The Forgotten Front in Terror War

The forgotten front in the terror war would mean to eradicate yet another group claiming ties to the Islamic State, the same entity of which President Trump promised to rid the world. Of course President Trump meant and everyone understood that this meant from Iraq and Syria, there one so-called rebirth of the Caliphate. He did not mean to also eradicate the Islamic State everywhere some group claimed to be part of the Islamic State. That means the presumed rebirth of the branch originally started by al-Baghdadi in the Sinai Peninsula, let alone the forgotten front which spread across much of Africa in what is termed the Transition Zone. The most likely area which the Islamic State claims to be operating from has shifted to the Sinai Peninsula between Egypt and Israel (see map below). The Islamic State operates at times with the assistance of the Hamas terror rulers of the Gaza who are capable of arming and training members of the Islamic State as Hamas operates in the Sinai Peninsula in order to broaden their border for attacking Israel. Hamas has also cooperated with the Islamic State a few months back in launching rockets into the Israel southern port city of Eilat at the southernmost tip of Israel. Thusfar, the Islamic State has not taken any direct credit for attacks on Israel always allowing Hamas to claim credit. It was the Islamic State which took credit for the planning of an explosive device which downed a Russian air carrier’s Jet this past summer. The flight originated in Sharm el-Sheik and was destined to return to Russia when it crashed into the Sinai Peninsula after the bomb was detonated. The most recent development was Egypt granting Israel permission to overfly the Sinai Peninsula to make airstrikes on the Islamic State. The fact that Egypt sought Israeli assistance in their fight with the Islamic State has not as of yet shown any actual warming of relations, but this was still a step towards perhaps some form of détente which could only benefit relations between these neighboring countries. This may have been something which we will eventually be informed that the hands of President Trump had some amount of massaging. It is very possible that Egypt sought the assistance of the United States and President Trump advised Egyptian President Sisi that he had a very capable neighbor who could assist at a similar level of capabilities as could the United States and perhaps he might seek Israeli assistance and give Prime Minister Netanyahu a call. President Trump has implied heavily that he would prefer for the problems in the Middle East be addressed and solved by the nations of the Middle East. He probably talked with the leaders of the MENA area and likely told them that they need to cooperate more with Israel even if such cooperation were not done openly initially. President Trump has made it clear he desires the Sunni Arab States normalize relations with Israel as a leading step in solving many of the area’s difficulties. Cooperation between Egypt and Israel against the Islamic State and Hamas as well as the other terrorist entitles operating in the Sinai Peninsula and Gaza, as these are a threat to both nations’ stability, and at least their peace of mind. This cooperation in conducting air strikes could be the first step.

Sinai Peninsula

Sinai Peninsula

Islamic State in the Sinai Peninsula and Hamas in Gaza are not the forgotten front in the war against the Islamic State. Perhaps it has slipped everyone’s mind that Boko Haram pledged their loyalty to the Islamic State when it was known as ISIS believing them to be the rising star of Islamic superiority. Despite their failure in Iraq and Syria, Boko Haram has continued to operate spreading terror across Nigeria and many of the neighboring nations including Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo, Ghana and beyond (see map below). Some of the reason the world has not intervened more is these nations are just as suspicious of European and American assistance as they are threatened by Boko Haram part of the Islamic State. These nations are very aware of their recent history in the past with European colonialism and fear inviting any return of the Europeans as they fear that doing so would give these nations the opportunity to interfere with more than the assist with the terrorists and they know that already the European industry, and to a lesser extent the Americans as well, grabbing up much of the African raw material wealth such as iron and other ores, coal, oil, lumber and other even more rare and precious materials such as diamonds and other gems and the rare metals such as gold, platinum and silver. These nations though still developing are aware that they will have just as much if not greater need of these raw materials and thus cannot just allow Europe to mine them dry. These suspicions are well founded but also ignore a greater threat, resurgent Islam.

What much of the world has chosen to ignore or may actually be blind and unaware that the one of the greatest colonialist empires of all history second in size only to the Mongol Empire at its height is the Arab-Islamic Empire which reaches from the Atlantic coast of Africa to the Philippine Island of Mindanao in the Pacific. As we have covered repeatedly, the Arab-Islamic conquest came out from the Arabian Peninsula and spread rapidly as the other empires were all in their declining years and collapsing thus leaving a great area of weakness. The Arabs first spread across the entirety of the Arabian Peninsula where they cleansed these lands of its large and prosperous Jewish and Christian merchants, traders, caravan drivers and tradesmen through conversion, exile or death and gave the idolaters the choice of conversion or death thus the vast majority converted, at least outwardly. The next expansion of the Caliphate conquered the last vestiges of the Persian Empire, the Levant which included the Israelite homelands which had the main body of Jewish populations and much of the Hebrew heritage including the permanent capital of the Hebrews, the Jews, Jerusalem plus the center of the religious history in such areas as Hevron, Tiberius, Caesarea, Nazareth, Shechem, Bethlehem, Jericho and Beersheva. This expansion also pushed back the Byzantine Empire to the walls of Constantinople as well as taking Egypt and along the southern Mediterranean Coast. The final expansion reached the outskirts of Tours where The Hammer Martel defeated the Islamic forces ending that advance and the Islamic advanced into India where that conquest dragged to a halt.

Islamic Conquests Under the Caliphs

Islamic Conquests Under the Caliphs

Islam had been adopted though altered slightly when taking root in the southern Philippines and in Indonesia and other areas in the Far East. The further expansion of Islam was performed under the rule of the Ottoman Empire which, though greatly contracted, lasted until World War I where they joined Germany and the Austria-Hungarian Empire which lost to the Allied Powers of Britain, France, Italy, Japan and near the end, the United States. This led to the Sykes Picot Agreement, the Mandate System which allowed for the formation of the Jewish Homelands, and the dividing of the rest of the MENA nations by the European powers. The European colonial rule lasted less than a century making it all but irrelevant when compared to the Arab-Islamic and Ottoman-Islamic rule which lasted from approximately 650 until the end of World War I in 1915, which is more than a twelve-hundred-fifty years Islamic rule. Additionally, since the European powers left and even under their rule, the area remained under the influence of Islamic faith. The Islamic ruled world still reaches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Philippine Islands (see map below). Islam is still expanding with some claiming it is in another period of conquest and the main area they claim is under siege is Europe as the Syrian and other refugees pour into Europe arriving by boat and land as they make their way from North Africa, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and as far as Eritrea and Somalia. What will be the end result of the Islamic advances into Europe is something which will require watching, but still we need speak of the forgotten terror war and Islamic State.

The Islamic State branch called Boko Haram is a threat to the larger western parts of the African Transition Zone (see map below) and has been active for the past three decades if not longer. The war of terror is waged between the northern area under Islam attempting to spread southward and convert or replace the Christians and Animists residing along this belt. France was involved assisting areas which were once French colonies and still have a sizeable French population. The United States has provided Special Forces to assist with training and tactics in Niger and Nigeria. The United States worked largely with the African Army, a group made up of forces from numerous central and southern African nations. These troops are a fine example of nations uniting for their mutual defense and that is the greatest example of mutual assistance we can see today. The problem is that Islam utilizes a tactic which makes defense expensive and eventually Islam will expand until the world either surrenders to Islam or unites to stop their encroachment. Part of the reason for this is the belief that once land has been touched by Islam, then it becomes Islamic permanently and must never be permitted to fall into the hands of others to rule. This is part of what is behind the Islamic refusal to recognize Israel and allow the Jews their ancestral homelands and why in many Islamic texts and maps that Spain is referred to as Andalusia and is claimed to be an Islamic country. The ruler in Spain since 1692 and the reconquest of Spain by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella who also implemented the Spanish Inquisition to cleanse Spain and return it to Catholicism. Still Islam claims that one day Spain will return to their rule.

African Transition Zone

African Transition Zone

The Boko Haram kidnapping of young women and turning them into sex slaves or forced marriages and forced conversion is something which should enrage every free person of the world. The idea that just because this is happening in Africa thus that makes it of less importance is as nefarious an idea as we can find. The people under this threat deserve the complete and total assistance just as much as anywhere else on the planet. The way we treat the least amongst us is how we are to be judged. The spread of Islam is occurring on at least four continents if not across the entirety of the globe at some stage. Central Africa in this Transition Zone is one of the major regions under assault; Europe is another with the influx of Islamic refugees who are surprisingly largely male adults of military age without women or children. The intent is probably to marry and then convert women which will permit the children to be Muslim and prevents these women from marrying a Christian or human secularist and having non-Muslim children. There has also been a definitive increase in violent terrorism largely of Islamic origins. Islam is also pressing into Central Asia though this is a far quitter front. Lastly, Islam is working to make inroads into the United States through the public education systems, the colleges and through the politics as they infiltrate the power structures of the Democrat Party largely and attempting some infiltration of the Republicans as well. So that means that Islam is working to some extent in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and has a large area of control in South America in the Tri-Border Area (see below). About all that leaves are the Island continent of Australia and Antarctica free of Islamic pressures, for now.

One can only wonder what it is going to take for the world to fully realize that it is under assault and has been since 622 when Islam first set out to conquer the world. Then the world was smaller but the more they conquered, the larger the quest became as more and more of the world was revealed. Islam will never stop of its own volition; it will take outside pressures to make it modify its activities. Islam must conquer the world because the Quran dictates that the entirety of the population of Earth must surrender to Allah and follow his laws under Islam and there can be no other religion. That includes Atheists as a religion and secular humanists are considered idolaters and thus to be converted. There is no means around their belief in what Allah demands of them, complete surrender of their will, accept their predetermined lives and conquer the world for Allah. The rest is simple, do exactly as the Imams instruct and Allah will reward you, do not surrender to Allah, then you will be amongst the damned. The Quran claims to be the last and final world from Allah. Muhammad claimed to be the final Prophet and his revelations were to replace all which had come before replacing Christianity and Judaism with Islam and Muhammad was to be the last reformer and after him there would be nothing more. This is the premise in the Quran and it is to be accepted by all on Earth or they are to be put to the sword. One can have no other faith but Islam as long as Islam continues on its current definitions and the rule of Abrogation which places the violent teaching of Medina as the preeminent teaching and the teachings of Mecca which run counter are abrogated and nullified. That means the peaceful parts of the Quran have been replaced. The difficulty is the Quran is arranged for memorization with the shortest verses in the front and the longest verses at the end. It is not in chronological order or any other arrangement which makes sense other than for memorization starting in one’s youth. This is why the words of the Imam in their teaching are so important, change what they teach and Islam is altered. That is the challenge for Islam, the challenge for the remainder of the world is to force such an alteration in their Imams teaching or otherwise force Islam to live peaceably with the rest of the world’s religions.

Weeds in the MENA Garden

If one were to ask the European Union, the United States, the United Nations and the world media who is responsible for the unrest throughout the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) the resounding echoes would continue to scream Israel for likely the rest of eternity, but is that an honest assessment or simply a knee jerk automatic programed response spurred by anti-Israel, anti-Zionist, anti-Semitic hatreds? The easiest way to tell would be to take a quick whirl around the MENA nations and see what the truth is. Let us start our excursion at the western edge and head to the east and see what we will see.

A map of MENA nations is almost up to date and is only missing the Sudan, and as the Sudan was split after years of tribal and religious violence, South Sudan; and some go so far as to include Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Djibouti, Eretria, and Somalia.

A map of MENA nations is almost up to date and is only missing the Sudan, and as the Sudan was split after years of tribal and religious violence, South Sudan; and some go so far as to include Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Djibouti, Eretria, and Somalia.

Coming into the North of Africa from the Atlantic Ocean the first country we would visit would be Western Sahara where we would find Morocco has occupied Western Sahara since 1975 in violation of resolutions by the United Nations Security Council and International Court of Justice ruling. Any efforts to dislodge Morocco from Western Sahara have been blocked directly by the United States whose full support of the Moroccan occupation shows no sign of relenting. The conflict reemerged as the “Independence Intifada” in 2005 which has remained as depicted in map below. Despite numerous efforts to defuse the situation the standoff remains.

Continuing on from the Morocco-Western Sahara conflict we next visit Mauritania which has had a rocky recent history including two military coups, the first was in 2005 followed eventually by elections for a new president in 2007 followed by the second coup in 2008. General Abdul Aziz took power after the coup but found the nation had few supporters amongst them predominantly were Morocco, Libya and Iran while the United States and European nations rejected the legitimacy of the coup continuing to refer to Abdallahi as the legitimate president of Mauritania. After the resignation of Abdallahi there were elections which allowed Abdel Aziz to become the civilian president. In February 2011 there were waves of unrest as the Arab Spring spread to Mauritania demanding President Mohamed Abdel Aziz institute political, economic, and legal reforms. The unrest culminated in April of 2012 as thousands of people in Mauritania attended demonstrations in the capital calling for President Mohamed Abdel Aziz to resign. Currently the nation is under military rule with the legal system based on Islam and Sharia.

Heading across the southern end the picture in Mali, Niger and Chad is the constant internal strife between Christian governments and Islamic uprisings with much of the major horrific attacks conducted by the terrorist group Boko Haram which literally means Western education is forbidden. Boko Haram follows Saudi Wahhabism and has pledged their loyalty to the Islamic State. Along the north there has been steady unrest in Algeria and especially Libya since the NATO backed coup where President Obama declared that the United States was leading from behind in the ouster of and eventual execution (murder) of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. In Libya the nation is in fractious rule of numerous terror groups and tribal armies with some having declared alliance with the Islamic State. In the south east there is the Sudan which bled in the south especially in the Darfur area. Eventually the Sudan was force to divide allowing South Sudan to become independent. In October of 2015, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir issued a decree establishing twenty-eight states in place of the ten constitutionally established states. The decree established the new states largely along ethnic lines. He took it to the parliament for approval as a constitutional amendment in November and the South Sudanese parliament empowered President Kiir to create new states.

This brings us to Egypt where the recent history has played out live and large in the Western media. The Arab Spring riots led to the removal of President and military strongman Mubarak. The elections were held fairly soon after Mubarak was forced to step down largely by the United States backing of the Muslim Brotherhood. These elections overwhelmingly approved Muslim Brotherhood candidate Morsi to the presidency and a large Muslim Brotherhood majority in the parliament. Within the year new rioting broke out protesting the implementation of Sharia despite warnings from Turkish President Erdogan to the Morsi government to slow their radical changes or face resistance. This led to the military removing Morsi and arresting him for election fraud. New election instated former General of the Army Sisi as President though he still had an Islamist and presumed Muslim Brotherhood controlled parliament. The Obama administration refused to recognize Sisi and demanded that Morsi be reinstated; a request which was roundly ignored. Unrest still exists between Egypt and the United States which will be resolved by the Presidential election this November in the United States. As to what either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump might choose to do is a complete mystery at the present time as neither has addressed foreign policy beyond Hillary’s claim to deep knowledge claiming her time as a Senator of New York and a stint as Secretary of State under President Obama which included the Benghazi, Libya fiasco amongst other miscues and Trump claiming to have conducted business deals with numerous foreign governments and met many world leaders though particulars remain largely unconfirmed. Egypt has also faced unrest largely from the Muslim Brotherhood and the Islamic State where both are vying for control of the Sinai from where they would presumably unseat Sisi and retake the presidency. Hamas in Gaza was seen as providing assistance to these and some Iranian backed groups in the Sinai thus earning themselves a complete sea and land embargo enforced by Egypt from their waters and land borders with Gaza. The Egyptian blockade is often ignored with the large amount of attention paid to the Israeli “blockade” which is actually an inspection of goods before allowing their delivery to Gaza usually within one or two days done to assure that weapons are not being imported by Hamas and the other terror groups which rule Gaza. Egypt too is a work in progress.

We will return to Israel subsequently but meanwhile on to Lebanon where the terror groups Hezballah runs the government with an opposition often afraid to act to remove the terror group as previous attempts have resulted in untimely deaths. Lebanon cannot be addressed without discussing Syria and the state of war which has more facets than hewn crystals. The main three forces are Syrian dictator Bashir al Assad who has retreated to the Alawite tribal areas along the Mediterranean coast and Lebanese border. Assad is backed by Iran and their proxy, Hezballah, out of Lebanon. These are the Shiite forces which also receive tactical support largely in the form of air strikes by the Russians who are protecting their port area along the Mediterranean coast. Inland there are Sunni groups, oft referred to as terror groups, supported largely by Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Finally there are the forces of the Islamic State which stretch into Iraq where they face the Iraqi Army backed by Iran who uses mostly IRGC (Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps) placing Iran at either end of the Islamic State. The Islamic State has been largely self-financed though there have been rumored support from Qatar. There is another group in northern Iraq and extending into northeastern Syria which is controlled by Kurdish Militias which are opposed strongly by Turkey. The Kurdish forces were at one time rumored to be receiving training by Israeli trainers on a clandestine mission though many have refuted that this was just a means of explaining the Kurdish forces resilience and holding their own against Islamist forces considered to be better equipped.

This takes us to the Saudi Peninsula and Jordan which we can count as a single unit of the GCC (Gulf Coordination Council) which is a group backed mostly by Saudi Arabia which includes Kuwait and the Gulf States and to a lesser extent, Jordan. Saudi Arabia has a close working relationship with the Egyptian government of President Sisi who are jointly facing terror groups including those supported or aligned with Islamic State as well as Iranian backed terrorists and the Houthi Tribes in the Yemen civil war, a front where Iran backed and Saudi Arabian backed forces are in direct confrontation. The United States has opposed and presumably attempted to prevent, though with little success, arms shipments to the Houthis by Iran and also opposed the bombing sorties from Saudi Arabia with equal lack of success and the belligerents continue to fight on. In the southernmost areas of Yemen, the prized areas which overlook the narrow passage from the Red Sea into the Arabian Sea, called Bab el-Mandeb Strait are a group of fighters originally claiming alliance with al-Qaeda but recently changing their alliance to presumably the Islamic State. These groups have benefited directly from Saudi raids as has the currently recognized Hadi-led government.

Yemen Battle Map

Yemen Battle Map

Lastly let us finally look at Israel. On the Golan Heights IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) have returned fire when fired upon by intention and otherwise has unofficial drop points for wounded individuals, civilian and combatant though no difference is noted, wounded and in need of treatment. IDF soldiers take these wounded and treat them in their field facility with the more serious cases transferred to Israeli hospitals for treatment. After treatment the individuals once sufficiently recovered are returned from whence they came at same drop points. All sides can view the individual drop points and all points are respected by other fighting factions in an unarranged agreement as all sides use this treatment method and no one side wishes to risk being cut-off from Israeli treatment and have to rely on whatever resources they have available. We have no information as to whether any Iranian forces have received treatment from the Israelis though if placed in civilian clothing they would receive the same treatment as any other individual. The Israeli border with Lebanon is currently quiet as Hezballah has sufficient on their plate with forces in the Syrian conflict and rumored even to have some fighting with IRGC or Houthis in Yemen. Intelligence believed to be accurate estimated that Hezballah has stores of rockets of varying size and capable of striking Tel Aviv, Bathsheva and even Ashkelon as well as guided missiles from Iran capable of striking anywhere in Israel including the southernmost port city of Eilat carrying warhead as large as two kilos and potentially five or ten up to one-hundred kilos warheads on their short and medium ranged rockets of which they possess as many as one-hundred-seventy-five-thousand. On their larger missiles they have warheads of as much as seven-hundred-fifty kilos on modified Zilzal-2 with a four-hundred km range and which they possess an estimated one thousand. Their Fateh-110 missile has a range three-hundred km range striking at Mach 3.5 carrying a four to seven-hundred kg warhead of which Hezballah possess more than twenty-thousand and lastly there is the Shaheen-II two stage missile which has a range of two-thousand km making able to strike anywhere in Israel and into Egypt. Each missile is capable of flight altitude of up to three-hundred km, is GPS guided, and varies a one-thousand plus kg warhead making it potentially capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and retaining it guidance hardware. It is doubtful that Iran has, let alone provided Hezballah with a deliverable nuclear warhead. Such is not far from the horizon for Iran but their providing Hezballah with such a weapon is doubtful.

The remaining fronts for Israel are with Jordan and Egypt which are both peaceful and with the Palestinian Authority (PA) in Judea and Samaria as well as with Hamas and ally Islamic Jihad and other terror and criminal groups in Gaza. The front with the PA is largely one where there are terror strikes which can be planned by Abbas and the his PLO terror groups or the less planned but instigated through calls for violence from PA figures, PLO figures or any of a litany of groups most of which are either headed by Mahmoud Abbas or are willful practitioners at his beck and call. The most recent round were stabbings carried out largely by Palestinian Arab and some Israeli Arab youths as well as car rammings along with rock and Molotov cocktail throwing with rioting which are carried out routinely by PA controlled terror groups, the Tamini family instigators who work closely with European Union and other European NGOs whose main aims are to cause any violent response by Israel which is filmed and the instigation causing the defensive act is edited and with careful editing and juxtaposition of stock footage, prerecorded footage or actual footage with any questionable instigations by the Arabs edited over or out completely compiled into the final product which is then transmitted throughout European news agencies within a matter of a couple of hours and they run with it unedited as if it were an actual news story followed by their governments and the European union then condemning Israel for use of disproportional force or the commission of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The Gaza front is another area where Iran attempts with some success to smuggle arms mostly containing rocket motors and rocket parts and technology. Funding for Hamas comes from UNRWA as well as from the PA making the European Union, United States, United Nations and individual European nations as well as numerous Arab countries direct or indirect financiers of Hamas terrorism and rocket attacks as well as Arab instigations and propaganda which permeates their entire society from their media to the schools, summer camps soccer leagues and every aspect of childhood and raising the children to hate Jews as well as Israel. The Hamas Charter calls not only for the annihilation of Israel but of Jews worldwide. Similar language is found in Islamic Jihad and Hezballah pamphlets and charters or constitutions. The hatred goes well beyond Israel and includes Jews everywhere as well as Western culture and societies. Hamas and their allies as well as Hezballah desire a world caliphate under Sharia and openly claim so. The main difference is whether the caliphate would be Shiite or Sunni, for the rest of us that is a minor comfort.

Obama Initiates Countdown to Horrific Afghanistan Civil War

President Obama stated in his recent State of the Union Address, “When I took office, nearly 180,000 Americans were serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, all our troops are out of Iraq. More than sixty-thousands of our troops have already come home from Afghanistan. With Afghan forces now in the lead for their own security, our troops have moved to a support role. Together with our allies, we will complete our mission there by the end of this year, and America’s longest war will finally be over.” The statement ignores the reality that though the participation of American and allied troops will have ended, the war in Iraq continues to escalate and the war in Afghanistan is heating up simply waiting for the Americans to completely depart from operations to begin a full blown civil war to decide who will take control in Afghanistan. Taking the open civil war engulfing Iraq first, one needs to realize that the Sunni center of the nation has fallen to al-Qaeda with their central power being in the Anbar Province and Fallujah, some of the names that represent some of the hardest won victories for the American troops during the Iraq War. The fact that all of the gains won by the sacrifice and dedication of the United States military troops and with the equally praiseworthy sacrifice given by their families have been squandered needlessly and without a second thought by the Administration of President Obama is enough to make any patriot ill. The truth behind this story is indicative of the entirety of President Obama’s lack of concern or attention of all things foreign policy.

The only requirement that fell at President Obama’s feet was to negotiate a continuance for a reserve force to remain in what is referred to as a Status of Forces Agreement. With such an agreement there would have been a contingency of American forces remaining in country with one mission, to assure that the hard won victories and the hard work putting Iraq on the road to becoming a functioning democratically based nation where the differences between people and groups are worked out peaceably through debate and political measures. Instead, without any American presence, the Iraqis returned to their historic measures of solving differences, the use of force and violence. The Shiites took control of the government after arresting or chasing off the Sunni members in the government which ignited the beginning of a civil war and the return of al-Qaeda to Iraq. The violence has been steadily building and Iraq threatens to become simply another front in the Shiite-Sunni civil war in neighboring Syria. The two sides will be backed by the same outside forces with Iran and the IRGC allied with the Shiites and al-Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood in support of the Sunnis. This is exactly the same situation faced by the Iraqi people under Saddam Hussein with the tables turned with the Shiites now in control of the government suppressing the Sunni minority which were the oppressive government under Saddam Hussein victimizing the non-Sunni population.

There is one gain, one victory, made by the investment made with the blood, sweat and tears of the American efforts in Iraq which owes nothing to President Obama. This victory is in the northern providences of Iraq. These areas are under Kurdish autonomous rule who also formed their own military and took control of their own destiny. The Kurds probably faced the worst under Saddam Hussein and took responsibility for their own security and only participated in the government in a spirit of Iraqi unity. Now that the government no longer honors that unity, the Kurds have simply closed their southern border with the rest of the nation and created a virtual Kurdistan though they have yet to attempt to establish an independent nation. The world should now fulfill a promise made to the Kurdish people after the fall of the Ottoman Empire after World War I and allow the establishment of Kurdistan. The British reneged on their promise to the Kurds in order to incorporate the northern oil fields in a greater Iraq in order to obtain the rights for Getty Oil. The time has come to correct that wrong and finally make good on the promise to an ancient people and give them back their homeland and their culture.

In Afghanistan the story parallels Iraq as Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai is currently refusing to sign a Status of Forces Agreement demanding that President Obama take whatever steps are required to assure his reelection as President before signing the agreement. This difficulty has come to be simply because President Karzai does not fear or respect United States President Obama. The loss of trust between the two men began when President Obama began to conduct negotiations with the Taliban attempting to arrange some sharing of power agreement behind President Karzai’s back. This resulted in President Karzai returning the favor and conducting his own secretive negotiations with the Taliban. Meanwhile, the Taliban figured out that there was trouble in Afghanistan’s future and that would enable them to return to power if they simply out waited the United States and swept in once the last American troops had gone home. So the Taliban broke off negotiations with the United States and strung along President Karzai and are apparently biding their time before turning Afghanistan into the next Iraq or Syria. There have already been signs of increasing violence in Afghanistan and it will likely only grow worse with time. Afghanistan has been a nation of often warring tribes since before Alexander the Great rode in and forced a peace by marrying off the daughters of a number of his generals to the many tribes and then forcing them to keep the others under control. This was Alexander’s attempt to untie the Gordian Knott, by cleaving it in half with a sword, not exactly tactful. Afghanistan can be expected to return to tumultuous violence soon after the last American and allied troop departs and there does not appear to be much that President Obama is going to do to alter the situation. As the Americans continue to return home, or be sent to Africa as some Afghanistan veterans have been diverted, the clock will slowly tick towards a civil war in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, it appears that the slow and inexorable buildup will be starting across Africa with United States forces being deployed to Mali and thirty-four other African nations to train and prepare the indigenous military forces who are possibly facing potential violence. Gen. David Rodriguez, the head of U.S. Army Forces Command told the AP “If they want them for (military) operations, the brigade is our first sourcing solution because they’re prepared. But that has to go back to the secretary of defense to get an execute order.” Other troops will be heading to Libya, Sudan, Algeria, Kenya and Niger in order to prepare for advances from al-Qaeda linked forces. Additionally and ominously, American forces will be returning to Somalia, reportedly, in order to stand up to al-Shabab terrorist militants. Perhaps President Obama is on the leading edge of placing American troops in another conflict, this time across most of Africa enveloping much of the continent and not simply a nation or two as President George W. Bush accomplished. I wonder when these troop assignments will enter the regular news cycle or will the American public wake up one morning to reports of a conflict with across the African continent with total American involvement in over thirty nations. All this from the President who declared al-Qaeda on the run, finished as a force needing to be contained and the war on terror won and completed. Somebody may need to tell the Defense Department that the War on Terror is over so they can stop fighting it, or tell the American people the truth for once, pick one.
