There are Correct and Incorrect Means to Haredi Enlistment

The IDF is in a bit of a jam and the political arena is not being helpful. The bit of a jam is over the IDF refusal to promote Brigadier General Ofer Vinter, a Kippah wearing, religious Zionist officer. Those in the religious Zionist community are left wondering if perhaps his religious observance and Zionist philosophy were behind this refusal. On the other side of the equation is that Brigadier General Ofer Vinter was not exactly a normal officer in some critical ways. He was not much of a supporter of the containment mentality of the official brass in the General Staff and was more of the kind of personality that when given an objective would clear a path by cutting a wide swath to his goal. Where this philosophy is to be lauded on the battlefield and much endeared him to his troops, it does not fit well with cool-headed planning of distant goals. There was also the pressure from the left in Israel who became enraged when it was revealed that when commanding the Givati Brigade during 2014 Protective Edge engagement against Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza, Vinter wrote in his battle orders that his unit “was fighting an enemy which defiles our God,” words used by David against Goliath, and ended with the Jewish Shema prayer. None of his officers or enlisted troops was upset by this including the secular soldiers and all stated that this gave them greater strength of purpose and was quite uplifting. I was an infantryman and being given spiriting and uplifting words before an engagement is exactly what one desires from their commanding officers, but that was lost on those desiring making political hay. Still, Brigadier General Ofer Vinter was also seen as not having the best managerial style and was said to even have shortcomings and though he was a creative warrior, he left behind a disorganized staff headquarters. This was likely what weighed heavily in this decision but that is likely to be ignored by those who supported his promotion from the religious Zionist community. After all, it is not like there have not been Kippah-wearing officers in command positions before as the picture below from the taking of the Western Wall during the Six Day War depicts.

What does this have to do with Haredi enlistment will soon become evident. The Knesset is once again wrestling with writing a new draft law as the Supreme Court has set aside the last law claiming it was discriminatory. The Supreme Court has apparently been attempting to force the Knesset to draft Haredi youth in the same exact manner as they do everybody else. That is all well and good except that has not been the law in the past and Haredi has, for the longest time, been completely deferred from being drafted. We applaud the efforts to move the Haredi community to become more engaged with normative lives within the Israeli community if for no other reason than because they are an increasing percentage of the population and it has become necessary for them to lead more normative lives as it will soon be impossible to provide for them entirely as they rise in proportion to the rest of the society. The thought is if they are drafted, they will become more exposed to the remainder of Israeli society and more of them will find work and lead what is a normal life rather than spend all of their time studying Torah. Leaders in the Haredi community have largely opposed any attempt to take away what they believe is their special character as the new priesthood representative of the Kohanim in ancient Israel. They ignore that they already present a higher percentage of the total population than the Kohanim ever were in ancient Israel and as such are becoming too large a strain on the economy. The problem is changing the rules from the former extreme to the other extreme is not exactly the most efficient or productive means of making this change and there are other factors as well.

One would think that the IDF would be working to make selected units more accommodating for Haredi to serve while not forcing a lifestyle situation which is unacceptable to their teachings and way of life. Unfortunately, the IDF has been doing exactly the opposite. They have made some combat units which had been exclusively male into coed units, which is something which the Haredi will fight against being forced into serving. There have been a number of public events where women were presented and would sing, something that the very religious men are forbidden from attending, where the religious men were told they could not briefly leave the presentation until the women’s singing presentation was completed. These cases were brought to the attention of the General Staff who decided that these commanders were within their right to force these men to remain for the women’s presentation as to allow them to leave would be upsetting to the women. You can see where this is headed. There has been a growing suspicion that the General Staff are against making any allowances for the very religious at the same time as the political front is trying to force some of the most stringently religious into serving in the IDF. If you want to bring the Haredi into the IDF, might not it make sense to create an atmosphere where they would not be offended right out of the gate?

Where they could make a soufflé, the General Staff is making scrambled eggs and claiming it does not make a difference, they are still eggs. That will not go well and if the IDF cannot make room for the Haredi to remain within their comfort level, then their rabbis will advise refusal to serve, which some already have done. Should the Haredi refuse draft notice en-masse, the political class had better also make a budget for a very large prison in which to hold these draft resisters. Writing a draft bill which demands that all Haredi of draft age be enlisted into service will serve neither the IDF nor the Haredi community. There must be a deferment allowance for a number of Torah scholars whose study of Torah would provide benefit beyond esoteric benefits as described in prayers that they bring peace to the world. Even the idea that their study of Torah will bring peace to the world, thus far it does not appear to be working which means either they are not doing it correctly or something else is definitely wrong. One complaint we have heard is that should one drive through the Haredi community during the day, they would see numerous young Haredi males simply out and about and in coffee bistros and engaged in many activities which do not appear to be Torah study. We have not tested this theory, but have seen pictures which give it credibility. Perhaps there can be found a middle ground where those Haredi who graduate from their Yeshiva with exemplary grades and have shown a propensity for original thought and interpretation of Torah to be granted deferments. The percentage and grade expectation for this along with a requirement for letters recommending their deferment from at least three of their teachers could be arranged with the Haredi Rabbinate. But forcing the entirety of the Haredi to suddenly be drafted is completely untenable.

There is another side to this as well, and it too has to do with the budget. The IDF takes a large slice of the budget which makes complete sense when we look at the rioting currently occurring on the Gaza border and the potential for threats from Syria and Lebanon. It is a well-established fact that Israel need be on a war footing at all times with a ready reserve to provide support and bolster the numbers of in uniform soldiers often at a moment’s notice. But the IDF is currently fully manned according to reports we have read and in some fields has more recruits than are necessary even during times of active conflict. Even the infantry ranks are well manned, especially in the most elite corps. Simply put, currently there is no crying need for additional forces, especially in the numbers drafting all Haredi would provide. Thus this does not need to be done as if there were some emergency requiring such an increase in manpower for the IDF. Would the effect of providing more reserves prove advantageous? Well, of course, but not to the effect that such a move would provide and one must also weigh the cost societally. Angering an entire sector of society which would also produce ripples through other areas is not exactly prudent. Yes, the Haredi need to be brought into the mainstream. This can be performed intelligently starting with having certain changes in their education system introducing additional STEM course requirements to at least introduce them to some of the more useful tools for joining the mainstream preparing them for having a decent chance for finding employment. To bring about radical change, there are two ways of doing so. There is the gentler and less likely to cause adverse opposition way or the way my uncle taught me to swim by throwing me into the deep end of the pool. Do the members of the Knesset really desire to take the sink or swim route or the coax and offer incentives route. The problem is some are using this political football to try and bring down the coalition and force elections. That is another side which has nothing to do with Haredi, Torah study or anything but the religion of the left to destroy anything which they do not control. But that is for another time with an issue which is not so socially charged.

Generally the Generals Create Great Problems

In a recent article titled Israel’s demographic suicide? by the ever readable and insightful Caroline B. Glick we were given views of a recent meeting between the new Minister of Defense Avigdor Lieberman and the General Staff of the IDF. From what we understood, Minister Lieberman came into the meeting with a rightful, honest and workable solution to numerous problems mostly caused by the presence of the Palestinian Authority (PA) and its insidious effects over too large an area and over too many institutions all of which they brought to holy jihad against Jews and Israel. During the meeting and facing an allied and unified front or Perfumed Princes, generals as known to the public, he was convinced that the best approach to the coming elections this fall in the local elections throughout the PA where Hamas is expected to take control over many, if not a predominant number, of the local government thus preventing and PA security forces from presumably fighting terrorist enterprise would be best averted by peremptorily ceding complete planning and zoning authority in Area C to the PA. Our position is the surrendering Area C will fail in every conceivable way possible. But the Perfumed Princes appear to have converted Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman to their side of the argument where the military basically gifts the PA with complete control over the lands in Area C which will lead to the removal of all IDF forces replacing them with PA Security Forces and the settlements will immediately become untenable and the hundreds of thousands of Jews and other Israelis residing in these cities, towns and frontier settlements will be forced to retreat behind the Green Line and holding any claim on East Jerusalem will become all but untenable. Basically, the Perfumed Princes idea is to repeat Gaza except this time with the entirety of Judea and Samaria as well as East Jerusalem including the Temple Mount and the entirety of the Old City to the PA who once the IDF and other Israeli assets have retreated will lose all the lands to Hamas who are far more motivated than the PA forces, many of which are more loyal to Hamas and Islamic Jihad as well as the Islamic State than they are to Mahmoud Abbas, Fatah and the PA. Such a plan worked so wondrously in Gaza that the Perfumed Princes believe that doubling down with the safety of Tel Aviv is the best course of action. The best course of action is and has always been the settlement of all the lands given by Hashem and to above our greatest joy to place Yerushalayim, the city conquered by David and beautified by Solomon which includes Tower of David in Yerushalayim.

Tower of David in Yerushalayim

Tower of David in Yerushalayim

The news of this reached us soon after we had responded to a challenge to put forth a plan which would benefit Israel in dealing with the PA which we presented in our article As Long as They All Hate where we presented basically the opposite of the plan presented by the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) and assorted other IDF commanders. Their basic premise is that should Israel respond to the threat, that Hamas will win numerous townships and potentially even Ramallah, which would be the ultimate loss for the PA and be the end of Mahmoud Abbas as their leader; that by turning over the remainder of Judea and Samaria and deserting any responsibility for those residing already in Area to PA rule, whatever that may mean after the fall elections, and this will prevent Hamas from winning local elections across the currently PA controlled areas. Sure, surrendering all control over what Jordan renamed the West Bank and is actually a good part of Judea and Samaria simply because of a threat that Hamas might take control of areas now held by the PA will invigorate the PA and not have any similar effect on the Hamas leadership which is obviously what scared the IDF COGAT commanders. Are we the only ones who see a grievous error in their logic? If anything, such a move should guarantee Hamas taking control with even less opposition of Judea and Samaria and raining rockets supplied by Iran through Jordan, even if Iran must eliminate Jordanian King Hussein and the entirety of the Jordanian military, assuming they do not simply change sides in the interest of continued breathing and potentially positions in the coming Iranian puppet state.

The Perfumed Princes could not have presented a more backwards and illogical plan had that been their intent. The actual problem is that these Generals are tired of actually performing their duty and they realize that their power does not stem from protecting Jews and Israelis in Judea and Samaria but in deadly threats making the continuation of the state of Israel dependent on them. The real problem is actually the same problem as Israel faces in their legal society where judgeships above the lowest level is controlled either directly or indirectly, the higher the court the more directly, by the Supreme Court, the Attorney General, the head of the Lawyers’ Guild and a small and overwhelmed few members of the elected governance, that being the Knesset. Such a panel is so far left as it could only be equaled by the average garden party held by the effete elite of Tel Aviv and the COGAT Command and most other commands outside of combat arms are also Perfumed Princes for similar reasons. These leftist control the levers of choosing their replacements and refuse to permit any Zionist, and especially religious Zionist, to ever enter their ranks even if it requires setting up high ranking Zionist religious officers for a situation where proper actions can bring charges of undue force and doing nothing brings charges of dereliction of Duty. Thus the High Command of the IDF, the Supreme Court, the justice system, the ranking legal and other administrative commanders are all Tel Aviv leftist anti-Zionists who are determined to make Israel a binational state where Jews become a minority as the leftist socialist anti-nationalist post-Zionists are haters of Judaism and Judeo-Christian morality and are willing to make Israel into an Islamist run nation in the belief that they can take control of such a governance and forge their communist wonderland free of nationalism and religious influences. Simply stated, these lunatics are willing to destroy Israel, hand it to the Muslims, all in an attempt to forge their socialist dreams and they do not figure in their formulae that they will be amongst the first ones beheaded under any Islamist governance. This disease exists through much of Europe and is taking hold in the United States where President Barack Obama was the initial introductory Presidency and Hillary Clinton will be the final step should she be elected, but the Americans are as blind in many leftist circles as are these Israeli leftist socialist communists.

Israel has one viable future which cannot and will never be realized as long as we suffer these fools who hate Zionism and hate Judaism and are willing to bow before Ba’al and sacrifice everybody else’s first born son if that is what it takes to destroy the Jewishness and Zionist enterprises within Israel. They, like their Western counterparts, hate Judeo-Christian ethics and nationalism to such an extent that they are willing to blindly accept anything which is also against such viable and moral leadership. They are incapable of seeing past their red hot hatred of Judaism and Zionism that sacrificing all of Israel to the observers of Allah and betraying Hashem and all that comes from his love and rules for a moral and good life where all are cared for by the deeds of others. They do not see that charity is amongst the central pillars of Judaism and believe that nobody would sacrifice a single shekel of their monies to help the needy and only through the force of government can the poor be cared for. They believe this as they are wanting to ever ‘waste’ a Shekel of their monies willingly and believe all are as dead hearted as they. They judge others by their own selfishness and are blind to the generosity of others whom they hold in contempt quite likely because they do see these others are better persons than they and thus must be destroyed to make a perfect government controlled system which does not depend on the generosity of others but on the power of the all-powerful state.

Further, these Generals, Perfumed Princes, realize that by surrendering Area C they will no longer be the ones to blame should there come terrorism from these areas as they will no longer govern them. They tire of governing Area C and protecting those Jews, who are mostly religious, Zionist or both as these are the very Jews and Israelis they hold in contempt. They would rather allow the Arab Muslims behead and murder every last Israeli and Jew currently under their mandate for protection. They have already performed so well at this protection that the two items which have kept these Israelis safe have been the outstanding performance of the troops charged with such protection who take their positions of protecting the innocent seriously, and the security forces each community has appointed or empowered volunteers who manage the security including electronic surveillance and boots on the ground day and night throughout the week and even on the Sabbath as life is precious in Judaism and every life is worth saving and assisting such that it can live. Many of these elitists have completely lost track of these basic terms and instead think only of the power of the state and not the empowerment of the individual. These leaders require a complete house cleaning and replacing with those in whom the safety and future of Israel and the Jews can be trusted with complete faith that they will take such charge seriously.

The one obvious failure are the General Staff and their complete infiltration or possibly permanent ability to replace their retiring officers solely with the officers from the legal division or from amongst their own known circle, the tea, brie and fondue party gang as we like to call them. The time has come to change a few things even beyond the heads at the top. The first thing is the legal busy beavers should be required to spend their initial training and a one year service in an infantry company. This should be their being farmed out randomly amongst infantry companies as privates such that they understand the life of the rank and file soldier. They should also be charged with achieving a certain rank before being commissioned as a lawyer and officer in the IDF and those unable to cope with such service should be barred from the legal divisions. The IDF deserves officers who will be making life and death decisions to fully understand the position and dangers the average soldier faces to achieve the position where they may be deciding whether they get to take the shot or stand down. Currently the order to stand down is the failsafe and preferred command decision unless every last requirement has been verified, checked, rechecked and further checked to see if the position has held its ground and still has the shot available after fifteen-twenty minutes of lunacy by command before allowing the infantry or other assets to take the shot.

Perhaps we need a basic and simple pair of examples of situations which will clarify. Let us assume one is a fighter pilot carrying ordinance, bombs for the less aware of the language, and he is approaching the target and he does not see any civilians blocking his approach and now requires clearance from the legal beagles before he can release his ordinance. Now the lawyers order a second aircraft, a reconnaissance drone or piloted aircraft to fly to the locations which can take up to five or ten minutes while the pilot with the ordinance has been circling his target in danger of being shot upon. During this time the target inside the building has left, taken shelter in a special area of the basement or possibly called for women and children to be brought to the rooftop knowing that a single civilian is a sufficient screen which will prevent most bombings from being executed and any doubt results in the initial pilot landing with ordinance still attached, an unadvised and very dangerous task as the shock of landing can activate the ordinance and with another simple bump detonate the ordinance if it was set for immediate blast after drop. Even if the target of the bomb was the third floor of a seven story building where the ordinance is set to punch through the five levels which would mean that the ordinance would count from the rooftop as the first punch placing it in the seventh floor, then another to the sixth and another to the fifth and another to the fourth and another to the third with a tenth of a second delay and detonation sufficient to kill all on the third floor or just those in a central room and still leave the building though structurally compromised, remaining standing. Even such ordinance is thought to take out the roof by the lawyers making the drop/no drop decision. The bombs today are so completely different than in previous wars fought that many people are unfamiliar or completely ignorant of the special situational conditions for which rounds can be optimized.

An even more dire and dangerous situation would present itself when a sniper has spent two or three days sneaking into his optimum firing position and has the subject in his sights and now he waits for his number two to give him the signal to fire. All parameters are met but what if he gets an officer who insists on covering his position and orders a drone to reconnoiter the area before approving the shoot. This might lead the target to take cover or they could depart or return inside taking away the opportunity while waiting for approval. Many times a sniper is not within secured areas and is operating within enemy controlled territories and even making radio contact can create a dangerous situation for the sniper and his spotter. Many of the officers whose approval is required before taking a shot have never actually qualified with a weapon or if they have it was with a sidearm and not the variety of weapons used by most combat infantry or sniper or other combat individuals. This situation is rather dangerous for the troops and other individuals who must attain clearance before executing their final command to engage. In any situation an order to refrain from engagement makes the position more dangerous and even could lead to capture or death. These are things these soldiers, and they are presumed to be soldiers and not lawyers, have most often never been familiarized with and thus are making their decision considering a perfect scenario with a perfect and clean target and almost no situation in combat or flying support missions ever present a clean target and the wait time might even make a clean target unfit for execution as the situation changed while awaiting approvals. This is why the main part of any decision to engage needs to be left to the troops in the field or aircraft and the IDF depend on their morality and training, two things Israeli men and women in uniform are not just amongst the best but are the standard which other armed services in the Western developed world know they could not match the IDF and its morality in combat and others agree in even stronger language.

The conclusion we draw is obvious, Israel requires some basic appointment channels to be altered. We will not go into how the actual civilian legal divisions, the courts, particularly the Supreme Court and Attorney General, are chosen and concentrate on the command positions at the top of the IDF. The very first item is the appointment of IDF commanders must not be subjected to trial by newspapers, television and radio news, political talk shows or even approval by the Supreme Court. Appointment of the commander of the IDF must be made in order to choose the man most capable of commanding the defense and other military services as demanded by or commanded by the civilian government. They must be capable of performing the necessary oversight and give the orders which will complete any mission the IDF will be assigned and do so with a minimal loss of life for both the IDF and innocent civilians as understood to be defined by international law. The commander must be somebody the troops will respect and look up to. The IDF Commanding General does not need be acceptable to the Supreme Court, the tea and brie bridge club from Tel Aviv or other members of the moneyed elite, and the upper class who hold monetary aloof positions on all the correct social lists and definitely not be made to suffer the approval of Haaretz or other news outlet. They are a combat leader and being polite is not a required job performance though it would be a nice addition after they are chosen for their military command knowledge. The supporting General Staff need be chosen in like manner and should be fully capable of commanding a war for the national survival of the Israeli state with thirty seconds warning before launching troops ready and standing on alert. They need know the call-up procedures and who is the person to set that in motion as well as their subsequent commander and have the remaining list of the rest of that command at ready and known position for quick reference. The entirety of command should be stripped down and chosen solely for their love of country and ability to move into combat at a moment’s notice. There are no requirements for garden parties and the other frills such as performance at charity balls or other social ills. Such commanders should be religious, Zionist or both with the Zionism being a main requirement as they are best suited for trust to be centered within and being religious grants one deeper insight to the solutions required though one still performs their duty at the behest and under the set goals and limitations directed by the civilian governance. Such generals need understand that any command received is meant to be executed immediately if not sooner unless directed otherwise. This will necessitate a reassessment of the current General Staff and their replacement, as it has been found that those currently serving are lacking in any manner of intestinal fortitude or desire to serve the nation of Israel and its founding Zionist spirit. As goes the General Staff goes the military. If the commanders are soft and indecisive or lack in love of country, then the troops will reflect the same. This is why the General Staff need be religious and Zionist with love of Torah, love of Hashem, love of Israel, and lastly most obedient of the commands to settle the lands that Hashem has gifted to us to care for as these are the lands of Hashem. This need be the central reason for the IDF which is included in the motto, “Honor, Torah, Israel, People, Zion and Yerushalayim.”

Ya’alon Backhand Slaps Bibi and Israel

The dust-up in Israel started small, as these things almost always do, then grew exponentially before exploding onto every newswire almost as fast as the anti-Zionist, anti-Israel and anti-Semitic haters were twittering and alternately flooding the electronic air salivating at their fresh meat which was falling into their laps by the minute. The initial comment was made by IDF Deputy Chief of Staff Yair Golan commented at a Holocaust Remembrance Day memorial. The unkempt and unacceptable comment made all the worse by coming from IDF Deputy Chief of Staff was, “If there’s something that frightens me about Holocaust remembrance it’s the recognition of the revolting processes that occurred in Europe in general, and particularly in Germany, back then – 70, 80 and 90 years ago – and finding signs of them here among us today in 2016.” There were reactions to the statement but nothing for reporters to write home, or the office, about as the General backtracked off and claimed he worded his comments poorly. That would have been the end of it had it been allowed to die a natural death but such was not to be the case.

Prime Minister Netanyahu made a discreet demand that military officers, security officers and other ranking security personnel, and double for the general staff, need watch their comments and be wary that what they say could be harmful for Israel. He did not call General Golan out or place him on the carpet for a dressing down, just a quiet semi-public statement. Then the Defense Minister felt he should defend the honor of his general staff. The thing is that too many high ranking military and security personnel both still in service or recently retired have made references equating Israel to many unsavory references such a Nazis amongst others. Ya’alon calling for the Generals and other officers to speak their minds even if everything they say runs contrary to the ruling government positions. This was an assault made directly challenging the Prime Minister which would normally have that Minister not only removed from his position but removed from the Likud Party and any government position with the ruling coalition. Instead Prime Minister Netanyahu offered Ya’alon the position of Foreign Minister after removing him from his position as Defense Minister which was to be given to Avigdor Lieberman in exchange for bringing his Yisrael Beiteinu Party into the coalition strengthening their hold on power and making it a little more secure. Ya’alon refused the change of ministerial position and instead left the government but it was his parting statements made to the media which were the makings of a disaster and a scandal.

Avigdor Lieberman Bibi Netanyahu and Moshe Ya’alon
The Love/Hate Boat Cruise Line

Of Ya’alon’s parting shots, the first was used as an initial shot across Prime Minister Netanyahu’s bow stating, “To my great regret, extremist and dangerous forces have taken over Israel and the Likud movement.” This was his follow-up Benjamin Netanyahu claiming his having a, “lack of confidence” in the government’s ruling coalition, the Prime Minister’s decision-making and morals and fearing the coming cruel submission of the officers in what he had come to view as his own Israeli Defense Force (IDF). Perhaps that was where the problem really began, Ya’alon saw the IDF as his own personal friends and was more to serve him and be his political weapons to use to ascertain the leadership of Likud and being the new Prime Minister. He apparently had it all figured out except for the part where the military does not set policy, it carries out policies given them by the government and serves the people of Israel, all of them. But Ya’alon was nowhere near finished with the attacks. His next whine complained stating to the delight of all IDF and Israel detractors, “I fought with all my might against manifestations of extremism, violence and racism in Israeli society, which are threatening its sturdiness and trickling into the armed forces, hurting it already,” We are not quite sure what Israel he resides within but the people we know hold no animus against anyone or any group unless some individual has committed an act of unfounded violence against others as such a person would be a pariah here just as it would in almost any civil society.

This was far from the first time a conflict was spawned by IDF Deputy Chief of Staff Yair Golan; as back in 2006, IDF Deputy Chief of Staff Yair Golan said it was “intolerable” that Israeli soldiers place Palestinian civilians in harm’s way instead of themselves: “In the presence of civilians we take risks upon ourselves, and rightly so. It’s unacceptable that in the name of preventing risk we would decide that now we are going to mow down an apartment building. You would kill women, children, those involved. It’s intolerable.” The item about Minister Ya’alon’s statement is that, as he was a member of the government and in the Cabinet of the Prime Minister, everything he said was news worthy and considered important. When a Defense Minister supports statements made against the ruling coalition the media properly takes note and this makes the coalition weaker and weakens the Prime Minister. Such a statement would have been denounced even if stated by the leader of the opposition as such a statement against the Prime Minister meant to weaken his hold on power and directly challenging him is asking for the full weight to be brought against one. Now, in the end, Prime Minister Netanyahu survived this assault and potential hostile take-over of the government with graceful style and also strengthened the ruling coalition by adding the Yisrael Beiteinu Party to the coalition adding to the original slim margin making the defection of one minister less of a challenge. By also offering Ya’alon the position of Foreign Minister, Prime Minister Netanyahu was offering to lessen the blow of the removal from Defense Minister and was providing Ya’alon a promotion of sorts and a higher position according to many sources. This was not as much a declaration of disrespect of Ya’alon as he has now made it out to be but rather carefully guiding him within the Inner Cabinet from Defense to Foreign Minister which while bringing in another coalition member strengthens the coalition and this government definitely now is stronger for the shake-up.

Still there are some worrisome things worthy of note. The fact that the military had taken upon itself the mantle of ruling through media releases, embarrassing members of the Government and were very quickly running amuck was evidenced further by this entire incident. There had been previous attempts by leftists high in the military to rule or embarrass any government which was not to their liking and these moments had the gleeful coverage desired from the leftist media in Israel, Europe and beyond. One example as the chief of staff of then Israel Defense Forces, Gadi Eisenkot, in a lecture to high school students recently warned that “the IDF cannot speak in slogans such as ‘if someone comes to kill you, arise to kill them first’ (an edict taken from Talmud and reportedly used by rightwing supporters and not of the current government which has been quiet until recent about such statements, a potential mistake)” and said “I don’t want a soldier to empty a (rifle) magazine on a 13 year-old girl with scissors”. What is the effect of Eisenkot’s statement on an already anti-Semitic global public opinion, which daily charges Israel of a “disproportionate” response during the Third Intifada?

Ya'alon and General Staff

Ya’alon and General Staff

Such statements and other actions made by these upper echelon leftist officers follow the same path as did the Oslo Accords, the Roadmap and so many other attempts which take the form of placing Arab Palestinian demands and stipulations above the interests of the people of Israel and especially those residing in Judea and Samaria, then ceding lands to their control removing any Israeli claim no matter the correct and historically significant the Jewish claims to such lands and finally handing them excuses for murdering Jews before the international and often antagonistic media. Such insubordination while supported and loved by the members of the European Union and the individual governments as well as those who are backing efforts from the far left and right in the United States to tear down the relations and deep ties between the United States and Israel was a welcome series of events. The anti-Semites had a field day with comments such as those quoted above and will continue to take such statements to heart as they hurt any Zionist or Pro-Israel group. The IDF should have seen their ranking general staffs decimated as a cleaning out is in order should the Prime Minister desire to remold the military complex with generals more sympathetic to the Zionist cause and more in line with the government as many of these generals were likely left from when promotions to the general staff were made by left-leaning governments and are paying their empowering interests back in spades.

Whether the Prime Minister takes any moves to alter the General ranks is up to him and those he trusts. At least one excuse making, surrender firsters is no longer within the government poisoning it from within. We can all expect Ya’alon to continue and fulfill his threat to return and take power in the future, whether from within Likud or as head of a new faction was left unclear. It would not even be surprising to see his name as a new leader within Tzipi Livni’s ranks and her seemingly moribund Party. Wherever Ya’alon crawls off to, if it is outside of Likud or even if he remains in Likud it should be expected that he will join those unsavory post-Zionists who likely believe that Israel should be an open democracy as even should the Arab Islamists take control of the government they would be unable to remove the Jewish population and would rule in a similar manner as do current governments as the Constitution, a non-existent constitution which they likely were referring to the Basic Laws would still allow for freedom of speech, religion and all the other trappings of the Israeli multicultural society. There would be no problem if the Islamic State and Hamas came to power as the laws would constrain their actions. Yes, sounds simply Kumbaya and a few other campfire songs from summer camp back when we were all younger and dreams were large and Israel even less in size and was supported by the left as a socialist paradise. Israel is still a paradise with quite a few problems of which this is just one of the most damning to come to bear against our existence. We have survived as more diligent heads come from all sides with a clear vision of the threats; it is simply Ya’alon and a number of perfumed princes playing at general staff position who are necessarily a threat to each and every last one of us. That is our dog in this fight and we should never forget the extents that the leftists went to overthrow the elected government here and that was truly frightening. Slowly but inexorably many holding these positions are being removed from their seats of power and in time we may be in a different and better place and many here can hardly wait. Such is life here in Israel.
