Hamas and UNRWA Continue Their Dancing for the Media

Hamas and UNRWA Continue Their Dancing for the Media

How does an international agency under the auspices of the United Nations continue to appear to meet the requirements of universal acceptance and avoiding giving support to terrorism as well as avoiding support of racial and religious hatred and still serve and be deemed acceptable in Hamas ruled Gaza. This question becomes even more critical when the services involved have to do with the education of the youth in United Nations funded and run schools and supplying the textbooks for that very same school system. This has been the dilemma which the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has faced ever since their Gaza run schools fell under the supervision of Hamas governance which demanded that the schools follow a curriculum approved by the terror group demanding that the UNRWA schools meet their standards. This should have created a crisis for UNRWA as they were now being forced to meet two contradictory dictates, one from the Hamas rulers in Gaza and the other from the United Nations and their primary financial backers of governments in Europe and the United States. What is an upright United Nations agency to do as if they no longer were permitted to provide schools educating the children of Gaza, a large portion of their overly generous budget would instantly dry up; but if they bowed before the demands placed on them by the United Nations, the United States and the Europeans as Hamas enforcers would drive them from Gaza or possibly murder them depending on the orientation of the stars and their mood that day.

Fortunately, Hamas, if nothing else, was willing to be accommodating and an arrangement was hammered out between UNRWA and the Hamas ruling body. The UNRWA schools would teach a Hamas approved agenda and only use textbooks approved by Hamas while Hamas would react with great noise and fury denouncing those very same textbooks as being too liberal and teaching dangerous thoughts including lessons about the Holocaust and other items which were not sufficiently critical of the Jews and the Israelis. This song and dance was perpetrated before the media, and the minders Hamas provides those press agents reporting from Gaza made sure that the correct story line denouncing the UNRWA textbooks and lesson plans was reported far and wide in every conceivable news publication and newspaper in the West. This was the course once again these past few weeks as Hamas spokespersons and UNRWA representatives once again spoke to the press repeating their annual repertoire replete with intricate dance steps mutually expressing indignation spouting denouncements and taking equal offense of one for the other and back again and the press has dutifully reported the entire production nearly verbatim. Hamas has denounced the textbooks as being too liberal and progressive and UNRWA has denounced any pressures refusing to adjust their school plans to suit their critics from Hamas. With their parts played once more to near perfection with the normal close participation as per usual from the press the UNRWA schools will continue to teach their Hamas approved lessons instilling the Hamas approved curriculum to their impressionable charges producing the next generation to feed the Hamas ranks with properly oriented little haters ready to continue the struggle against the Zionist entity. And with the press reports in hand the Europeans and United States governments can continue to finance the UNRWA schools and provide the funds to print the textbooks and everything can continue business as usual.

Examples of this year’s repertoire include, “We denounce the publication and distribution of syllabus in UNRWA-run schools without the approval of the ministry of education and higher education,” the Hamas ministry said in a released statement. The statement added that such curricula “do not fit the culture of our Palestinian society, and its meant to brainwash Palestinian students and convince them to accept the Zionist enemies while they continue to kill our people, carry out more oppressive procedures, Judaize the holy city (Jerusalem) and build the apartheid wall.” Meanwhile, UNRWA spokesman denied the accusations and told Ma’an that the agency “would never adopt curricula that violate customs and traditions of the Palestinian people.” They were also quoted claiming, “There is nothing in the curricula that violates the Palestinian people’s traditions and customs.”

On another front, UNRWA had not shared these texts with the United States, Norwegian, Canadian and Israeli governments. Please also read this report titled, DAGEN Newspaper in Norway Has Commissioned an Evaluation of New “Human Rights Curriculum” Published by UNRWA. This relatively short but information intense article chronicles the findings of an investigation into UNRWA Gaza schools which was commissioned by DAGAN Norwegian news agency.

What Lessons Resulted from United Nations Palestinian Statehood Vote?

The World did not learn anything from this vote, it simply confirmed once more that the Jew is still vilified and any charge or claim made against Jews, no matter how offensive, ridiculous, unfounded, or insanely ludicrous it may be, it will generally be accepted as fact without any request or investigation into the facts. In a World body consisting of one-hundred-ninety-three countries, a sole nine countries supported Israel and by doing so reaffirmed United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181 which was passed by a slim majority exactly sixty-five years earlier to the day. The World taught the lesson that had the Jewish people sought their ancient homeland, as affirmed in the Five Books of Moses, better known as Torah, the Christian bible and even in the Koran, in these modern times they would be refused and told by the world that their nearly two-thousand year exile had not yet come to a close. The vote revealed that no longer does the World recognize the rights of the Jewish people to their homeland. There will be those who protest that this vote did not erase the Jewish Homeland but they would be taking a limited and blinkered view of the ramifications of this vote. The only long term result that could result from this vote, which if enforced would allow heavy weapons and rockets to be rained onto the remainder of Israel which thus far had been beyond the range of Hamas and Hezballah, would be the end of normalcy and eventually even existence throughout the lands of Israel.

Israel got a good view of which countries she may rely and call friend. This select group of countries consists of the United States, Canada, Panama, the Czech Republic, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, and Palau. There are a few interesting historical facts held within these countries. Foremost is that Canada has become the leading supporter of the State of Israel in the modern world. The Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, and Palau have also proven to be dependable supporters of Israel which is a fact that escapes any reasoning with the possible exception that these small Pacific Ocean islands have more integrity than any of the continents of the World outside North America. But the most impressive cote is that of the Czech Republic. What makes this vote interesting is that the Czech Republic is very likely the closest and longest ally and stout defender of the state of Israel in the World. Many people when asked who supplied weapons to Israel in 1948 during the time the nascent State of Israel fought against the combined armies of seven Arab countries and several additional militias and an internal Arab population which was shooting the Israelis from behind their lines, the answer you are most likely to receive is the United States. This misconception likely arises from the fact that President Truman was one of, if not the, first leaders to recognize Israel on May 15, 1948 when she declared her independence. What is forgotten is that immediately thereafter the United States imposed a complete arms embargo on Israel even forbidding any American company from selling Israel arms or munitions even to include bullets. The country which stepped up and almost completely by themselves supplied Israel with weapons and munitions and whatever they were able to produce and supply was Czechoslovakia. My theory on the reasoning behind the Czech support of Israel is that they identified with Israel after the way the World betrayed Czechoslovakia at the lead into World War II. During the Munich Accords Britain and France sacrificed the northern sections of Czechoslovakia ceding these lands vital to the Czech ability to defend their country to the German Nazis in the hope that doing so would appease Hitler’s lust and ambitions misreading that his goal was the whole of Europe. In attempting to avoid a war the French and British instead sacrificed Czechoslovakia by ceding the very mountain passes that would have proven near impossible for the Germans to fight their way through thus guaranteeing the conquest of the remainder of Czechoslovakia which came weeks after the agreement. Even after Hitler’s Germany rode over and crushed the remainder of Czechoslovakia, the British and French reneged on their mutual defense treaties with Czechoslovakia and made Poland their line in the sand. Czechoslovakia, and thus today’s Czech Republic understands well betrayal and sacrifice in a cowards move by those they had considered friends.

Europe will not even realize that there is a lesson for them in this vote, but yet one still does exist. The European nations who supported this vote were Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Belarus. The rest, other than the Czech Republic, took the noncommittal coward’s way out of the vote and simply abstained or did not cast a vote. When one looks back to actions taken through conventions, treaties, referendums, proclamations and the entire gauntlet of the varieties of positions and promissory that can be issued by nations in regard to intents and support for other nations or declarations of actions, there is an entire litany of such emanating from Europe which had the sole intent of establishing a Jewish State in the Middle East. The crucial center-point of these issuances was that the British Mandate Lands were to be used for the establishment of a Jewish Homeland. The one treaty which made a definitive change to these promises was the Churchill White Papers which established a second homeland out of the British Mandate. The final and important results of this agreement which was signed by the leaders of the Arab League and the Zionists was that once the 78% of the British Mandate Lands which included all of the lands east of the Jordan River were utilized to establish a Palestinian Arab homeland called Transjordan and ruled by the Hashemites, the remaining 22% consisting of all the lands west of the Jordan River and reaching to the Mediterranean Sea were to become the Jewish homeland with absolutely no further divisions. This was the promise put forward by the British and later confirmed by the French and the United States. The French signed another report which restated the results of the Churchill White Papers and the United States had a resolution passed by both houses of Congress and signed by the President thus making it a binding resolution. Europe should take away a simple truth and the rest of the World should take note of this simple truth; the Europeans, especially France and Britain, cannot be trusted to keep their word even under the stipulations of a treaty and that any promise coming from these countries is not a binding agreement but simply a statement referencing their feelings of the moment.

What are the universal lessons which can be gleaned from this vote? What is likely the most important is that the United Nations has no regard for previous treaties and promises and has become an echo chamber for the NAM (Non-Aligned Movement) which will almost without exception follow the lead of the Muslim nations and this is even more true when the subject is Israel or Jews. The United Nations Commission on Human Rights is not slanted towards singling out Israel any more than the entirety of the United Nations and the World in general is guilty of the same bias. Israel may as well stop paying dues to the United Nations even if doing so will result in their being removed from the “august” body as they have no real say and carry negligible weight when it comes to any issue even those that may involve Israel’s future. And lastly that other than the United State and Canada, not to minimize their importance, that the rest of the countries of the World which support Israel if combined into one single country would still be in the second half in lists of countries by size, population, or virtually any other measure one may care to apply with the exception of dedication to truth and honor, in these two areas these otherwise minor countries are giants.

The Fist Hatred Rises Yet Again

Way back when I was first attending religious and Hebrew school we were told how lucky Jews were today because anti-Semitism had finally been eradicated once and for all and how the Holocaust made the return of anti-Semitism impossible. Unfortunately those people were so very, very wrong. Anti-Semitism has not only returned but has once again began to pick up steam and spread like an epidemic. I began warning people, originally mostly other Jews, that I saw anti-Semitism starting to sprout and feared the day when it would catch on and become the undeterred undercurrent which would once again take society beyond the cusp and into complete insanity. Watching the news of late, it appears we have almost arrived at the point where reason dies and base hatreds take the day. And it is not solely a problem within the Arab or Muslim societies, it has once again tainted every group even to the point of infecting some Jews who now work to the detriment of their fellow Jews, and that is the exact detail I wish to condemn.

There exists a new target for anti-Semites which has been designated as proper and even given a cover of respectability, hatred of all things Israel. This phobia has found a nurturing home in many of the governments throughout Europe and is rife in the European Union and the United Nations and all the NGO’s spawned by these governments. Many are disguised as human rights groups, others call themselves protectors of the poor and unfortunate Palestinians, and there are those which claim they are simply pursuing the enforcement of International Laws. The true culprits are easy to decipher as they will aim the vast majority of their vitriol and accusations towards Israel while ignoring or finding excuses for much more flagrant violators. One such example from this week’s meetings of the European Union was provided by their Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton when she stated that Iran’s nuclear weapons program and Syria’s documented massacre of men, women and children by the Assad regime, took the back seat to the regions’ most serious problem that must be settled immediately, the Israeli intransigence to the founding of a state for the Palestinians. One must remember that this comes from the person who has been given the lead position in the negotiations with Iran over their nuclear program.

If this was but the sole example of the lunacy one might be able to excuse it as a lone act of a world gone mad. But we have another example where even the appearance of actually caring was nonexistent. This time we take a stroll over to Norway where an act of barbarism was pretty much ignored. During an Oslo High School barbecue one of the students took a coin and heated it until it was red-hot and then branded a Jewish student on the back of his neck. Where such an act might be dismissed as simple prank falling under the boys-will-be-boys category, this same student had previously been subject to being shouted down with hateful degradations such as “Jewish pigs” and “Jewish Satan” as well as having received numerous death threats. But even this is not the end of the appalling behavior accompanying this incident. After the Jewish student had been branded with a fire-hot coin there was no reprimand for the miscreant and there also was no need to inform the student’s mother or other relative. An Associate Dean of the Wiesenthal Center, Rabbi Abraham Cooper queried, “Just what else must take place before school authorities stand up for rights of a Jewish child in a Norwegian school? We demand that authorities hold accountable the perpetrators of this hate crime and those in charge of educating Norway’s school children offer a safe environment for every student-including Jewish kids,” Yes, indeed, what would it take before action or even the first act of human decency would be shown. It begs the question of how such a horrid deed simply went without any apparent notice. Well, to be honest, there was a response to the fire branding at the barbecue by a teacher who told the Norwegian-born attacker, “You’re mad.” Well, that should take care of such barbarity and assure that it does not reoccur. According to the student’s mother, after constant harassment of her son two years ago, the school did nothing to intervene. In a previous interview with the NRK broadcasting system in 2010 she was quoted saying, “I see this avoidance as a dangerous development among both ethnic Norwegian and immigrant groups. And that nobody, neither teachers nor principals, intervene in this matter.”

This week had other news items where Jews or Israel were the target of derogatory remarks, violent actions, and other acts singling Jews out for victimization. The Swedish Twitter account was utilized this week during what was supposed to be a drive to promote tourism to post pejorative comments about Jews. The Egyptian campaign for President has included anti-Israel themes as one of the largest and most mentioned subjects. Protesters from the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanction) movement demanded that Queen Elizabeth decline the 35.6 karat diamond placed in the Tower of London to mark her 60 years on the throne because of its affiliation with the Steinmetz family, staunch supporters of Israeli soldiers. And there were the usual notes in the news that things in Syria could take a turn for the worse and expand to include Israel. The originating story behind the Israel theme was the fact that Minister of the Knesset Kara stated that Israel was willing to treat civilians from Syria who might seek medical attention at the Israel-Syria border. Minister Kara is a Druse Arab and has many contacts with the Druze villagers who reside on both sides of the border. Minister Kara also received numerous pictures and other evidence of the use of chemical weapons by the Assad forces.

These are simply examples from this past week. The reality of the problem is that this was an average week and such news items can be easily documented almost every week of the year, and all too often such lists would be considerably longer. One has to wonder if the hatred of Jews will ever become unacceptable for all of humankind. I often wonder exactly what it would take to finally end anti-Semitism as it has become obvious that the sacrifice of approximately six million Jewish lives in the Holocaust was insufficient a shock to put anti-Semitism to an end. So, I ask, what will it take short of the coming of the Messiah to allow the Jewish people, a small, almost insignificant number of people who make up less than one-quarter-of-one-percent of the world’s people, the chance to live in peace and tranquility and not have to constantly look over their shoulder for a mob carrying pitchforks and always to keep one suitcase with the most meager of items necessary to restart life once driven from their homes. That has been exactly what follows as night follows day and fall follows summer throughout the past five millennium of their existence. What will it take?
