Governing Stagnation on Both Sides of Arab-Israeli Conflict

From appearances the Israeli government has decided the time has come to act decisively and end the conflict once and for all before the old guard loses its control and is pushed from power by younger and more aggressive leadership. In the past five years many of the old lions have wandered off the playing field making an appearance here and there still reliving their old rivalries and people listen if only to remember. Soon those memories will crystalize the legacies of the leadership which has ruled the roost, in some cases ruled just a bit too long and their legacies may pay for their refusal to slide quietly into the shadows only to emerge as elder statesmen who also serve a purposed. Often that purpose is to come out and save the new leadership from itself and at other times to make a bold statement which either rallies the people at a crucial point or to give a last shot hope to relive their influential days and remind all why they prefer to remember the old leaders fondly. Often if a leader had been at the head of a party so long that only the few can remember who their predecessor was, it is past time for some change. Unfortunately any leader who has survived that long at the head of a party it is often due to their suppression of those who might challenge them either though subordinating them or by destroying their credibility and squashing all opposition. This is a weakness of a Parliamentary system which has no limit on the number of years one is permitted to hold the position of Prime Minister. When anybody is permitted to hold that position indefinitely then they can ride at the top of their party over decades which stymies the younger leaders from attaining the top position and eventually forms an oligarchic echo chamber which places a stationary grasp on the reins of power preventing change or growth from below which is nearly impossible to toppled from within. This creates a catastrophic change from without leaving a vacuum at the top of the Party as the Party will eventually fall and find its support became as old and unable to adapt as that leadership had become.

Such systems often come about because a situation comes about which defines elections and supports a particular view for the public for as long as the condition remains unchanged. Such situations are often defined by a conflict such as the rule of Sir Winston Churchill becoming Prime Minister of England for the duration of World War II as he had proven to be the man who recognized the threat and had warned about the errors being made and thus had all the appearances of being the man destined to lead England through the war. This he did and has received mostly acclaim but has also faced some critiques far less complimentary. Still, once the war had ended England moved on and Churchill did return to hold the office of Prime Minister briefly but proved to be the man of the hour whose hour had passed. But what will happen if the situations remain static or slowly escalating but never quite boiling over? Then the man of the hour can become the man of the decade and even the indispensable man leading until the situation finally is relieved or it changes drastically thus ending the ability to continue the crisis situation as impending and thus allowing for half measures and other acts which do little to change the situation, often a dire situation, but also perpetuating a stagnation which becomes unhealthy for the nation.

So, what are the signs of such a leadership? There will be measures and action often taken against those who challenge the status-quo and pose a threat to bring the long challenge to a head which will demand actual solutions instead of halfway acts which only serve to kick the can down the road. This can have been observed in the Arab Palestinian leadership where even when the man at the top is replaced it is by his trusted and longtime second in command. This was exactly what occurred when Yasser Arafat died and Mahmoud Abbas became the man of the hour. Now we are watching the slow replacement of Mahmoud Abbas as he steps down from one of his myriad of leadership positions and even is permitted to all but appoint his successor, Saab Erekat. We will likely see other familiar names become more prevalent as Mahmoud Abbas slowly sinks into the sunset to enjoy his ill-gotten booty retiring to somewhere most likely in Europe or elsewhere that he believes will allow him a long retirement. The other alternative is this change has been forced upon him as younger and more aggressive segments of the society are beginning to beat the drums of change. Once that tune starts to escalate and you have held the position basically defined as President for Life, well, then your life may become chopped off such that you are replaced through a coup. After these coups come, they retain the forms of the apparatus of the former governance leaving them in place; many of the affirming ‘yes men’ remain in place as they can be counted upon to be supportive and not actually seeking ultimate power. Then the new leadership will give the ‘old guard’ a choice of early retirement or the less healthy forced retirement. The wise take the early retirement and usually retire to distant shores where they will be welcomed and granted safe keeping.

So we will now be able to watch as Mahmoud Abbas will slowly give over his multitude of positions of power possibly holding to his leadership of the Fatah Party simply because he would then be allowed to have a security detail guarding him from any unforeseen acts of greater permanence if situations appear to be calling for his return as the new leadership does not meet expectations. Often leaders who self-terminate their hold on power get to live longer though they will face getting up each morning for the rest of their lives not being the man of the hour with all looking to them for favor and decisive leadership. Of course continued leadership demands that there be no decisive leadership, just the appearance of such. These types of situations are what likely spawned the coining of the phrase, “the more things change, the more they remain the same.” Often these apparent leaders who appear to rule because they are the one who has proven to be most understanding and decisive in addressing the problems of the hour despite the fact that the crisis never ends and only seems to remain just slightly more desperate as the months tick by. The people are placated by the sacrifice of those who are a threat to the leadership of the determined leaders while power is distributed to people the leader trusts to serve the status-quo and retaining the man of the hour as the man of the decade or even decades. These support staff are often well taken care of and every once in a while one must be sacrificed in order to allow for the man at the top to scapegoat them as the reason decisive actions were not taken when the opportunity was present and the man of the hour faced that hour. When facing that hour, that critical moment where everything hinges on the actions or lack of actions of the leadership, the one who desires longevity over all else will allow that moment to pass while a real leader who really desires to be the man of the hour and be remembered for taking that opportunity no matter the result and caution to the wind, they act. Real leaders seek to have such moments where they face the crucial test as that is what defines them.

Such leaders are the great ones remembered for all time. They faced the greatest test of their lives and acted. Some come through victorious and are lauded before they pass slowly into a satisfied retirement and others fail and bring ruin for which the people often must find a leader who can repair the damage. Strangely enough that can be the same person who failed but who has convinced the people that they have learned and grown as a result of their error and are also capable of presenting a clear path back. Often this requires them to succinctly define their failure and promise to make the necessary repairs no matter how painful, preferable personally painful but often also for the people and the nation, but necessary after systemic failures. Then there are the lingerers, the leaders whose greatest share of efforts are to perpetuate their importance and holding of positions of leadership. They come into prominence by presenting themselves as the solution to the biggest problems facing the party, group, community, company and even nation and they appear to have a firm grasp on the problems of the day and prove themselves as the sole person qualified to face such threats or problems competently. Such leaders are often great at defining the problem and stating a clear path to the solution and ameliorating the problem and seeing the way beyond where calmer waters prevail. These leaders will always have ready a plan which will work and they like reminding all that they are the person of this hour and after all, who are you going to trust? In most nations there is a time limit or term limitation of the service of any person to lead in a democratic form of government, be it a republic, parliamentary or some other representative governance, for a set period and not beyond. There are many ideas on how best to limit such rulers, be it two terms, a decade or whatever limitation is put forth in the constitution, charter or other delineating definition of the workings of the national governance. Omitting limitations on holding positions of power can lead to stagnation in the governance which is potentially more dangerous than having the wrong person at the helm as the wrong person somehow chosen as the leader is usually removed at the next elections if not sooner. But what if the person placed in the highest office is mainly interested in not taking any risks which might force them from power and you have a recipe for stagnation where the pressing situation is the permanence of the situation.

This may be the situation which has been present in the Arab-Israeli situation and there are positions galore which appear to place their greatest promise in promoting a permanent standoff where neither side desires an end to the problem because once a solution is found then their usefulness as the uncontested leader eventually ends as the situation boils over, often at home when the people have had enough of living with an apparently stagnant threat they know should have been resolved ages ago. The problem with the Arab-Israeli problem is that powers that exist beyond the problem have advantage in fomenting permanence of the problem thus retailing their importance to their often dependent side of the contest. This has been true of both sides in the Arab-Israeli problem, none of the powers that be desire a conclusive resolving of the problem thus they perpetuate the problem by limiting the more powerful side and supporting the more vulnerable side. This is further perpetuated by the Arab League because they will only accept one solution, the end of Israel as the state for the Jewish people and a place for the Arabs who are referred to not as the Arabs they are but as the Palestinians who the other Arab nations refuse to allow to live within their lands as giving them equal rights would remove their man-made unique identity which is wielded like a maul bashing and denting Israel but never delivering that final knockout as doing so would normalize the Arab Palestinians and thus allowing their return to within the Arab peoples body, something they know they must avoid as these Arabs have been transformed into a weaponized people incapable of living in peace with their neighbors. The Arab nations know that without Israel they would be facing the so-called Palestinians in their own backyards. Thus they must keep the problem static.

The United Nations, particularly their human rights divisions, have built a multi-trillion dollar a year business around the Arab-Israeli conflict and thus have a financial reason to perpetuate the situation. They use a similar method as does the Arab League, checking Israeli use of power to prevent a resolution while granting the Arab Palestinians with immunity while blaming Israel for the terrorism and all other situations perpetuated by those outside powers with the greatest influence. The Europeans have also taken a decisive side but also the more difficult side. They have realized that they, in a moment of moral weakness, they temporarily did a moral act, they allowed for the Jews to reconstitute their homelands and now they wish to erase their moment of decency. The Europeans, and the Arabs and Muslims and almost everywhere that Jews resided prefer that the Jews be subjugated. This is not possible if the Jews have a refuge where they rule the lands, Israel. When the Jews were spread across the world in small communities shared amongst the world the world received the benefit of the Jewish inventiveness and work ethic and they served the purpose in each nation under the control of their ‘betters’ who had been empowered by G0d to rule the Jews who were a fallen people no longer deserving of Hashem’s love. The return of Israel and the empowered Jew puts to a lie the forsaken argument and places the Jews on an even relationship with the other nations. How can a world predicated on the Jew as weak and dependent on the protections provided by the ‘others’ who were their betters now have a strong military and the capability of self-determinations and self-rule? This was something which was not to be permitted and thus it became necessary to clip the wings of the Jewish state and even erase it should the opportunity present itself. Be aware that if the European nations had the military advantage and could destroy Israel through use of arms without their own nations facing grievous losses we would be witnessing a new Crusades to return Jerusalem and the Holy Lands to their proper shared control with Islam and Christianity sharing the spoils of a destroyed and burning Israel and the subjugation once again of the Jews. That is but one of the meanings of “Never Again.”

Still, Israel is partly to blame for her situation as she has allowed these outside forces to have sway over her and allowed their neutering of Israel’s right to control her borders. Israel had not fully shaken off the yoke of slavery before the nations of the world. Israeli leadership reflects the state of mind of all too many of the people who still believe that they must gain the favor of others. They have yet to realize that such is a fool’s game played at the risk of their homelands. Israel has the might, the right and the International Law all on her side to once and for all end the Arab ‘Palestinian’ false claims against her and to enforce her borders, her legal and recognized by treaties and Charter of the United Nations to at the very least the lands, all of the lands, from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. Further, since the Arabs living in Judea and Samaria are actually Jordanian, Syrian, Lebanese, Egyptian, Iraqi, Yemeni and also Saudi Arabian roots and have taken up arms against Israel then Israel has the right as a nation to evict these peoples unless they pledge legally their subservience to Israeli rule and swear they will no longer lift up arms against the State of Israel. Those who hold positions of power within the Fatah, Palestinian Authority, PLO, PLC, PNC, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, or any other terrorist or separatist movement making claim against Israel are to be given status as persona non grata and exiled from the State of Israel, given airfare and movement of their personal property and, if Israel wishes to clean its collective conscience for this act, a remittance to cover some of their costs for separation from their position of prominence which had allowed them to steal billions of dollars over the years from the very people they claimed to represent. End of the Arab-Israeli conflict unless and until one or more of Israel’s neighbors decides they wish to annihilate the Jews and destroy Israel again. Then, this time, should any of Israel’s neighbors decide to wage war, then Israel should respond and not stop their advance until the other side surrendered and accepted Israeli terms for peace. This time Israel should dictate the terms of the cessation of hostilities and ignore the calls by the rest of the world leaders especially by those claiming to be the best of friends Israel has ever had. Then when the adversary who initiated this war had offered complete surrender and agreement with the Israeli dictated terms including the new boundaries as losing a war, even against Israel, has to hold the potential for loss of lands or all the world is doing is resetting the conditions which existed at the start of the last war to give the adversaries of Israel the same opportunity time after time to destroy Israel and never have to pay for their failures in an offensive war. That is not how it works for any other nation and should not be the way it works for Israel as a country. If the world decides they desire to remove Israel from the United Nations, Israel should send each nation supporting such a move a thank you card and use the monies saved to give her people a small tax break. Then Israel needs to remove every last United Nations minder from within her border, dissolve every United Nations recognized NGO which does not drop all ties with the United Nations and resolve to never again cooperate with any United Nations’ probe, study or other pursuit without first being granted permission from the government as the United Nations should then be treated as they have proven themselves to be, a foreign party interested largely in the destruction of Israel by any means.

Israel needs a leader, a real leader who can withstand the slings and arrows of outrageous opportunists (forgive me Shakespeare) and exercise her dominion over her lands on her actual and defined borders under the San Remo Conference and all concomitant treaties which would leave defined from within the British Mandate and presumably enforceable by the British Crown all the lands between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea on her eastern and western boundaries, the Blue Line with Lebanon to the north and the Negev, Sinai border as recognized by Egypt and Israel by peace treaty, and leaving Gaza for all those Arabs desiring of retaining the separatist definitions of being an Arab Palestinian. Those remaining Arabs residing east of the 1949 Armistice Lines and not currently holders of an Israel citizenship identifying documents will be permitted to remain within Israeli borders and retain those lands on which they have proper and recognized deed and will be permitted to apply for Israeli citizenship after a period of five years in which no family member was involved in any act of terrorism or felonious criminal activities. Once so approved an oath of allegiance to the State of Israel and the showing of a meaningful knowledge of Israeli history will be required in order to become a full citizen of the State of Israel. Those desiring not to travel such a route may remain as resident aliens and will be treated with respect to land ownership over that which they have recognized deeds and remain within the law and not posing any threat to the State of Israel. Should they be found to be aiding or committing of terrorism or other violent felonious acts they may face exile from the lands of Israel in lieu of a prison term. Should they accept exile their return within Israel will result in their being incarcerated to serve the full sentence of which they were adjudicated to serve. These are the powers all other states possess and how other nations end defensive wars taken against them from without and how they treat similar threats from within. Israel is not asking for anything beyond her rights as an equal amongst nations. Israel is demanding to be seen, treated and respected as an equal amongst nations and those who desire to demean and subjugate or destroy Israel or her Jewish flavor can expect similar in return from Israel. Israel is prepared to receive in kind as she gives and give in kind as she receives from each and every nation no more and no less. This is the promise any true leader of Israel and her people deserve and a growing number of her people are beginning to demand. Such a leader will be found and elected to prove up to such an immense challenge and should they fail then another should be sought. It will take a person with an unbendable will and a knowledge of where Israel is and where she deserves to be and have the plan to achieve exactly that and the willingness to face the slings and arrows of outrageous oppositions from both without and within. Of the two the forces from within will prove the undoing of many and will take a true leader in every sense of the title. This will be the kind of leader who sets their sights on this lofty goal, moves ever more determined to achieve that high set goal and once the job completed and the results cemented will simply retire to their farm in the Galilee or their herds in the Judean Hills or their winery overlooking the Kinneret, or their solar farm in the Negev Desert. That will also be a true leader who will be remembered as were the greats of Biblical fame.

Retirement locations one can call their blissful home, their Farm in the Galilee or their Herds in the Judean Hills or their Winery overlooking the Kinneret, or their Solar Farm in the Negev Desert or their Simple Chalet Overlooking a Scenic Expanse of Rolling Hills or Expanse of Desert or Lush Plains Dotted by Farms and Grazing Lands or Whatever Scenery One Desires as All are Available Within Israel.

Whenever one mentions the state of violence which exists in the situation which has come to be known as the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the story almost always goes to the propaganda media story of the overwhelming power of Israel against the weak and defenseless Palestinians stone throwers. There are a number of discrepancies with reality already conveyed in that sentence which trying to explain to people is an uphill battle where whatever you say gets you accused of being a Zionist stooge or simply a liar. Fortunately I don’t care about the names and will actually correct them and explain I am not a Zionist stooge, I’m the real deal, a proud Zionist, and then I give them the whole story. For the sake of brevity and to not bore everyone I’ll give the short version. Somewhere in my youth I realized I wanted to go live in Israel, to return home which is how every Zionist I have ever known describes the yearning. At age nine I made a pair of promises to myself, first to take care of my parents and be a dutiful, caring and loving son and second to make Aliyah and live the remainder of my life in Israel. My father inquired what my plans were once I had retired after a serious injury placed me on disability and I explain the two promises. He released me from the first explaining I was not getting any younger and encouraged me to make Aliyah and so I have. The one quirk is I do not remember sharing either of my plans with anyone around me but friends from as far back as junior high school have claimed I had mentioned, often casually as kids often do about their future plans, that I would eventually live in Israel. Most of them classified that little comment as a youthful enthusiasm and not an actual goal, my most heartfelt dream. Now happily living my dream I also have gained a closer look at the situation which I was not totally aware of before coming to Israel because the media has not reported honestly on much of what is happening and what I see has me worried for the safety and lives of the Palestinians and angry that the media conceals so much of the realities in the Arab-Israeli conflict which would be the correct terminology to use instead of Palestinian-Israeli conflict. So, what has been concealed and omitted from the story. Let’s look into that part.

Whenever there is a conflict which escalates to the point that the Israeli police, security personnel and especially IDF soldiers (Israeli Defense Forces) are forced to respond with riot control or even more drastic responses the media is filled with stories with pictures explaining how the Israelis overreacted and used disproportional force against mere stone throwing youths. When the terminology ‘youths’ is employed, youths would be better defined as Palestinians from age twelve through age forty-five and when confronting Israeli law enforcement or IDF the younger participants are always placed to the fore while the older Palestinians remain in the rear where they often employ slings or even firearms and of late roman candle fireworks and Molotov cocktails and other improvised weaponry. The media reporting on these confrontations are often fed their stories or write them following the script which has accompanied the pictures for decades now to the point that most confrontations are not reported at all and only those which result in a violent response, especially if there are wounded, or worse, killed Palestinians do these stories make the news. This paints a disturbing image for the Israelis attempting to keep the peace and protect innocents from both sides. The pictures are more often than not provided by Arabist sympathizers with a story to sell and are often misleading or outright fabrications. This kind of reporting was revealed by a reporter for the BBC we covered with link to source video report in our story World Enters Save Hamas from Israeli Annihilation Mode which gives an accounting of just a small sliver of the lies and errors given in social media which is also indicative of many mainstream media coverages as they rely heavily on hearsay and social media reports. They receive many of their videos and still pictures from what they refer to as trusted sources who are stringers often also employed by the Palestinian propaganda department who aids them in their efforts including giving them the lead to scheduled provocations planned in advance. Often these provocations have as much as two hours of preparatory work where the pictures of youths throwing rocks are videoed and pictures taken while they throw stones to miss the cameramen but at empty areas and well before they confront the IDF. The pictures which show the Palestinian youths throwing rocks and it appears that the camera personnel have to be shooting their footage from the front of the stone throwers such that you believe they are embedded with the Israelis, this never made you think and consider the absurdity of such pictures. In such a situation the camera personnel would not be calmly shooting video from within the IDF ranks as if such a situation presented itself the IDF would escort the photographers to their rear to protect them and allow them to shoot from behind the soldiers, not from amongst or in front of them as that would threaten the photographers safety. When it is made to appear like the camera personnel are within the ranks of IDF soldiers it is often Palestinians dressed in IDF uniforms. For more examples of these types of events simply search for Pallywood online and even with the videos there take care and view them with a touch of cynicism.

The truths which are simply not told are that there is an escalating Intifada happening in Israel right now and has been escalating for the past few years. Many Israelis refer to these actions as the ‘Silent Intifada’ because even the Israeli media is downplaying the realities. For the past six weeks the situation on the Temple Mount had become unbearable for Jews wishing to visit the holiest site in all of Judaism and an actual hell for the Police who are assaulted daily with barely a day going by where the police on the Temple Mount are injured requiring medical aid on sight or, if less fortunate, taken for further treatment at an Israeli hospital. The rock throwing at vehicles often done from ambush positions or thrown from cars driven in the opposite direction which is queued when to start accelerating when the intended target passes a point approaching the waiting attack vehicle on the road’s ambush point. These ambush points change but there are some which are regularly used on major roadways which many are required to drive as there is no other route they can use which does not add hours to their commute. The rocks used are often the size of crochet balls and can be as large as cinderblocks and bricks and have similar effect when striking a windshield. There have been a number of seriously wounded drivers and passengers and some fatalities including many children in both categories. These ambush points are well planned and upon the arrival of authorities the Palestinians conducting the ambush melt back into the nearby Arab neighborhoods where they are protected from arrest by the rest of the Palestinians in the neighborhoods. Many do this as they believe their youths are just having harmless fun and if they should not protect them then they would likely face the retribution of the terrorist groups who often arranged these attacks and have been known to summarily execute those they believe have assisted the Israelis in any manner.

Another side to these attacks is they are often paid for and planned, including training the Palestinian youths where necessary, by anarchists and extreme leftists from across Europe. These are well trained provocateurs with much experience in using rioting to assault soldiers and law enforcement personnel and the best uses of media especially in editing film to produce videos of the law enforcement in the worst possible light. These provocateurs arrive often in teams which have their own media personnel who can film confrontations and are excellent editors to produce the most damning short video which then they place on-line and then have their own people start tweeting it and then enforcing their initial tweet with retweets guaranteeing it trending and going viral. The fact these videos also reinforce the storyline of the mean, nasty, criminal Israeli forces beating down innocent Palestinians who have done nothing to provoke such responses only serves for it to be believed and thus shared. Israeli law enforcement and IDF are not permitted to take videos themselves and place anything on social media and as these events are preplanned on the Palestinians side, the only video taken is often by Palestinian sympathizers or European instigators well versed in media manipulations. There do exist some videos which show actual footage of entire provocations which were captured on surveillance cameras but the picture quality is poor and the confrontations are planned such that the actual events are difficult to discern accurately beyond anything but the Palestinian assaulted a checkpoint or patrol and this eventually led to a response by the Israelis who had come under attack. What is seldom if ever uploaded to the Internet are the attempted confrontations where the Israeli soldiers or law enforcement were assaulted and provoked but because there was no real or perceived threat to life or limb they simply did not respond. This is the result of the majority of these confrontations and is so not newsworthy as in choosing news stories the old adage still applies, “If it bleeds, it leads.” You will always see the man bites dog story and not so much dog bites man despite the fact that dog bites man story is the norm and probably outnumbers the man bites dog stories by a ratio near incalculable.

This leads to the most uncovered story. Throughout Israel where approximately one out of five citizens are Arabs there is no strife and Jews and Arabs including Muslims live side-by-side in peace and harmony. When I walk around Nahariya I often pass by Muslims dressed traditionally and there is no animosity and no acts to harm each other and we shop with merchants from both cultures giving the religious or race of the merchants little or no mind. Such events are the norm around almost all of Israel. Further, the buildings which are built, whenever there is not an actual announced building freeze or a stealth freeze where the tenders are given, bids made and recognized and every legal and administrative hurdle passed and completed, the final permission to start construction has been withheld by the political leadership of Israel very likely in response and due to pressures from European governments, the United States, the United Nations and the European Union. Had these apartments been constructed the reality which is ignored is that Arab Israelis including those living in and originating in East Jerusalem would be able to purchase and live in these buildings. There is no restricted housing for the most part throughout Israel. Yes, there exist Kibbutzim and religious neighborhoods where one need apply to live in these areas but that is due to the economic partnership members of these communities share when it comes to rents and other necessities as these communal neighborhoods also care for their less well-off within the structure of the neighborhood. These are just as often Jewish neighborhoods as they are Arab neighborhoods and within Israel there are completely Arab towns and a number of cities with Arab mayors which have mixed Arab and Jewish citizens. That these mixed neighborhoods live happily and in peace almost universally does not exactly make for exciting news, but they exist just the same. One must remember that the news covers the exceptions, the most drastic and outside of the ordinary as that defines news. News agencies which attempted to write ‘good news stories’ exclusively quickly failed to survive as nobody bought their products regularly because such stories are not that exciting. Who cares for the most part what the lady on the corner does to grow such nice petunias, where is the visceral gut wrenching real news, that sells newspapers and makes newscasts worth watching.

Finally we get to the shaky situation for the future which might be closer than many think. There have been some actions threatened to be taken by the Palestinian leadership which could signal something neither side desires but was the eventual outcome due to the indoctrinations and incitements which are integral in Palestinian society. These indoctrinations and instigations are woven into their textbooks, soaked throughout their media, stressed even in preschools, reinforced through social media and visual media such as television, radio, movies and other modes to the point of inundating the Palestinian population with a visceral and red hot hatred of Israel and the Jewish people. This indoctrination has reached such a fevered pitch and so soaked throughout the society that the violence it demands has very likely gotten beyond their ability to control and is now escalating independent of any controls or manipulation. The leadership began this latest Intifada as they had every time before to coincide with negotiations such that they might force Israeli concessions simply to make gains in the negotiations bringing them to a satisfactory end for the time being and the violence would be slowed and eventually a calm with a controllable level of violence would settle in. There does not appear to be an off switch or the usual one had malfunctioned and there is no way for the leadership of the Palestinian Authority to dampen down the riots and violence as they have taken on a life of their own. The daily rioting on the Temple Mount is no longer under Palestinian Authority control and is being financed and pushed by Hamas who desires instability in Judea and Samaria (West Bank) and throughout the Palestinian Authority regions as an inside line to toppling Mahmoud Abbas and the Fatah and PLO leadership replacing it with Hamas and Islamic Jihad, two terrorist groups which more and more appear to have merged, or at least cooperate to the point of being complimentary. With the rioting, rock attacks, fire bombings, assaults, attempted stabbings, and lately shooting between Arab neighborhoods and Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem; there appears to be a serious problem which the Palestinian Authority is losing control. This is all most likely the plan by Hamas to unseat the current leadership and also to coopt with the unity government thus completely replacing the Palestinian Authority with Hamas leaders. This was the plan revealed initially by the Israeli Intelligence, the Shin Bet, who, with IDF assistance, arrested the core leadership and organizers of a Hamas coup attempt near the end of August as the ceasefire was being negotiated. The order for the coup to be executed presumably came from Khaled Mashaal, Hamas political leader living in exile. Had the Israelis not prevented the coup the plan was for the violence in Judea and Samaria to escalate completely out of control and while Abbas and the Palestinian Authority leadership was attempting to get a handle on the violence for Hamas planted units to take control of the seats of power eliminating the current leadership of the Palestinian Authority and thus gain complete control over the unity government. This would have permitted Hamas to attack Israel from the advantageous Judean Hills which overlook the heart of Israel including the entirety of the Tel Aviv greater metropolitan area, Ben Gurion International Airport, and over seventy percent of Israeli production, population, infrastructure, power generation and utilities. Having Hamas fire rockets from the Judean Hills would paralyze Israel and be completely ruinous to the Israeli economic health. The only response which Israel could take would be a full-on military assault and reconquest of all of Judea and Samaria. After such, and with the entirety of the Palestinian Authority leadership replaced, there would not existing any authority which would present even the slightest willingness for sane coexistence and there would be no avenue for peace or even an end to the violence outside of eradication of the resistance no matter the amount of force required.

This exact scenario may be what we are witnessing being unveiled before our eyes and if this proves valid, then there is serious trouble brewing which will force a resolution to the Palestinian statehood question. This may be what is behind the Palestinian Authority decision to utilize their alter ego, the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization) which was the originating group from which the Palestinian Authority was eventually formed with a side step creating Fatah as the political side of the PLO, and submit a petition requesting a binding resolution from the Security Council at the United Nations to enforce Israeli surrender of the entirety of Judea and Samaria, they will refer to this as the West Bank in their petition, by the end of this October or by no later than November 2016. This may be being sought as a last ditch attempt to regain control over the forces rioting and going so far as to shoot into Jewish neighborhoods. Just for clarification, there has yet to be return fire from the Jewish neighborhoods and if such should occur, then the escalations would lead into that unthinkable area, a place where Hamas may be currently pushing everything. The coup plan may not have been completely prevented by the arrests of the leadership and may be being carried out by Hamas interests right now. Such a situation if proving to be beyond Palestinian Authority abilities to control then the Israeli retaking and imposing martial law in all of Judea and Samaria might prove to be the only alternative. The currently escalating confrontations do not provide for a sustainable situation for Israel and security and order would need to be restored by whatever means are required. If subduing the violence is not something that the Palestinian Security Force, the force trained by the United States by Lieutenant General Keith Dayton, then Israel would have little choice but to suppress the violence using the might of the IDF to whatever levels proved necessary. After such a resolution, the two state solution will have been killed, it currently is on life support and pulling the plug and letting it die has begun to be considered a viable option, and the alternate plan would be proposed and presented as the only solution other than Israeli rule. That alternative is for all defense and security for the Palestinian areas to be provided by Israel while internal policing may be performed by an autonomous Palestinian entity in their areas in Judea and Samaria, probably limited to Areas A and B while Area C would remain Israeli as was the initial plan at the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993, and the Palestinian could continue self-rule as they see fit but without arms on a level of a militarily viable force. This would be the best of all options should the Palestinians insist on imposing their own solution outside of negotiations and calling on outside forces to impose their demands on Israel. That would be tantamount to their declaring war, a war they could not win. This may be the end result should these escalations continue to their inevitable conclusion which would be Hamas gaining power over the entirety of the Palestinian semiautonomous areas both in Gaza as they have currently from which they attack Israel approximately every two years, and in Judea and Samaria where they could threaten much more of Israel with their rockets as from the Judean Hills their accuracy would be greatly improved and they could almost not miss as they would be launching into the most densely urban areas in all of Israel. As stated previously, such a situation would be taken as a declaration of war by whatever Palestinians were holding the positions of leadership, and such a war will only end one way.

The Israel I Learned in Bible Class in my Youth

Over the years we covered the stories in the Old Testament, also called the Jewish Bible, and were taught many stories about the ancient Hebrews and Israelites as they were known depending on which period of ancient Jewish history you are talking about. There were also the biblical figures whose nationality was left unstated or other than one of the ancient names used by the earliest Jews. One well known example being Noah who while being a believer and obedient follower of G0d was not Jewish as he predates Abraham who is the father of the Jewish religion. We were also taught that in many ways the real originator of Judaism as we know it today was Moses who is referred to as the law-giver as he gave the Jews the Ten Commandments and the Torah in which are contained the laws which Jews are to observe. What fascinated me were the stories of the Israelites once they had settled in the Promised Lands and their struggles and how they seemed to be constantly falling away from following their Commandments only to face hardships which often took the form of outside civilizations invading their lands and how when facing defeat or other hardships they would find their way back to following the path laid out for them by G0d through His Laws. As with any young boy, I was always most interested in their battles and the tactics and maneuvers they used to repel or defend against these invaders.

There was one feature of almost all of these battles which strikes me as being of paramount importance to modern times and the problems concerning Israel and the constant demands that they surrender lands to the Arabs, Bedouins, Palestinians or whomever. The one constant in these battles were the Judean Hills which the ancient Israelites used to great advantage as it seemed that everybody who invaded used chariots and heavily armored infantry while the Israelites utilized archers, slingers, and mostly light infantry. When your strength is mobility and speed and the other army uses brute force and heavy equipment, then you pick the worst terrain you can find in which to confront them. The other tactical weapon the ancient Israelites would use was to try fight holding the invaders off and not directly engaging them until the seasons of rain were upon the lands making chariots next to useless. Apparently their lands had a tendency to become swamp-like which made the use of even horses difficult and often defeated every advantage the invaders normally enjoyed.

Then there was the most famous stronghold, Jerusalem. Jerusalem was a great walled city that had the most wonderful secret that enabled it to hold out against sieges, a culvert that was dug, concealed underground, which brought fresh spring waters into the city supplying the one absolute necessity, water. This not only provided drinking water but water for all purposes and apparently Jerusalem had enormous stores of grains and foods kept by the Priests within the Temple complex. Jerusalem also had tunnels that allowed raids to be loosed on any siege force which would come seemingly out of nowhere, strike, and disappear almost as fast as they had appeared never leaving any traceable signs. It is little wonder that Jerusalem was not conquered as frequently as most other cities. Add to the mystique that is the history of Jerusalem the fascinating tale of how King David as a warrior led a small band into the city by the very channel which supplied water to conquer the prize that became the eternal Capital City for the Jewish People from that day forward. Jerusalem was far more than just the Capital City and fortress of last resort, Jerusalem was the cultural and religious center of the Israelites. It was the central hub that wed the twelve tribes into one peoples. This was where three times every year every Jew would make their pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the three Jewish pilgrimage holidays, Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot. Much of Jewish life, customs, and religious observance in the ancient times revolved around the Temple in Jerusalem. There are many of the six-hundred-thirteen commandments which are at the core of Jewish belief which pertain solely to the Temple and the rituals which must be carried out in the holy place. Some pertain to daily, weekly, or monthly observances and others to particular services attached to certain holidays. Until the Jews are permitted to erect the Third Temple these commandments go unfulfilled.

There is one story which I found particularly unusual and it has to do with the initial conquest of the lands from the Canaanites at the beginning of Israelite history after the Exodus from slavery in ancient Egypt, and it pertains to right before they received their last instructions from Moses, as he would not cross the Jordan with them, and before Joshua as Moses’s successor led them against the walled fortress of Jericho. Two of the Tribes of Israelites, Dan and Rueben, who were made up of herders found the lands east of the Jordan River to be favorable for grazing their herds and approached Moses with a request to settle these lands. Moses was less than receptive to their request and admonished them for attempting to forgo their obligation to conquer the lands as commanded and instead leave all of the warfare to the other tribes to go alone. They replied that not only would they assist with the conquering of the Promised Lands but that they would take the lead in every battle and not take up their flocks until every tribe had received their lands. They asked only that they be allowed to build pens to hold their flocks and a defendable city to hold their women and children in safety. This too enraged Moses who reprimanded them for their placing the safety and security of their flocks ahead of that of their women and children. After Moses had sufficiently cowed them he allowed for them to proceed and reminded them of their promise and had them restate their intent to make honest on their promise to the other tribes.

What does all of this have to do with modern times? Well, the Israelites of today have not requested to have those lands the tribes of Dan and Rueben settled east of the Jordan River despite these lands being well described in the historical record of the early Jewish tribes, the Bible. The debate the world has forced upon the Jews is for them to sacrifice some of the lands where much of their most important events throughout their history took place. The world is demanding that the Jews surrender half of the city which has been at the heart of their world for over three-thousand years. The Jewish tribes had a civilization centered around Jerusalem before either Confucius or Buddha was preaching their philosophies and religious beliefs. There are demands that Israel allow the descendants of the Arabs who were displaced largely due to their own fleeing the oncoming warfare under the promise given them by the Mufti of Jerusalem that once the Jews had been eradicated they would be allowed to take from the spoils and have possession of all the land. Something of a miracle came to pass and Israel survived and even could be said to have thrived. Despite the constant claims for these Arab refugees who have been imprisoned by their brethren, nobody has bothered to demand restitution or the return to their lands of the over three-quarters of a million Jews who were forced through persecutions to flee much of the Arab and Muslim world after the formation of Israel. The majority of these Jews made what could be called a second exodus to Israel where they were welcomed and absorbed into the society and not placed in squalid camps for the next sixty-five plus years. What was nothing more than an exchange of populations similar to numerous other such exchanges that have taken place through recent history, this one is treated as something different, something other than ordinary. Nobody is demanding that restitution be made or a return forced for the Hindus and Buddhists who migrated in one direction and the Muslims who migrated in the other direction when India and Pakistan became separate entities. Similar comparisons can be made with the lands that were taken from Germany after the World War and presented to France and Poland. Furthermore, when after the War of Israeli Independence when Jordan claimed the areas of Judea and Samaria and renamed them the West Bank and made the Jews depart from lands they owned and gave the Arabs citizenship and divided the Jewish lands presenting them to those who were owed favor, the entire world including the Arab and Muslim nations with the exception of Britain and Pakistan refused to recognize the Jordanian claims. Here is a question, who exactly did the world believe that land belonged to that they refused to recognize the Jordanian annexation? There were no such peoples invented as of yet called Palestinians as when people referred to Palestinians at that time and before 1948 they meant the Jews living under the British rule. The British even had a Palestine Brigade fighting in the Sinai and North Africa during World War II which was made up entirely of Jews from the British Mandate Lands. There were no Arabs as they mostly fought on the side of the German Nazis during World War II and hated the British. So, the lands that the Jordanians called the West Bank and the rest of history called Judea and Samaria should belong to whoever was believed to have been the rightful owners while the world condemned and refused to recognize Jordanian ownership. A small hint, they believed it rightfully belonged to Israel, surprise.
