Releasing Terror Prisoners is a Proven Mistake Beyond Words

The Israelis have known all about the price paid for releasing terror prisoners for decades. The recidivation rate of released terror perpetrators approaches 100% which is reason enough to argue that releasing such prisoners is counterproductive and endangers all of society. In the cases Israel has witnessed and suffered through are made all the worse as releasing terrorists, even to include the terror masters and planners and those guilty of multiple acts of terror responsible for murdering of dozens upon dozens of lives, is actually accentuated and made even more insufferable has been the celebratory parades, huge demonstrations, and the recognition and adulation for the released terrorists goes even further beyond the cusp of acceptability by their societies. These recent released terrorists were met with huge supportive demonstrations and the sharing of sweets and general celebratory actions along with the Palestinian government rewarding the returning terrorist with large monetary awards and positions within the government, many simply honorary positions where they receive a salary but have no actual function officially though it is well documented that these positions are remunerations to give them salaries for their return and continuing terror operations. Many released terrorists which have been forced over the years every time any third party, be it the United Nations, European Union, United States or other outside third party pushing the grand, new peace proposal, have demanded Israel release some number of terror prisoners in an act of good faith in order to bribe the Palestinian to come to the negotiations table. Of course there is never any enforced demand of the Palestinians to make concessions to bring Israel to the negotiations as it is understood that the Israelis are always ready to try and negotiate peace and willing to try despite how futile the effort may prove.

There has been a development which should have convinced the Americans that releasing terrorist prisoners from the Guantanamo Detainment Facility is fool hearty, as one of the foremost suspects of being behind the planning and also directing the Benghazi attack, Sufian bin Qumu, resulted in the destruction of the American Consulate and the Deaths of Ambassador Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said concerning questions of whether the attack in Benghazi was an al-Qaeda operation, “There’s no indication at this point that core al-Qaeda was involved or planned these attacks. And these are not official affiliates of al-Qaeda.” Ms. Psaki’s statement appears to be contradicted by Sufian bin Qumu’s Guantanamo file which states that the former detainee has historic ties to the al-Qaeda network, at one time training “…at Osama bin Laden’s Torkham camp.” Tom Joscelyn, a senior fellow with Foundation for Defense of Democracies, identified Qumu was connected to al-Qaeda “and bin Qumu was identified as an Al Qaeda member who was receiving a monthly stipend for his family. He was important enough to Al Qaeda to record his monthly stipend on a 9/11 financier’s laptop, which should tell you something about his place within the Al Qaeda sphere.” All in all, the suspicions that a former al-Qaeda member was responsible for operational planning and execution of the terrorist strike on the American Consulate in Benghazi after being released from custody in Guantanamo Detainment Facility speaks volumes on the wisdom, or lack thereof, of releasing hardened terrorists back into the population and having expectations that they are not going to return to terrorist activities.

One of the reasons which should have been learned from the Cold War is that those who are ideological adherents to a radical and extreme philosophy should never be mistaken for reformed no matter the evidence. Ideological extremists are usually intelligent and are fully capable of acting in a manner which will please their captors and persuade them to believe they have reformed and are a reasonably safe risk if released. Unfortunately, as has been proven throughout history, die-hard ideologues and true-believers cannot be rehabilitated and will return to their revolutionary, or terrorist, activities immediately after release as that is the main cause and driving force in their lives. Still, President Obama continues to seek nations who will be willing to allow Guantanamo detainees so they can be released and the facility closed fulfilling a campaign promise from his first term. The President does not care if they will return to terrorist activity as that is a problem he has refused to take ownership. President Obama fully believes that terrorism will trail off and end as a result of his foreign policy which is actually not having a foreign policy beyond ignoring all things beyond America’s shores. The sole apparent foreign policy position President Obama has enforced has been enabling Islamists while doing everything possible to sacrifice Israel on the table of appeasement. We have all witnessed President Obama from his speech in Cairo early in his first term and his first speech given beyond American borders to his backing of President Morsi and backing the Muslim Brotherhood and his refusal to support the Green Revolution in Iran and his refusal to take any actions to end the societal genocide in Syria and the fact that one of President Obama’s closest friends who heads another nation being Turkey’s Prime Minister Erdogan. These small snapshots of President Obama over his years in the White House give a strong indication of his apparent backing of Islamist leadership taking hold throughout the Middle East and North Africa and may further explain the drive in conjunction with the Palestinian leadership to force Israel to release over one-hundred terrorist murderers including some who had committed the most violent and horrific terror attacks. The proven view of President Obama and the feckless actions by Secretary of State Kerry should give the Israeli leadership sufficient reason to resist all further pressures from the United States no matter the potential ramifications as to allow Obama and Kerry free hands to mold Israeli dealings with the Palestinians as even a total pulling of backing from the White House would prove to do less damage over time than agreeing to the framework deal which is being sold by Kerry and his entourage.

United States Secretary of State John Kerry began his follow-up to President Obama’s visit to the Middle East on Saturday by unveiling his great new hope for developing negotiations between the Palestinian Authority and Israeli leaders in order to solve the dilemmas and produce the long-sought two states for two peoples living in peace and security side-by-side. Secretary Kerry had been making grand praises for his mysterious new plan to restart the peace talks between Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian Authority leadership and Benyamin Netanyahu and the Israeli leadership. The current situation is as favorable as any in recent history for establishing a dialogue and possibly even making some headway towards settling the final status agreement from which a Palestinian state would become not only possible but a viable entity as Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has appointed his Justice Minister Tzipi Livni to lead the Israeli negotiating team and take charge of all negotiations with the Palestinians. One would be hard pressed to find another politician or negotiator in Israel who would present a more lenient and accepting individual than Tzipi Livni as she has indicated she favors, among other things, release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli custody, a partial acceptance of Palestinian ‘right of return’ accepting some number of refugees into Israel, returning Israel to the pre-1967 War lines, the Green Line, with only mutually agreed land swaps making any necessary or desired changes, granting the Palestinians all of east Jerusalem as their capital including the entirety of the Old City, the Temple Mount, and the Western Wall along with the plaza adjacent to it. One might be led to think that with Tzipi Livni leading the negotiations that there would be a peace treaty quickly as what more could Mahmoud Abbas demand that she would not comply with and grant?

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Kerry began his initiative with a meeting in the Jordanian Capital of Amman with Mahmoud Abbas where they discussed what would be necessary to restart negotiations between Abbas and the Israeli negotiators. Kerry was reportedly told that Israel would necessarily have to freeze all building in the disputed areas which are expected to be returned to the Palestinians, accept the pre-1967 War lines as the start point in negotiations for borders with any changes requested by Israel subject to Palestinian acceptance or denial, and the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. Kerry was soon armed with Palestinian President Abbas’s conditions, the very same conditions he initially made when President Obama attempted to bully Israel into complying with early in his first term which resulted eventually in a crushing end to the peace process as even after Israel froze building in the disputed areas Abbas refused to meet. That evening Secretary Kerry began his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu where he related the events and substance of the meeting with Abbas from earlier in the day. As the meeting continued they were joined by Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, Netanyahu’s personal envoy Yitzhak Molcho and his national security adviser Yaakov Amidror so that the entire Israeli team could be brought into the process.

It has been reported that the Israelis were informed that in order to have Mahmoud Abbas return to the negotiations and stay from pressing charges against Israel in the international courts such as the ICC Israel would be required to begin the transfer of the lands within Area B from joint control to unilateral Palestinian control for civil and security responsibilities removing all Israeli influence and having these areas incorporated into Area A where Israelis are forbidden entry without Palestinian approval, and Israel would be required to release prisoners from Israeli custody though the exact numbers or suggested lists were not discussed. Secretary Kerry also relayed that Mahmoud Abbas had stressed that Israeli settlements endanger the peace process. Whether anything else was discussed with Netanyahu and his negotiating team has not been released though there have been rumors that Obama agreed to allow Israel to implement a silent construction freeze where no new building would be approved but there would be no official statement or recognition of such a freeze in construction. This sound very much like what was in existence under Minister of Defense Ehud Barak in the last Israeli government and one will need to wait and see if Netanyahu will have his new Minister of Defense Moshe Yaalon or whoever else will be charged with approvals for building permits in Judea and Samaria also to refuse to sign off on any new building permits. As far as restarting the peace process we hold out little hope. Just a reminder to those who will revel in these supposedly new initiatives and the introduction of a path to renewed talks that we have seen these exact same demands from Abbas before the last time he refused to restart the peace process. Israel enforced a ten month building freeze during which Abbas made every effort to avoid talks until three weeks before the freeze was to end when he returned to negotiate the making of the building freeze permanent before he would take even an initial step towards talks. He will once again find reasons to protest and if his protests and complaints are not honored, Abbas will simply once again begin adding more and more precondition and requirements on the Israelis in order to avoid peace talks.

Secretary of State Kerry may actually believe he knows the secret formula that would lead to peace between the Palestinians and Israelis. His making such a statement is only proof that he has not been paying attention to the situation all those years he has sat in the United States Senate. The one point that Secretary Kerry and all others need to understand is that Palestinian President Abbas cannot make a peace with Israel that leaves Israel as the Jewish State. As soon as Abbas would make an agreement to have a Palestinian state formed next to Israel instead of replacing Israel he would be a man marked for death. Just as happened in Gaza once the Israeli people and IDF were removed, Hamas will revolt and take over Judea and Samaria along with any parts of Jerusalem which were surrendered to Abbas for the Palestinian state and to make peace. Once Hamas had taken control of all the Palestinian lands they would try, convict and execute every single leading figure from the Palestinian Authority who had anything to do with forging the peace agreement or cooperating in any manner with the Israeli security and other personnel. They did the exact same thing in Gaza after their successful coup. With this as an eventual possibility which would follow any peace agreement which Abbas makes with Israel, even if it is only in Abbas’s head, he will refuse to even negotiate as there is always the fear that Israel might call his bluff and accept all of his preconditions. Abbas is a survivor and all of his actions are planned to keep him alive and he believes that any peace that does not erase the Jewishness of Israel or erase Israel altogether is a peace which will result in his death. It is this threat which drives Abbas and leaves to his final trump card, the demand that Israel would never acquiesce to. That final demand is for Israeli to agree to blanket acceptance for the ‘right of return’ of close to if not more than five million refugees into Israel with full citizenship and rights. Such an agreement would be the end of Israel as it now exists and that the next election would turn Israel into another Arab Muslim state as that is the intent and only truth Abbas will ever settle for as the peace he seeks. That is the only agreement that has even a remote chance of allowing Abbas to continue to live.

Unfortunately, there is a problem with this settlement as well. The current situation brings along with it a near endless amount of funds from Europe, the United States, the United Nations, the Arab world and sundry other institutions and organizations. These funds have made Mahmoud Abbas a very wealthy man who lives a life of comfort. Should the Palestinian state he supposedly seeks ever be established these funds would begin to dry up and eventually stop. With things the way they are, Abbas simply sobs and cries into the closest microphone with his regular old canard of the Jews are destroying our economy and woe are us under the Israeli occupation ending with we will cease to eat or even exist without many billions of Euros and Dollars immediately. And every time he does his song and dance routine the monies roll in from all over the world. The countries of the world scurry and hold emergency meetings to save the Palestinians and Abbas pockets his commission, say likely twelve percent or so. As long as the world is willing to pay the Palestinians to seek peace the Palestinians will complain and pretend to seek peace blaming everybody’s favorite scapegoats, the Jews, for denying the Palestinians a state of their own and refusing to meet the few minor preconditions, actually not preconditions but more obligations according to Abbas, thus denying the world a peaceful Middle East. Truth be told, if the world really desires peace between the Palestinians and Israelis then they are going to have to begin to pay for peace by promising funding only after peace has been made and the terrorism completely halted. Anything else will simply facilitate the endless continuation of the present situation guaranteeing absolutely no possibility for peace or change.

Will President Obama Challenge Hamas and Other Palestinian Threats?

Mushir al-Masri, speaking as a Hamas representative from the Al-Aqsa Mosque, declared that should United States President Barack Obama visit the Temple Mount during his excursion in Israel, it will be equivalent to a declaration of war on the Arab and the Islamic world. He demanded that there should be a declared third intifada and requested Egyptian assistance in the “resistance” of such a desecration by the American President take place. Khalid al-Batash, a senior Islamic Jihad member, also called to prevent Obama from visiting the compound. And these were not the most definitive of warnings. Sheikh Akrameh Sabri, former Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and current head of the higher Islamic council was quoted by AFP warning, “Any visitor is welcome to Al-Aqsa, but they should follow the regulations of the Waqf and enter through the Lions’ Gate and not through Mughrabi Gate, to ensure Muslim sovereignty. The visit shouldn’t have a political theme to it because Al-Aqsa belongs to Muslims only and it is their place of worship and we refuse that any Israeli official accompanies the visitor.” Hatem Abdel Qader, head of the Jerusalem portfolio for the Fatah movement, said that Obama’s visit should be coordinated with the Palestinian Authority and with the Jordanians.

With such demands and even the somewhat overt threats makes one wonder if President Obama will simply avoid making any visit to the Temple Mount and what kind of result would such produce. It can be expected that should President Obama not visit the Temple Mount at all just to assure that he does not insult Islam or the easily riled Palestinians that such will be interpreted as a slight and a surrender to Israeli pressures which obviously had advised the President not to risk a visit. Whether or not the Israelis actually gave such advice will be of no consequence, the expressions of anger and reaction to insult is all that matters. Why else do the different Palestinian groups and even individual spokespeople make contradictory statements which when taken in full cover every possible action or lack of action as insulting and offensive to Islam and the Palestinian cause. These statements, demands and counters are made such that after President Obama has returned to the United States the Palestinians can choose which demands or warnings were transgressed and have the appropriate riots and violence targeting Israelis as the responsible and guilty party. The Friday riots after services on the Temple Mount were far more violent, viscous and animated this week and included not only the usual rock throwing and riots but also included Molotov cocktails and greater numbers and severity of attacks against security personnel stationed around the Temple Mount. This should be viewed as a warning of violence to come and a preliminary riot on which to build upon at a later date.

There has been an increase in violence with an emphasis on attacks in Judea and Samaria that has been escalating for the past weeks. There has been a definitive rise in rock and firebomb attacks on motorists and Israeli housing and crops. Some have already referred to these increased acts of violence as the beginning of yet another intifada. It is very likely that such is actually the case and that the plan is to use President Obama’s visit and some otherwise unimportant event as the trigger for the third (some say the count is as high as six) intifada. Additionally, there will be some within the leadership of the Palestinians will also blame Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu for having formed a coalition which they see as unhelpful and biased against the Palestinians. This will be the complaint no matter which parties are included within the coalition and even with Tzipi Livni, one of the most likely to offer unprecedented concessions in peace talks, being placed completely responsible for any peace talks or other dealings between Israel and the Palestinians. Prime Minister Netanyahu is likely making this decision relying of Mahmoud Abbas to refuse any offer no matter how generous that Tzipi Livni would offer. This is another reason for another intifada as starting such violence would likely scrub any possibility of restarting the peace process while such increased violence is occurring. The Palestinians also are likely counting on the rest of the world, especially the Europeans, to demand Israeli gifts and concessions in order to end the violence and entice the Palestinians back to the negotiating table and restarting the peace process. We have seen this act so many times over the years that one might be tempted to think that it would not still work. The truth is that as long as Israel is being forced to sacrifice the Europeans and much of the world will gladly demand such sacrificial acts despite knowing they will be fruitless and will not engender any advances in the peace talks. But first, will President Obama actually visit the Temple Mount and if so which gate will he use? Then comes the other point of inquiry, will he attend to the Temple Mount with security provided by Israel or by the Palestinians and depending on which, how safe should President Obama feel?
