Did the Republicans Out Maneuver the Republicans?

President Trump made a miscalculation at the beginning of his term which he is unlikely to make again. He believed that as he had won the Presidency that he was now the leader of the Republican Party. He assumed that the Republican Party was very similar to the Democrat Party which he knew rather well having seen them operate for many of his years. He believed that the Republicans would be assisting him with his agenda. He now knows that his assumption was not quite valid. There were Republicans who believed that they had the right to control the Republican Party and that they were going to force President Trump to allow them to control the agenda no matter what it took. Their first stand was over repeal and replace of Obamacare where they prevented all three proposals from passing and brought President Trump to his realization that there was a sufficiently sizeable group of Republicans who did not care about the good for the American people, they cared solely about their power and control. They would sacrifice the Republican Party from holding the White House if it meant they could impose that they were the real powerful members of the Republican Party. They had everything figured out, they would hold the promises made by candidate Trump hostage until President Trump submitted to their control. Then they would dictate policy as they were meant to do. One felt particularly cheated because he should have been the Republican in the White House the past eight years but he was robbed by President Obama. Then they threatened to foil President Trump’s tax reform plans unless he allowed them to take charge and do what was the right thing to do. These rebelling Republicans were a motely group of very liberal Republicans plus a few very angry Republicans who despised that this upstart who has never held any elected office or paid his dues to the Republican Party was now the President and leader of their party, that is their party. They were not going to bow before this upstart and he was going to bow to them and they would finally dictate and make things right, make them how they had always believed they should be, finally achieve those things they knew were necessary.

President Trump is a different kind of politician, a business politician who believes in making deals as necessary. When he realized that because of this small band of aggravated Republicans who were bent on refusing him any victory, President Trump did the only thing which makes any business sense, he went to work with the Democrats. He offered the Democrats hope for a deal but first they had to prove they could produce the votes by giving him something he badly needed, raising the debt limit. The Democrats gave President Trump his debt ceiling increase and the will to achieve more things which they hold in common. There are Republicans who have accused and thought that President Trump would be right at home amongst the Democrats. Now there will be howls from the Republicans about President Trump joining with the Democrats and deserting the Republican Party. The discussion will be interesting between the Republicans and President Trump as each one accuses the other of betrayal. Which one honestly betrayed the other will depend upon one’s own views and probably which side your political bread is buttered. It might even just come down to which of the two main characters in this grand opera you believe is the better person, President Trump or Senator McCain. What comes next will prove to be telling and it will depend heavily on whether President Trump actually cares about working with the Republicans or now feels he has new friends he can depend upon.

Senator McCain versus President Trump

Senator McCain versus President Trump

The one thing, which we can tell President Trump, is that the Democrats suffer from an ideological block that only permits them to serve their own purposes. Then President Trump also needs to know that those renegade Republicans who appeared to hate his becoming President with so much passion that they refused to do things even that they had promised for the last seven years to their own constituents are just as untrustworthy. But it is very likely that the President already has this game figured and will work with whomever wishes to play ball with him and assist him in getting certain ideas pushed through to fruition. This may mean working with the Democrats on Tuesdays and Thursdays and working with the Republican on Mondays and Fridays and working with a combination made up from both parties who are simply interested in advancing what is best for the people of the United States on Wednesdays. In such a scenario, we predict that Wednesdays would be outstandingly productive. But the real question is what is the immediate path the President might try as neither party has a proven record or appears completely committed to his ideas and programs.

President Trump is going to need to prove that he really can perform the art of the deal. The question will be with whom he will be dealing. President Trump will most likely move to have the Republicans take a shot at passing his tax reform plan, something they will probably demand not be as deep a cut or that so many of the loopholes and deductions be removed. The Democrats would be even more averse to working with President Trump on any form of tax reduction unless he would agree to raising other taxes or enacting Single Payer Healthcare, otherwise known as Medicare for All. The Democrats have always been the deal makers where their half of the deal always has to be enacted first and too often their agreement to enact more later often does not come to fruition. At least that has been the record in their past, especially when it comes to amnesty for illegal aliens (undocumented immigrants) and closure of the border to prevent additional illegal aliens (undocumented immigrants). Fortunately, the President’s next major fight will be tax reduction and reform. This would be an area better suited to working with the Republican Party. That would be a good starting point for President Trump if that is his next venture, but he should also enlist any willing Democrat assistance available just in case the Republican rebellion is still in vogue, then the tax program could still have a good opportunity for passage. Wherever President Trump’s agenda plans may be, he might be required to enlist the willing on each program from both parties in order to bring his campaign promises to fruition. The immediate problems facing President Trump is finding a coalition of the willing from both parties and proceed with the work at hand. To do anything less would be disrespectful of those who elected him to accomplish those items he promised during the campaign. The voters did not care who President Trump works with, they just wanted him to work on those items he promised. They do not even care if he believes in that which he promised, they just demand that he deliver or he will have only one term. Then again, after the way President Trump has been treated, he may not desire another term which makes him even more of a problem as then he has nothing to lose by doing whatever he feels is necessary. At least things will be interesting, and that is very good for those who write about politics.

It’s More Than Just Syria, Remember?

With the morning, noon, and night Syria this, Syria that, it is difficult to remember the plethora of disasters which had been plaguing President Barack Obama and the legislative initiatives which had been dominating the headlines, AM political talk shows, and the late night comedians. Before we had our lesson in translating Arabic, care of Senator John McCain, with his informing a curious public that when terrorists and al-Qaeda or Muslim Brotherhood fighters are screaming “Allahu Akbar” that it means “Thank G0d” and not “Allah is the greatest,” we had former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s infamous quote of, “What difference now does it make,” regarding the murder of four brave Americans in Benghazi including Ambassador Chris Stevens, State Department staff member Sean Smith and Former SEALs Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, the last two continued to fight for their lives for close to seven hours painting the mortar position which eventually killed them but nobody was coming, they had all been ordered to stand down. We still have not been privileged to be told where the stand down orders originated and we are now fully aware that during the campaign when Hillary Clinton decried, “Who do you want answering that telephone at 3:00 in the middle of the night?” We now know that it is neither Hillary Clinton nor Barack Obama. It probably has not improved all that greatly replacing Ms. Clinton as Secretary of State with John Kerry or with adding as Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel.

Then there are plans to provide anywhere from eleven to twenty-plus million undocumented workers a path to citizenship despite that they are more accurately described as illegal aliens; though I get the feeling that they have other names depending on which side of the argument one sits. There are those mostly amongst the Republicans who look at the illegal aliens as a low cost workforce which can benefit big business while many Democrats view these illegal aliens as future Democrat voters who very well might sway future elections such that the Democrats retain a majority in both the House and the Senate and retain the White House, well, at least for the foreseeable future. Remember the discussions as to whether we should refer to these illegal aliens as undocumented workers, unfortunates simply seeking a better life for their families, migrant workers, seasonal workers or any of any of a collection of misleading terminology had been raging for months. The main thing is that you must never refer to the “path to citizenship” as “amnesty”. No matter how you describe these illegal aliens, you must ignore the fact that these people crossed our borders, broke our immigration laws, jumped the line, and began their American experience by stealing somebody’s identity and instead show compassion and understanding. We need to remember that the immigration problem also has a group of politicians who have met and plotted out a path which will lead to a resolution by which everybody will receive fair treatment. These legislators go by the name of “Gang of Eight” and includes the following Senators;  John McCain (R-Ariz.), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.). Of course there is also one small peculiarity to the immigrations debate, apparently there is a sizeable portion of the population who would support President Obama simply making the illegal aliens legal citizens by Presidential edict and going around the Congress and the Constitution. With the way everybody is paying attention to Syria, President Obama just might get away with simply decreeing citizenship for the illegal aliens with blanket amnesty, or whatever it will be called to avoid using the dreaded amnesty terminology, by Presidential Executive Order. President Clinton’s aide Paul Begala summed it up perfectly when he stated, “Stroke of the pen. Law of the land. Kinda cool.”

Then there is less than a month before Obamacare requires Americans to register with health exchanges in order to attain health insurance or else pay the fine. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, despite the piecemeal enactment being broken apart as President Obama selectively grants favored groups, companies, unions and politicians waivers from having to comply with Obamacare, is still barreling forward to forever drastically change the way Americans receive healthcare. Add to that the little inconvenience of postponing the implementation of the employer mandate but not the personal mandate means that businesses can simply refuse to insure their workers while the employees will have to either get insurance or pay a fine. Then there is the small miracle which is predicted to become very popular is opting for paying the fine for being uninsured as the fine is significantly less than insurance will end up costing very quickly. The first year the cost for insurance will be affordable, yet later when more people choose to opt out of buying insurance and simply pay the fine, which will cost less, knowing full well that they can always buy insurance immediately should they develop a serious health emergency without any fears that they could be turned down, costs will skyrocket. The eventual aim of Obamacare is to bankrupt the insurance providers forcing everyone on to a single payer government healthcare system. The real fiasco here is that both the majority of the Democrats and Republicans are supportive of forcing the entirety of the population of the United States into government healthcare so neither side will take any actions which will actually prevent the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act from taking effect. What made the reality that the aim is to collapse the health insurance industry came when President Obama gave employers an extra year before they will be required to insure their full-time employees. This will place all of the costs on the individual while the employers simply stop providing health insurance. The initial casualties have already been put on display as many employers have cancelled the options for insuring an employee’s spouse and even children. Another consequence has been the massive shift in hiring from full-time employees to a significant percentage of part-time employees. The percentage of part-time employment making up the new jobs each month is well over fifty percent and approached well over seventy-five percent. Who would have figured out that the most visible change caused by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act would end up being a shift to mostly part-time employees in order to get around the draconian measures and requirements on employers for providing healthcare for their employees but only those who are full-time.

Syria is a terrible situation that is likely to only get worse with time but it is not the only problem on the horizon as demonstrated above. What makes the state of the world even more troublesome is that Syria is far from the only problem in the Middle East and North Africa. Tunisia has devolved back into a series of chaotic demonstrations with the people very adamant that they want a far more secular government and will not tolerate creeping Sharia. Libya never actually established a national government and has broken up into mostly tribal forces exerting their influence over their separate tribal areas. Many of the cities either belong to a local tribal leader or to al-Qaeda or other terrorist forces. Mali is still in the throes of a civil war and the French are not securing much beyond the major cities. Nigeria is in a state of civil war with the Islamic forces controlling the north and destroying churches and murdering Christians where the two influences border each other. The Islamist forces are slowly pushing southward sewing destruction to everything of a Christian influence as they proceed. The Egyptian military has removed President Morsi and the Truth and Justice Party from control over all the levers of the government halting their drifting towards Islamist Sharia governance. Turkey is experiencing Sunni-Shiite violence with many of the Shiite fighters taking refuge in Iraq and being supplied by Iran and receiving training from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRCG). Yemen is in the grasp of a civil war with tribal forces in the northern parts of the country while fighting to hold off al-Qaeda from taking over the southern parts of the nation including some of its most vital ports. Somalia and the Horn of Africa is still an unruly disaster with the cities broken up into small enclaves with violence the rule, not the exception. And then there are the secretive peace negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians which are being held under a cloak of silence. Nobody appears to be certain about anything concerning these negotiations which with knowing President Obama, Secretary of State Kerry, Secretary of Defense Hagel and the State Department can only make any supporters of Israel extremely nervous. In addition the Israelis are represented by a Post-Zionist Tzipi Livni who was one of those who assisted in crafting the offers under Ehud Barak which offered to split Jerusalem and return over ninety percent, some have noted it was close to ninety-seven or ninety-eight percent of Judea and Samaria, to make up the Palestinian State. Add the rumors that President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Kerry provided Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Palestinian Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat letters guaranteeing them that every single Palestinian demand and precondition would be granted even if the United States had to force such a solution upon the Israelis. That would include removing close to nine-hundred-thousand Jews from Judea and Samaria, dividing Jerusalem placing all of Jerusalem’s holy sites beyond the reach and unable to be visited by the Israelis, and forcing an influx of as many as five and a half million Palestinian refugees inside pre-1967 Israel making the Palestinians the majority population in Israel thus erasing the Jewish State. I really hate rumors.

Republicans and the Empty Promise Syndrome

First off we need to define the Empty Promise Syndrome, sometimes called the Wimpy argument quoting the Popeye cartoon character who was always offering to “Pay you next Tuesday for a hamburger today.” Those cartoons must have had many Republican politicians earning money on the side as extras on the set as Wimpy never seemed to have any shortage of hamburgers to gulp down. To trace the beginning of the Empty Promise Syndrome infecting Republican politicians we need to go all the way back to 1986 of the Reagan Presidency and the Immigration Reform Bill which legalized at a minimum the three-million illegal aliens residing throughout the United States while promising to address and provide for a system of border enforcement which would make the borders of the United States virtually impenetrable. Currently there exist an estimated eleven- million to possibly over eighteen-million illegal aliens, the euphemistically denoted undocumented workers, citizens without papers, undocumented aliens, and any other of a half dozen terms which dance around but would never use such a harsh and loaded term as illegal. Somehow the agreement to grant citizenship today and impose enforcement tomorrow never quite delivered when tomorrow rolled around, a lot like Wimpy who can never be found on Tuesdays. But there are so many other examples that we had best stick to the two latest in the series.

If we were to remember back to just before Thanksgiving and on close to Christmas and then New Years the news reports were all buzzing about some looming doomsday threat called the Fiscal Cliff. The Republicans demanded spending cuts which would be at least equal to any tax increases. They would have preferred, or so they claimed, to have far more of the deficit cut by spending cuts than relying on tax increases. President Obama was insistent that the deficit reduction be levied completely by increased taxes on the rich as they had to be made to pay their fair share. With what were defined in perfect threats from on high was this sequester which would cut spending severely without any concerns for what was necessity and what was less vital and would destroy uncountable programs for the poor, the elderly, the children, the ecology, the Earth, the whatever you cared about and especially the military while ending the great recovery we have been experiencing (though many myself included are loathe to see any solid signs of this recovery unless that is what higher grocery prices are now called). In the end, President Wimpy offered spending cuts by March 1 for taxes on the rich today and the Republicans gave Obama everything he requested and set a new sequester date to force spending cuts as promised.

Well, here we are fast approaching March 1 and President Obama is demanding changes in the code resulting in more tax revenue and attempting to reduce spending cuts in any programs or departments with possible exceptions of certain areas the President finds unnecessary such as the Military. It is likely that President Obama would gladly put off any spending cuts forever and simply rearrange the tax codes and eliminate deductable items or at least reduce them or cap them all in order to cut the deficit without cutting spending. Actually, the President has even proposed that his adjustments to tax deductions and the tax codes will produce so much deficit reduction that he will even be able to propose additional spending with the extra funds his accounting has predicted. If the Republicans allow the President to fiddle with the tax code and tax deductions in lieu of the spending cuts promised at the end of last year’s Fiscal Cliff negotiations, they will have forfeited the collateral supposedly granted them of tax increases on the wealthy then for spending cuts and only spending cuts now. This simply means that if the President insists on increasing tax revenues instead of more spending cuts the Republicans should stand loudly upon the promise by the President that this would be the time for spending cuts and only spending cuts. Force the argument to be either the President reaches an agreement on spending cuts or President Obama will be responsible for the sequestration cuts when they occur. Force the choice on President Obama and the Democrats by passing a spending cuts bill which delivers what was promised and announce that the House of Representatives has met their responsibility and produced legislation for rational and safe spending cuts to reduce the deficit and that it is now left to the Democrat controlled Senate and the President to meet their obligations and keep their promises. After all, it is not like the across the board cuts required by the sequestration alternative would actually be anywhere near as debilitating as has been expressed by the fear mongering going on in some of the media and the White House.

Then there is another repeat performance being played out in Congress and that is once again immigration reform. This is forming up to be a complete and exact repeat of what occurred during the second half of President Reagan’s time in the White House and many of the exact same players are simply dusting off their old scripts and adjusting a few numbers and going through the same motions using the same terms and offering the same old lies as promises. As the old adage says, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” There is absolutely no reason for the Republicans, and any Democrats who actually care about the rule of law and the safety of the United States, allowing any form of amnesty or forgiveness and allowances to remain inside the borders, let alone working, for the approximately eleven million illegal aliens until there exist in place solid and uncompromising enforcement procedures that include security controls, observation abilities, formidable border barrier systems, and every possible technique applied and utilized to prevent any further illegal infiltrations. There can be no allowance of we will secure the border next Tuesday for total amnesty, or whatever sly and misleading name it be given, today. That was the basic promise which was never intended to be kept in 1986 and will likely be the offer given once again with every single amount of deceit included today.

There is one large and very unfortunate problem with the above. The truth be told there are many Republican who desire the lie of enforcement later for allowance and a path to citizenship today as that way they can unfurl the banner of supporting a closed border while not actually getting a closed border. Both sides, the Democrats in order to gather more voters for their candidates and the Republicans to provide less expensive labor for certain industries and businesses, honestly work together to guarantee that those they allowed into the United States are rewarded every so many years with citizenship and at the same time keep the border porous letting in the next wave of voters and workers enter the United States illegally to the benefit of both sides coffers and votes for reelection. One should not be too surprised then when once again we will witness a deceitful front played by those for whom taking a strong stand against illegal immigration and its effects upon the United States once again feign disgust when their votes allowing for immediate forgiveness in any form for the illegal immigrants currently in the country allowing them to remain, keep their jobs, and eventually gain an easy path to full citizenship while enforcement of our laws and control of the border are put aside to be addressed later. Of course later never comes as it is always now and later is, well, later. Do not expect this round to result in anything which falls far from the indecency pulled over on the American people in 1986 when Reagan allowed amnesty on the promise of future enforcement. We are still waiting for that later enforcement and who knows which later will arrive first; the last one or the one we can expect in the near future when the grand immigration compromise is announced with great fanfare and applause all around. My bet is neither enforcement will materialize before the Congress and some future President assure us that these thirty-some-million undocumented citizens will be the last and by allowing them legalization and documentation it will facilitate their soon enforcing our laws and border, and then there will be three soon to come promises.
