the measure of proportional or disproportional force as a measure has solely been applied to Israel. The ratio of military fatalities when compared to civilian fatalities changed drastically between World War I and World War II (see graph below). The United States had far greater than a ten-to-one kill ratio in Viet Nam when counting combatants. The United States has had almost unimaginable numbers of enemy civilian casualties compared to those suffered by the United States. In every war, there has been very few where the casualties, civilian or military, were proportional and the intent of any military for military combatant deaths is to cause the maximum while taking the minimal numbers. Simply stated, in war a disproportional ratio is what is the intent by both sides. The difference in the Israeli wars with Hamas is due to the intent of each side in their military strategies. Hamas aims to maximize civilian casualties on Israel as they target civilian targets while largely ignoring military targets while Israel intends to target Hamas combatants and uses the IDF to protect the Israeli civilians. Further, while Israel does everything in their power to limit civilian casualties on both sides, Hamas attempts to maximize the civilian death and casualty counts on both the Israelis and their own population. Hamas actually desires that large numbers of their population be killed or injured such that they can have as many pictures as possible to plaster over the front pages and lead news stories around the world. That is their operational strategy, have their own population injured and killed as widely as possible in order to accuse Israel of disproportional force while Israel goes beyond what any other military in the world does to minimize civilian casualties in Gaza as well as protect Israeli civilians. Quoting an investigative report into the IDF performance in the 2014 Gaza War found in this article, we quote, “Each of our own armies is of course committed to protecting civilian life during combat. But none of us is aware of any army that takes such extensive measures as did the IDF last summer to protect the lives of the civilian population in such circumstances.” So much for the claims that Israel has intentionally targeted civilians and the other accusations of disproportionality, an aim of every military in the world when entering combat that they will take few losses while causing maximum losses on their enemy forces.

Then there are claims that Israel has attacked the democratic base of their governance. This claim is brought by Israelis as well as many groups from outside Israel. All of these groups have one item in common, they are far leftist groups. Their claim is that Prime Minister Netanyahu has to be fixing the elections to continue to win elections after election. There are a number of problems with these claims. First, one is that Benyamin Netanyahu has continuously led the Likud Party by decisively winning internal party elections time after time. Most of the other parties also have had the same people in the highest positions over the same period. The parties which have changed leadership are more often those which did not perform well or reach the level of representation in the Knesset that their membership anticipated. This is what has led to these leaders being replaced; Likud has done well so they have continued with what has worked. It is use of the formula of, if it is not broke, don’t fix it. Likud has been successful and thus they have been the party to choose the Prime Minister which has been their successful leader, Prime Minister Netanyahu. What these groups and politicians mean when attacking Israel as not being democratic and having murdered the previously great Israeli democratic history is actually very simply, they mean that their favored parties on the left have not taken power. Israel had leftist socialist governance until 1977 election of Menachem Begin. This ended three decades of Labor Party rule. Since then the left has won some elections but have mostly been placed in the opposition. Unfortunately, the far left have two easily identified political principles, the first is that they have a natural right to run the world and every nations in it and the second is that if they should lose elections then the only possible reason is that democracy has failed and broken down thus the reason for conservative governance can only happen by killing democracy. For further proof of this, one need simply look at the commotion gripping the United States and the anger generated by BREXIT across Europe. The election of Donald Trump, election of Bibi Netanyahu, and BREXIT are the recent proof that the world as we know it is going to explode and die and democracy must be in decline as only by cheating can nationalism or conservatism become the majority. Israeli political mood is religious, nationalist and capitalist with a touch of conservatism which means that everything the far left find putrid; nationalism, capitalism, religion and conservatism; are the items which appear to be driving the Israeli population and this must mean that it is impossible for democracy to operate as the left cannot appear to win elections. Trust, Israeli democracy is alive and well and quite active which becomes evident even to the most casual observer.

Israel is simply despised because its existence makes so many beliefs people have held for close to two thousand years, namely that the Jews were finished and ready to collapse into extinction any day now. With Israel, we now have Jews with an Army and no longer the easy people to push around and blame for everything. Just because Israel exists and Jews are armed and protecting themselves has not quite sunk in, so the world is still blaming the Jews for everything, just now they are blaming the Jewish nation, Israel. Israel understands this as our history was a record of being conquered by empire after empire until the prophesy was finally realized, miraculously just as predicted by our prophets and written in the Old Testament, the Jewish Bible. With the reestablishment of Israel and the start of the ingathering has many people very nervous as they are not quite sure what this means. They fear it might mean the coming of the Messiach will be very soon and nobody believes we are ready for such an event. Others just resent Jews having their own nation and power. Then there is the fact that the land was one under Islamic rule and is in the heart of the base of Islamic power, thus it must revert to Islamic rule and the Jews need to know their place as dhimmis. Then Israel just makes a convenient target as the Jewish nation amongst all the other nations, many of which are of similar backgrounds. The real problem for Israel is it is the only nation with such an identity, a Jewish identity. That makes Israel the lone nation amongst nations which makes her a target. How has Israel responded? We attempt to assist nations in need, we invent technology, medical procedures, new items and all kinds of things which make life better around the world. There is one other item we in Israel have given the world which we like to tell of, we invented the cherry tomato.

Truth Behind Disproportionate War Efforts by Israel

Many critics of Israel and news agencies from around the world love to use the description that Israeli use of the IDF is disproportionate force because Hamas does not possess equivalent equipment such as jet fighters, attack helicopters, tanks, armored personnel carriers and such. Of course there was no problem from these same sources when the United States and their allies used stealth fighters, stealth bombers, B-52 bombers, Apache Longbow Attack Helicopters, Abrams Main Battle Tanks, F-15, F-16, and a full arsenal of the most advanced weapons systems including special munitions, guided missiles, aim by sight chain guns which are aimed by the pilot simply looking at the target and pulling the trigger as well as satellites and drones of numerous varieties against the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and Iraq without a single accusation of using disproportionate force. But Israel ran into the most absurd suggestion from the United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights Navi Pillay who citing Israel’s refusal to share its Iron Dome ballistic missile defense shield with the “governing authority” of Gaza, which is the universally recognized terrorist organization Hamas. She stated concerning the Iron Dome anti-missile system which has spared Israelis the devastation from Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the other terror groups’ rockets fired into civilian areas of Israel decrying that, “No such protection has been provided to Gazans against the shelling.” Perhaps next Ms. Pillay will want Israel to provide Hamas, Islamic Jihad et al with Merkava tanks and the United States to provide them with F-15s, F-16s and perhaps F-35 Stealth Fighters when they roll off the production lines, possibly before they supply Israel.

The stressing importance for providing the people of Gaza with humanitarian aid including food and medical supplies as has been reported in virtually every news coverage and commentary is a ruse and dishonest reporting. Those relaying the blood libel that Israel has prevented such aid from entering Gaza are relaying a complete falsehood. All but two or three days during the entire fifty days of the conflict with Hamas, Islamic Jihad and their allies in Gaza the Israelis continued delivering tens upon tens of tractor-trailers full of tons of such supplies. The few missed deliveries were sent the ensuing day as soon as the terrorist forces in Gaza lifted their mortar fire directed at the crossing point with the intent of causing the deliveries not to enter for propaganda reasons. Those days also correspond to reports of the lack of supplies due to Israel preventing their delivery, something Hamas and friends were sure to emphasize in their press releases for those days. Fortunately, there have been some journalists whose integrity and sufficient outrage and indignance who have spoken about the offenses perpetrated by Hamas to control and edit their releases and limiting their access in order to restrict any negative reporting, especially reports that would have further proven and detailed their use of human shields and firing their rockets from within schools, civilian neighborhoods, mosques and other supposedly protected sites. These reporters will likely face similar restrictions against reporting the full extents to which they were intimidated and otherwise coerced and kept from reporting the truths they uncovered by their editors and higher-ups who will want to protect their news reporters access to Gaza in the future. The one thing that needs to be at the base of everyone’s thinking when it comes to the Palestinians, be they the Palestinian Authority (PA), Hamas, Islamic Jihad or even ISIS is that these groups all practice some form of fascism, be it political nationalist fascism such as the PA or theocratic jihadist fascism such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad and ISIS, and they use similar tactics including control of the media, deception and projection onto others those same tactics of which they are guilty.

Back to Israeli supposed use of disproportionate force. The truth is that Israel used the opposite of disproportionate force. Israel could unleash hell on earth on Gaza and eradicate Hamas and Islamic Jihad no matter how deep into their infernal tunnel systems they tried to hide. Israel used such munitions in order to take out three top commanders who were deep in the tunnels underneath a civilian house. Hamas even made a point of pointing out the weight of the munition dropped on their commanders and classified it as a bunker busting bomb. They were correct and be assured that Israel either already possesses or can readily produce more of such munitions should the need warrant such. Israel has all the capabilities of any first rate technologically advanced nations. Israel is one of the leaders in the design and production of drones. The Iron Dome is just one of a number of high tech weapons systems used by Israel to defend their people and military equipment. Many of the Israeli systems are top secret but they have one which is just as remarkable as the Iron Dome that is not secret. The Israelis have a defensive system which when mounted on tanks, other armored vehicles, tanks or anything else even stationary objects is capable of intercepting and neutralizing even an RPG round fired from relatively close range. So, the real accusation which should be made against Israel is that she is using so little force compared to what the IDF is capable of unleashing that they could end the war with Hamas but the end result to the people of Gaza would be harmed beyond reason which is exactly why Israel does not use all at her disposal. Israel actually takes precautions and as much restraint as possible while still being able to accomplish the necessary tasks required to keep her people safe.

Despite the basic understanding that the political leadership is attempting to walk a fine line between unleashing the full force the IDF is capable of unleashing and the complete surrender to Israel’s enemies at the hands of the indignant morality which finds Jews fighting and defending themselves, especially with such professional competence, to be repugnant and against their concepts and perceptions of what Jews are presumable permitted by those who permitted them to reside within their borders. Many have such indignation that now Jews have their own borders and are willing and fully capable of defending them that they feel they must destroy those borders by any means or at least so all that is politically possible to make it as difficult as possible to prevent Israel being permitted to fully defend them. There are those who desire for Israel to hold the Western powers to their word through the treaties and conventions established at the end of World War I, especially the British who guaranteed in an agreement known as the Churchill White Papers that in exchange for the lands east of the Jordan River in order to establish a land for the Palestinian Arabs which is now known as Jordan, they gave their guarantees that the lands west of the Jordan River as inviolate into perpetuity. Well, once again Israelis and Jews can see the trustworthiness of a British promise. Eventually this round and round the mulberry bush will come to a final end and one side will prevail, Israel or her enemies, the Arab and Muslim world. This war started in the year 629 at the Battle of Khaybar where Mohammad commanded his Muslim marauders slaughtered the tribe of Jews known as the Banu Nadir with whom a treaty was theoretically in force. It is this battle on which the concept of a Hudna was born which allowed Muslim forces to enter into a treaty until they gained sufficient strength to fight from a more favorable position and then break that treaty by attacking their enemies. In theory the other party to the treaty or hudna was to be held to the terms of the treaty in order to protect the forces of Islam who were merely waiting until the situation was in their favor before launching their assault and breaking the same treaty completely unannounced, thus also gaining the advantage of surprise in their favor. This time the result will be different than the slaughter of Khaybar. Israel will simply gain control over the lands promised her by treaty and do so with as little force as required. Israel had become experts at using minimal force with maximum restraint in order to cause as few innocent casualties as humanly possible. Any doubt can research the actual ratio of civilians to combatants of any Israeli confrontation with the Arabs or Palestinians with the ratio of any other military in a modern war, especially any contest where a modern military was facing an enemy utilizing asymmetric warfare. The best commentary was delivered by retired British Colonel Richard Kemp in his Oct. 16, 2009, address to the United Nations Human Rights Commission which states the truth without any bias or predisposition reporting what he observed reviewing Israeli actions during their war with Hamas.

With the likelihood that both United States Secretary of State John Kerry and entourage as well as United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and his squads of aids and experts will both be descending on Israel, it can also be expected that the numbers of reporters and bureau chiefs will be accompanying one or the other party and simply add to the cacophonous din of small bits of truth lost within voluminous tons of misinformation and broadcast throughout the world, especially in the Western nations of Europe, North America and Australia. Rather than bore you by repeating information you could just as easily learn by switching on the Television or radio news where you will probably hear stories about how one side or the other or both are being intractable and refusing to agree to any ceasefire, I will try to find a few precious pieces of information which you likely have not heard or come across after a short prediction on the coming blitz of the self-important arbiters of the enlightened manners of peaceful coexistence. There will be the commentaries about how Hamas is making some reasonable or ridiculous demands, depending on the network or the host or speaker you hear, and definitely there will be reports that Israel has refused even the smallest of the conditions posed by Hamas in order to reach a ceasefire. There might even be another hilariously insulting monologue from John Stewart which might go something like this, “Well, have you heard the latest from the Middle East? Israel is refusing to allow the Gazans to open their international airport in order to have a ceasefire. The airport? What next, not allowing them to swim in the Mediterranean? Oh, wait, Israel insists on continuing their naval blockade only allowing Gazans to swim and fish in the most shallow waters. This is preventing peace? Next they will be blowing up tunnels, oh, wait, they already have. So, let’s see if I have this correct, no airplane trips to take vacations, no swimming in the deeper waters and no tunnels, I’m surprised Israel doesn’t outlaw cars in Gaza.” John would do better as he has a dozen very funny writers and I don’t do comedy that well which is why I cover news as it is often amusingly ridiculous enough without my assistance.

Now for some news that either will be sparsely covered or simply concealed as it would be too revealing of some realities that apparently are too close to the truth which many prefer remain unspoken. The battle which has been being fought since early Saturday has revolved around the Gaza neighborhood of Shejaiya, east of Gaza City, and has been an extremely difficult going for the IDF. Shejaiya is the neighborhood where Hamas locates a large number of their rocket and weapons manufacturing facilities. It also is riddled with underground storage locations which are interconnected by tunnels which lace throughout the area with numerous entrances. This has made clearing the area difficult and probably somewhat reminiscent to military historians of the battle for Stalingrad during World War II and the difficulty of taking the central areas of town and the building referred to as the tractor works. In Stalingrad the sewer tunnels provided the defending troops easy access to supplies and the ability to appear as if out of thin air and ambush the enemy at close quarters. This is the same scenario which caught some members of the Golani Brigade in an ambush by Hamas which resulted in thirteen Israeli fatalities in that one encounter alone. The battle in the streets with door to door encounters within Shejaiya has apparently been so extremely costly for Hamas such that they requested a humanitarian ceasefire in order to remove the dead and wounded. Israel initially denied the request favoring their efforts to continue to push their advantage. Israel relented soon thereafter and not only agreed to a temporary ceasefire for three hours but also granted a two hour extension despite the fact that Hamas had continued launching rockets into Israel throughout the length and breadth of the ceasefire right out of the Shejaiya neighborhood. It is suspected that Hamas utilized the ceasefire to set up the positions with which they launched their ambush of the IDF troops of the Golani Brigade which included seriously wounding Golani Brigade Commander Colonel Raslan Alian. Hamas is using absolutely any advantage they can force or find in order to gain sufficient advantage and make Israel desire ending the carnage and cut their losses making Israel willing to make whatever concessions Hamas demands, or at least sufficient concessions such that Hamas can claim their victory and use such claims to gain an overwhelming victory in any Palestinian elections and thus gain control over Judea and Samaria in addition to Gaza and replace totally Mahmoud Abbas and Fatah making Hamas the sole Palestinian leadership. This would allow Hamas to finally attain their wildest dream of easy range and the advantage of the Judean Hills overlooking central Israel with the majority of Israeli industries, population, infrastructure and her international airport outside Tel Aviv.

There are some events revolving around the Erez Crossing in northern Gaza. The IDF is setting up a fully functioning field hospital which even has a delivery room. This field hospital is not for IDF soldiers or even for Israelis, it is for the Palestinians of Gaza, even if they are injured members of Hamas. Of course any Hamas member receiving treatment would not be returned to the fighting, Israelis are compassionate, not insane, though some might debate that with me. The field hospital will likely resemble the field hospital the Israelis constructed in Haiti after the devastating earthquake virtually destroyed that island nation. IDF medical soldiers were reported to have saved the life of a Hamas terrorist fighter. Soldier Daniel Albo was quoted in the Yediot Aharonot new service stating, “My team and I saved the life of a terrorist who tried to kill us because we are IDF soldiers and citizens of Israel. We saved him because we are human. I’m proud to serve in the IDF.” The building of this field hospital is just another facet of the IDF and Israeli government efforts to minimize the numbers and severity of civilian casualties which will treat those who either by choice or having been forced by Hamas terrorists to remain within the areas being contested in this conflict to serve as human shields, some with the hope of becoming martyrs. All the Israeli efforts to warn the civilians of Gaza, even when doing so also alerts Hamas terrorists to Israeli plans, of either imminent bombings, artillery fire or other military operations which would pose a threat to their safety have often proven to be ineffective due to Hamas instructing the Gazan citizenry that the Israeli warnings should not be heeded and they should remain in harm’s way in service of Hamas and to become martyrs. It was some such activities which resulted in the deaths of several relatives of Hamas commander Khalil al-Haya which was also claimed to be part of the reason Hamas requested Israel agree to a humanitarian ceasefire and allow their bodies and others to be properly tended and removed from the area of continuing combat.

Now for the one oddity which you are unlikely to hear about in your morning newscasts. You see, not all of the relatives of the Hamas leadership are in danger inside Gaza and are in somewhat less danger but in danger just the same and that danger for them is Hamas. While former Hamas and Gazan Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh may have stepped down from his position to permit the formation of the new Palestinian unity government and taken refuge safely far from the fray in Qatar, some members of his family remain endangered in the current fighting. These relatives are his three sisters, Kholidia, Laila and Sabah. All three married Bedouins and moved into Israel where they became citizens some thirty years ago. Bedouins used to take brides from amongst the Gazan Arab communities due to the lack of available women in their tribes, the Tel Sheva Bedouins. Salameh Abu Rukayek, the Bedouin who married Kholidia recently told an interviewer, “Our life is normal here and we want it to continue.” The three sisters live currently somewhere within the Negev Desert in an undisclosed location for their privacy as well as safety. The three sisters are far from the only members of the Haniyeh family which have received assistance from Israel. Both his mother in-law and granddaughter have received medical treatments over the past year all at the same time as their dear relative, Ismail Haniyeh, was swearing to have pledged to Israel’s complete and utter destruction.” Add to this that during the entirety of the three weeks when the rocket fire into Israel by Hamas was escalating and the two weeks of actual open conflict that Israel has continued to supply Gazans with truckloads measured in tons per day of food, medical supplies and other necessities. Israel has also continued to provide Gazans with much of their fresh water supply and close to two-thirds of Gazan electricity until one of the Hamas rockets damaged one of the high voltage lines transferring electrical power into Gaza. So far no technician has volunteered to attempt to repair the broken high voltage line supplying Gaza as the repairs would necessitate working within easy sniper range from Hamas snipers in Gaza. There has been a history of sniper fire being loosed on repair technicians working on electrical equipment which provides power to Gaza including an Arab employee who was murdered while attempting to repair similar damage during a period of relative tranquility. Relative tranquility does not mean complete absence of violence but rather under a couple dozen rockets per month and the taking of every opportunity to shoot at or murder by other means anyone within range from within Gaza. That included the firing of a guided antitank rocket fired into a school bus which resulted in the death of the last remaining young teen as the rest of the children had disembarked seconds and several yards at the previous stop preventing a larger tragedy.

With Secretary Kerry and Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon et al arriving in the near future within Israel we can expect them to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to cease all further IDF actions inside Gaza whether Hamas agrees to end the violence or not. One for the arguments will echo the protesters from around the globe who point to the facts that the Israeli casualty rates are far lower than that of the Gazans. The fact that without the building of hundreds of shelters and the Iron Dome extremely effective protective shell there would have been tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of Israeli fatalities and near countless casualties of all varieties and severity. There have been over one-hundred rockets intercepted by the Iron Dome, which because the system only launches to intercept those projectiles which by computations are guaranteed to strike within built-up areas. With the majority of those intercepted having been aimed at Haifa, Tel Aviv, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Beersheba, Jerusalem and the densely populated central areas of Israel the carnage would have been unimaginable. Imagine rockets pummeling central Tel Aviv or Jerusalem and exploding destroying the type of buildings found in most major cities. The people within these buildings would not have had sufficient time to escape the building and there could easily have been numerous large building collapses daily in the cities around much of Israel. The miracle of the Iron Dome is all which stood between the rain of Hamas rockets and the destruction of Israeli society from the threats of the steel rain falling over Israel exploding away lives as well as buildings and infrastructure. Those who continue to claim that Israel is using excessive force and military power may have another reality they are expressing in a coded manner, the desire to see more dead Israelis, more dead Jews. These are the people who were witnessed through media rampaging across Paris and who assaulted two synagogues and attempted to injure or kill the Jews inside those synagogues. The rioters in Paris are not alone in their desires as there have been numerous such riots and massive demonstrations across the Western world as well as the Arab and Muslim worlds all calling for the destruction of Israel for the benefit of mankind, an old canard which still refuses to quiet. A hunger which is warned about in the Passover service where it warns stating, “In each generation, there are those that rise up against us to destroy us.”
