Hamas Irks Egyptian Peace Delegation

There are ways to pursue peace which are well understood and there are ways to completely ruin any hope for peace which are equally well understood. From the recent series of events, one can only assume that Hamas and friends are about as interested in making peace, even with using Egyptian go-betweens, as they are in living peacefully with Israel and developing their economy and assist the Gazan population lead normative lives. There are reasons why Hamas and friends divert, plunder, misappropriate, loot and steal over three-fourths of all aid, monies, building materials and almost everything else using total disregard for the betterment of their society or the comfort of its people to have decent, if any, housing using these ill-gotten-gains to supply their terror and war production, build infiltration tunnels, construct military infrastructure and to advance their own financial gain. The friends of Hamas include Islamic Jihad, Islamic State and numerous other terrorist or criminal groups. They share two main commonalities, hatred of Israel and the Jews and a disregard for the well-being of the residents of Gaza. This was made excessively evident within the past week. The events unfolded around Hamas and their scheduled meeting with an Egyptian mediating team working to find some middle-ground within which Hamas and friends could live for a hoped extended time with Israel in peace and quiet, especially the quiet as the weekly rioting along the border has continued into just short of one year. We will use the words of an Egyptian mediator as reported to us here.

“At the beginning of the meeting, the atmosphere was very relaxed,” the Egyptian official told Israel Hayom’s Daniel Sirioti. “We had just returned from Israel with answers, we estimated that Hamas would accept them and allow us to begin a stable, long-term peace. A few minutes later, one of the Egyptian delegation’s aides entered the room looking worried, and gave the delegation leaders his cellular phone.”
“The smiles immediately turned into frowns, and senior delegates turned to Hamas leader Yahyah Sinwar and yelled at him: ‘Where do you think you’ll end up with your double play? We’re sitting here to finalize a peace agreement with Israel, and behind our backs you allow your people to fire missiles at Tel Aviv??’
“‘If Israel decides to start a wide-scale operation in Gaza, this time we’re not going to do anything to stop the Israeli attacks. Even if Israel decides to bring down your rule in Gaza by assassinating every single one of you, while they reconquer Gaza. Egypt and its regional allies will not lift a finger to stop the Israeli response.’”

You definitely read that correctly, somewhere within the military command of the terror forces in Gaza from Hamas and friends decided that perhaps it would assist with the peace efforts if they fired a couple of rockets in the direction of Tel Aviv. The only controls over where these projectiles might strike are the functionality of each rocket as quality control has been an issue at times, the range of the rocket itself, and whether or not the Iron Dome intercepts them, at which point they fall relatively harmlessly to the ground. The IDF reported that one rocket was intercepted by the Iron Dome system with the remains falling in northern Tel Aviv and that there was an explosion reported in the city of Or Yehudah near Tel Aviv. Fortunately, no injuries or damage were reported. Islamic Jihad terrorist organization claimed responsibility for the rocket launches which bares full acknowledgement. Islamic Jihad is allied with Hamas and the two terror groups often work together and just as often work independently. Islamic Jihad is also tightly aligned with Iran, while Hamas is more loosely aligned with Iran. Hamas is more independent of Iran than Islamic Jihad and Islamic Jihad takes orders directly from Tehran as well as any IRGC command officer. Whether this launching on Tel Aviv was ordered by Iran or was a means used by Hamas to sabotage the peace negotiations while retaining sufficient deniability blaming Islamic Jihad as acting independently without coordinating with Hamas. This could also be the leading edge of Hamas and friends testing the waters to see how far they can go attacking Israel with everything from rockets to incendiary balloons, from explosive kites to rolling burning tires at the border fence or from sniper fire to even infiltration with the intent to kidnap and murder Israeli civilians. This has been a standard means of getting away with murder used by the Palestinian Authority as well; it is called attacking during peace talks and claiming that the attacks were rogue elements and not ordered by their leadership who claim complete ignorance as to the attack. This ploy is so overused that it should not surprise the Egyptians and definitely not surprise the Israelis.

Attacking while pretending to negotiate in hopes of reaching an agreement which would permit a period of peace, this has proven in the past to work in the favor of the Palestinian Arabs. They attack during peace talks and the world warns Israel not to retaliate or take any punitive measures because it may upset the chances for peace to be negotiated. The Arab Palestinian terror leaders know they are not really interested in peace. The Europeans, United Nations and United States State Department are all aware that the Arab Palestinian terror leaders are not interested in peace. There is another item that all these parties are aware of, that the one common denominator is the destruction of Israel and an end to the remaining Jews left on the planet. Of course, such talk is never stated loudly, it is more of a shared secret which is not all that secret. It became known after the Second Intifada that the explosion of suicide bombers and other terror attacks had nothing to do with the stated excuse that Ariel Sharon had dared to walk upon the Temple Mount. When the IDF was required to enter the Palestinian Arab areas and bring the violence to an end, they also took control of the Palestinian Authority’s main offices in Eastern Jerusalem. There was a treasure trove of papers detailing the planned attacks which were already ready to go while Yasser Arafat was playing President Clinton and Ehud Barak at Camp David and then Paris and beyond all the while knowing that the terror war was planned with bomb-belts readied and the suicide bombers all lined up and ready to go the limit. The Second Intifada cost over a thousand Israelis their lives and thousands more with horrible and often debilitating injuries as in these attacks they had impregnated the belts with nuts, screws, nails, shards of glass and soaked these materials in rat poison to make for more horrendous injuries.

So, this may have been a ploy by Hamas to throw a wrench into the peace talks being carried out through Egyptian mediators, or it could be Islamic Jihad attempting to blow up the peace talks, or it could be Islamic Jihad ordered by Iran to toss rockets on Tel Aviv into the mix to harm the peace talks, the one item which is consistent is that such actions, as noted by the Egyptian mediator, is not helpful and only makes reaching a settlement that much more difficult. We see this also as a test of where exactly the Israeli resolve to respond to such attacks three weeks ahead of the elections. Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu has an unenviable task choosing precisely the right response which inoculates him from being called too soft from political groups to his right, actually more Zionist or nationalist would be more accurate as there is no definitive right and left in Israeli politics. There is a left, a far left, actual communists, the Arab list, Zionists, Religious, Haredi (an entire host of groups included within), Religious Zionist and Secular Nationalist. The media are the ones along with some of the political class attempting to dumb down the many parties, as it is simpler to use generic terms such as left and right than to actually define terms and explain the subtle differences. Still, Prime Minister Netanyahu also has to avoid too harsh a response which might cause world condemnation which could cloud the election picture as well. Finally, the one thing Bibi can be assured of having happen is that Gantz and Lapid will insist that he was far too soft and they would have been more assertive and would have gone in and cleaned out Gaza.

Two Rockets Fired at Tel Aviv from Gaza

Two Rockets Fired at Tel Aviv from Gaza

The Blue-White Party of Gantz, his fellow generals, and Lapid main aim in the lead-up to election day is they want to draw as many voters as they can from the nationalist camps, both secular (Likud, New Right, Yisrael Beiteinu) and religious (Jewish Home, National Union, Zehut, Tkuma, Otzma Yehudit) by making all the sounds and noise one would expect the farthest nationalistic party might utilize. What gives them away is their wording is often somewhat clumsy as often occurs when somebody is pretending to be something they are not. But attacks such as the one on Tel Aviv provide these charlatans with the perfect soapbox to stand upon and crow about how they will be tougher on terrorists than Bibi. What is a real shame is that General Gantz when approved to be Chief of Staff by, of all people, Bibi Netanyahu, he proved to be an embarrassment often appearing to be asleep at the switch or ill prepared at best. The IDF also suffered under his tutelage which took nearly five years of intensive training and cleaning out the mess Gantz left behind with Headquarters Company in complete disarray and no operational plans ready for contingencies, something the Chief of Staff is wholly responsible for overseeing and monitoring as those are the plans which one pulls out when faced with a situation requiring a military response. Time and again, these were lacking while Gantz served as Chief of Staff. This should not be the person we want in the catbird seat should a war come to our doorstep, at least one other than Syria and more targeted at Israel.

Israel Fault and Lack of Flexibility End Negotiations

The evidence keeps rolling in with one presumably credible source after another pointing the finger of blame on Israel over the latest failed peace initiatives. United States Secretary of State Kerry was probably one of the closest people to this last round of talks which he negotiated into place with promises from both the Israelis and the Palestinians that the negotiations would proceed for nine months and would likely end with a resultant peace by or before April 29, 2014. The initial agreement appeared to be one-sided though there were demands made of both sides. From Israel, Secretary Kerry gained the concession demanded by the Palestinians as their demand required for them to even consider entering negotiations with the Israelis. This concession consisted of the Israelis eventually releasing one-hundred-four terrorist prisoners who had been incarcerated since before the September 1993 signing of the Oslo Accords. These prisoners had been convicted of carrying out or planning terror attacks responsible for multiple fatalities and near countless injuries of which many caused permanent physical impairment as well as a wider amount of mental difficulties. Many of the terrorists to be released were serving at least one life sentence and a fair number more than one such sentence. These terrorists were to be released in four groups of twenty-six and each subsequent release was predicated on advancements achieved through the negotiations.

On the Palestinian side, Secretary Kerry managed to arrange for them to agree to meet the Israelis providing the terrorist prisoner releases could be arranged. It was at the outset of the negotiations that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu made the demand that the Palestinians recognize Israel as the home of and for the Jewish People. From the start Palestinian Chairman Abbas refused to grant this demand exclaiming repeatedly that neither he, nor the Palestinian leadership nor the Arab World would ever recognize Israel as the state for the Jewish People. Chairman Abbas went further stating that it was impossible for a nation to be based upon a religious idea thusly the Jewish People could not be the basis for a nation anywhere on Earth. Despite his stating such, Abbas also held to the idea that any lands which would result in being under Palestinian control as a result of the negotiations would necessarily be cleansed of any Jewish population residing there. Another demand made by Chairman Abbas was that Israel would necessarily be forced to accept resettlement of as many as six-million Palestinian refugees and their descendants, in some cases four generations of family would have gained that right under the rules which are applied by UNRWA and are reserved only for the definition of refugee status for the Palestinians. Also from the outset of the negotiations, despite the Palestinians choosing to demand the terrorist prisoner releases and forgo a building freeze, Abbas and the other Palestinian leadership constantly demanded that Secretary Kerry pressure and force the Israelis into also enacting a building freeze. This request was even spoken of disapprovingly by Secretary Kerry though he eventually sided with the Palestinians on this issue making it an additional demand on the Israelis if the negotiations were to continue beyond the initial nine months. Secretary Kerry also sided with the Palestinians when he posited that it was unnecessary and foolish that the Israelis were demanding that the Palestinians recognize Israel as the home of the Jewish People. His reasoning was that it should be sufficient that the United States recognized Israel as being the state for the Jewish People and after all the Palestinians and even Arafat had recognized this fact though no actual quote was ever produced, let alone confirmed.

Despite there being imposed at the insistence of Secretary Kerry a gag order making the progress and machinations of the peace negotiations secret and not released to the press or public, there were almost constant little bits of information leaked by the Palestinian side. Often accompanying these leaked pieces of information were demands of the Israelis which either had not been discussed due to their improbability of being agreed upon or had been refused by the Israelis and the Palestinians believed they would gain the Israeli surrender by appealing to the world in general. When these tactics appeared to have been generally failing and with about ten weeks left before the April 29 deadline for the talks to have reached at the very least a framework agreement, the Palestinian negotiators staged a walkout of the talks declaring they were done with the intransigence of the Israelis. This denunciation was despite the fact that the Palestinian side has also refused to compromise on even a single item during the talks. After a big fuss was made publically, the Palestinians returned to the negotiations even more stridently defending against any need for them to offer any compromise on any subject. Meanwhile there were constant comments to the press and in general decrying the unfairness of the talks and how Secretary Kerry and his main staff were being used by Jewish forces within the United States government. Abbas was constantly noting that he and the Palestinian negotiators were remaining at the negotiating table solely to gain the release of the final twenty-six terrorist prisoners and were planning on “blowing-up” the negotiations immediately after receiving these final prisoner releases.

Also a little earlier than the start of the Palestinian threats to depart the talks Secretary Kerry lowered his expectations from reaching an actual peace agreement to establishing a framework and then extending the negotiations and using the framework as the guide in these additional negotiations. It was towards this end that the American team began negotiating with the Israelis in order to find some manner or path that would permit Israel to release hundreds, if not thousands, of additional terrorist prisoners including Marwan Barghouti, one of the worst of the worst terror planners who was responsible for some of the most horrific terror attacks in Israeli history. It was for these crimes that Mr. Barghouti was serving five life sentences. In addition to gaining the release of the additional terror prisoners the Palestinians were also demanding a complete and comprehensive Israeli building freeze by Israel. All the time that these demands were being issued, the Palestinians continued to threaten to walk away from the table and then recant and restate their remaining solely to attain the last twenty-six terrorists release before bolting. With there having been a complete lack of advancement resulting from the negotiations and the Palestinians continuously taking stands in complete opposition to every demand made by the Israelis while claiming that Israel was causing the talks to fail by making unreasonable demands and refusing to meet any of their obligations as were presented during the talks by the Palestinians. After weeks of threats and bluster from the Palestinians the final release date approached and the Palestinians added to their demand four additional prisoners released as well as the inclusion of Israeli Arabs who were incarcerated for terrorist crimes that caused an Israeli response to delay the final release and demand some return concession from the Palestinians due to the change in the Palestinian demands on the final releasing of terror prisoners. The Palestinians refused but the Israelis remained firm in their demand that the final release be totally renegotiated in order to accommodate the additional demands placed on this final Israeli concession warranting such a reexamination of the terms. This is what led the Palestinians to apply to fifteen United Nations and international treaties, conferences and agencies by the Palestinians as their first step to legitimacy through alternate means and without having to negotiate a settlement with the Israelis.

When Secretary of State Kerry appeared before the United States Senate committee he aimed the lion’s share of the blame for the talks failing on the Israelis though mentioning almost in passing that some of the actions by the Palestinians being unhelpful. But it was definitely the Israeli withholding the final release and their refusal to enact a building freeze as well as granting the terrorist prisoner releases and even announcing the request for tenders to build several hundred apartments within southern Jerusalem, building which the Palestinians had been informed were to be built before the negotiations commenced when they chose the terrorist releases over a building freeze. Of course the Palestinians felt that they should have been gifted a building freeze and did not understand why they should have to choose only one concession when there were so many concessions they desired to force from Israel. Obviously it was the fault of the Israelis by their demand that the Palestinians make at the least some compromise in return for the numerous compromises, concessions and allowances made by Israel, and not only during this session of talks but overall the negotiations for the past twenty-plus years. The Europeans also offered to assist getting the talks back on track and were implying that it was Israel’s responsibility to make concessions and agree to demands of the Palestinians in order to allow for their return to negotiations without losing face or standing. Of course the Arab League has completely backed the Palestinians and condemned Israel. What can be expected going forward will be the agencies, treaties and commissions which the Palestinians have applied will all agree to receive them and grant them full recognition of statehood. After they have pocketed these recognitions we can expect them to apply to another hundred or so followed by demanding recognition from the United Nations General Assembly and possibly seek membership by applying to the Security Council, especially if they can assure themselves that the United States will restrain from using their veto power. Whatever Israel does from now going forward is of little consequence as the initial stone had been skipped across the still waters and the ripples will only sell and become tsunamis with possibly horrendous consequences. Eventually the world will need to decide exactly how far they are willing to take Palestinian statehood. Will they be willing to intervene with troops and starting a war against Israel in order to retain the narrow strip of land coating the shores of the eastern Mediterranean? It is something we all should fear as such a war would not end well for anyone, least of all Israel.

Secretary of State Kerry Declares War on Israel

Perhaps the best beginning for this report would be to simply quote Secretary of State Kerry in his own words. He declared in an interview with Israeli Channel 2 Television where he warned of “chaos” and a “third intifada” should the “peace talks” with the Palestinian Authority fail. He went into more detail claiming and asking, “Failure of the talks will increase Israel’s isolation in the world. The alternative to getting back to the talks is a potential of chaos. I mean, does Israel want a third intifada?” He continued threatening Israel stating, “I believe that if we do not resolve the issues between Palestinians and Israelis; if we do not find a way to find peace, there will be an increasing isolation of Israel. There will be an increasing campaign of delegitimization of Israel that’s taking place on an international basis. That if we do not resolve the question of the settlements and who lives where and how and what rights they have; if we don’t end the presence of Israeli soldiers perpetually within the West Bank, then there will be an increasing feeling that if we cannot get peace with a leadership that is committed to nonviolence, you may wind up with leadership that is committed to violence.” These threatening words came despite Secretary Kerry claiming that he has made “significant progress” in the last 24 hours. Kerry finished the day by telling reporters in Amman, Jordan after meeting with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, “We made significant progress in our discussions about a couple of areas of concern in the panorama of the concerns we have.” Secretary Kerry’s final words were, “It is important for us to be able to proceed carefully and quietly.”

The change in his tone at the end of the day makes one wonder why he decided to use such threatening tones and language when speaking to Israelis on his interview on Israeli television yet spoke soothing words in Jordan where his comments would most certainly reach the Palestinian people. Could it be that the White House has decided that Israel is at fault for any lack of progress and that the Palestinians have done everything in their power to make peace possible? Does President Obama really believe the accusations coming from the Palestinian leadership that Israel with their settlements has made making peace impossible and that the Palestinians are the true seekers of peace while Israel which has made countless concession over the years while receiving only violence, death, terrorist bombings, rocket attacks, rock attacks on their highways and paid a price in blood beyond measure in the search for peace are standing in the way of reaching a peaceful settlement? Israel returned the entirety of the Sinai Peninsula for peace, offered the entirety of Samaria and Judea to Jordan for peace but Jordan released their claims to these lands remitting them to Israel only to change that pledge years later at the urgings of Yasser Arafat and the Arab League pledging the historic heartland of the original Hebrews lands which made up the kingdoms of Israel and Judea long before the ideas of Christianity or Islam had broken forth onto the arena of Earthly religions. Israel has sacrificed blood and land for peace and would move everything and anything necessary within reason for a true and lasting peace. The Palestinians, on the other hand, demand that whatever peace they agree to with Israel will be temporary as they insist that they retain the right to continue their resistance until the entirety of their lands are liberated and Israel has been erased and supplanted by Palestine and the Jews have been removed be it by being exiled from their homelands yet another time or simply slaughtered in a frenzy of jubilation at the eradication of Israel as anything other than purely Muslim Arab lands. Those are the truths the world ignores time and time again.

Some have asked why such obvious truths are ignored but the answer is not all that difficult to discern. That truth is that the world is aware that Israel is willing and has and will continue to make sacrifices in the name of peace no matter how absurd or hurtful those sacrifices may be while the Palestinians when pushed to make any concession for peace claim that as a bereaved people they must never be imposed upon and should such insane request be pursued any further they threaten violence which they will commit whether they are pressured or left to their own devices. The world realizes that the Israelis act as a civilized nation while the Palestinians destroy even those things gifted them in order to allow for their economic betterment. Such was the case with the greenhouses in Gaza which were immediately torn apart when Israel donated them in order to provide a ready and operating business to aid the Palestinians and instead made into rocket launchers and rockets with which to fire into Israel in attempts to murder civilians or whomever was unfortunate enough to be where these explosive projectiles struck ground. The world is aware that the Palestinians have utilized ambulances to move terrorists into positions to launch ambushes and also to move equipment and armaments with which to attack Israelis but nobody cares to pursue justice. On the other side, whenever the Palestinians cry that the Israelis have destroyed their olive trees or invaded the sanctity of their al-Aqsa Mosque, which entails any Jew being permitted to enter onto the Temple Mount, the world rushes to denounce Israel and do whatever the Palestinians demand as retribution to assuage their hurt feelings. That sometimes appears to be the only foreign policy that many European parliamentarians and politicians are able to pursue such and lately appears to have further infected the White House.

President Obama has often claimed to be the best friend that Israel has ever had in the White House. If the words spoken today by Secretary of State Kerry are indicative of the feelings and policies coming from President Obama and the White House, then please stop being Israel’s best friend and simply try to be an honest broker seeking a true and honest peace. I realize that seeking anything honestly may be a new experience for President Obama as he appears to have some difficulty with the truth. President Obama is especially talented at knowing nothing, much like Sgt. Shultz from Hogan’s Heroes. What many may not know about the gentleman who played the part of Sgt. Shultz, John Banner, is he spent part of World War II in Auschwitz as he was Jewish and somehow managed to survive, a miracle in and of itself.  But back to the serious subject at hand, what exactly is it that President Obama honestly wishes Israel to do concerning the Palestinians. We all heard his early first term demands that Israel return back behind the Green Line, that Israel freeze all building beyond the Green Line even including Eastern Jerusalem, for Israel to release terrorists in order to make an offer towards peace that the Palestinians would understand, and then there were the multiple insults against Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu which included but were not limited to making Netanyahu enter and leave the White House by a side entrance instead of using the customary front entrance as virtually every visitor, refusing to hold a joint press appearance as is customary for heads of state after meeting with the President in the White House or anywhere else, deserting him to have dinner with his family and not only not inviting Netanyahu to join them but instructing him to consult with his aides and let the President know when they had decided to meet the demands President Obama had laid out which are unknown but were likely the same as those being demanded by Palestinian Authority Chairman Abbas, refusing to meet with Netanyahu in New York when both were there for the opening ceremonies for the United Nations General Assembly though President Obama did have enough time to spend close to an hour with the hosts of the television show “The View” which was being filmed in New York at the same time and finally President Obama when visited by Israeli President Peres, probably the one person in Israel who might actually agree with the views of President Obama, he met him in the Blair House across the street from the White House instead of in the White House as is customary. Other than these and numerous other statements and actions by President Obama and many within his administration, President Obama might have actually slipped a few kind remarks in about Israel in order to appease some audience. There was the famous line during the campaign where Senator Obama speaking to the AIPAC convention claimed that Jerusalem would remain the undivided capital of Israel; a statement that he backed away from and then completely contradicted numerous times going forward starting within hours of making the statement. One can basically figure that if President Obama or most of those in his administration speak kindly and in favor of Israel they are either making a grievous mistake or are on some mind altering drugs, but one can be assured they do not actually mean those statements.
