America Paying Price for Impossible Election Laws

Almost every article bemoaning the historically pathetic choice between the two presumptive candidates for President for the next potentially four years have almost always prayed, pleaded, hoped or simply called for a savior to run as a third party candidate. Almost equal numbers have done so from the right and from the left and possibly from the center. Whatever their politics they are being disingenuous as they are just as aware of election laws as we are, but as we ran a third party campaign we will try and be understanding and explain some of the problems with this idea. There is no way by the closing of the ballot cycle any person or even party, including the two main parties if their elite so desired and took on the task, could conceivably get their third party or independent candidate onto the ballot in half, let alone all fifty states. We spend well over half and likely eighty percent of our efforts and funding simply to get our name on the ballot in one congressional district in Maryland and that was with volunteers from two strong issues groups making herculean efforts. It took every ounce of effort by both the pro-life and gun issues groups, churches and individuals just to achieve ballot access. Even with that the entire mechanisms of election law still closed us off of every televised debate and the media barely paid us any notice despite our efforts. Doing the same state wide in every state is beyond possibility as such efforts would have required starting over a year earlier than now, especially when many states require turning in the signatures for validation six months ahead of the election and then the main party of one or both parties will then attempt to get as many signatures invalidated in order to block your efforts which is why we collected a good twenty percent more signatures than were required.

The two main parties have each other to blame for these draconian rules which are designed to prevent a popularist candidate from attaining ballot access and thus protecting the two main party candidates from such a challenge. Many of these laws were written over the years as a reaction to the death of the Whig Party and its eventual replacement by the Republican Party who then worked with the established Democrat Party to prevent exactly what the Republic Party had done from ever happening again. The Democrats were more than glad to assist in these blockading efforts as they did not desire going the way of the Whig Party. As the years continued these two parties of the people made sure the people could never ever change their minds and bring another party to the fore on Election Day. But don’t take our word for this, simply research or request the rules for ballot access from your local government election board. For those wishing a quicker guide they can look here or here. As far as receiving the number of ballot signatures ask yourself one question and answer it honestly, would you sign a petition for somebody to be placed on your state ballot for President of the United States if somebody asked you for your signature the next time you visit any shopping mall or at a desk outside the grocery store? If you are honest you will admit you would brush them off or simply pretend you did not hear or see them if walking a good distance from them was not an option and that is the reaction of almost every other person even if the candidate themselves is there for you to meet, and the candidate for President cannot be in all fifty states at one time, let alone every grocery store and mall in every state. The size of the effort to even get sufficient people canvassing to get signatures by manning booths at stores or going door-to-door is next to impossible. So, that is out of the question but alas there is hope.

Donald Trump & Hillary Clinton

Donald Trump & Hillary Clinton

The hope will, oddly enough, be provided by the candidates themselves unless they are extremely careful. This hope is more likely to be potentially possible for the Trump campaign as Hillary Clinton has the support of her party power brokers and elites, alas her path through super delegates at the convention. At some point, likely the convention, each candidate will necessarily roll out their choice for Vice President and alas the party savior as all the elite of either party need do once their candidate gains the way into the White House is impeach them with the anxious and willing assistance of the other party and the Vice President, presumably a more sober choice than the primary electoral process produced. Both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton will be choosing a running mate from within their respective party and will want a person with a fair degree of electability as choosing a complete doofus would be counterproductive making their likely electability be even more of a negative. Considering the negatives of each candidate, their Vice Presidential nominee will very likely be far more popular with the voting public. One might even find the elite of either party touting the impeachment of the party candidate simply to place the Vice Presidential nominee in the white house as soon after Inauguration Day as the Congress can act. Then again, it is possible that each candidate will be able to find a running mate with even less appeal or equal revulsion as they are causing their party’s elite.

Some have probably by now decided to call us on that one and will require some potential nominees which would prevent just such a situation for both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Truth of the matter is finding just such a person would be difficult but is potentially possible and in the spirit of helping the candidates out we will try to come up with a few suggestions and we would welcome your picks or critiques as well. Hillary Clinton could nominate Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Ben Rhodes, Steny H. Hoyer, Alan Stuart “Al” Franken or a host of others who are currently in the House of Representatives or Senate not to mention potential governors and other party delinquents. Donald Trump could nominate Ted Cruz as the party elite had great trouble coalescing around Mr. Cruz even as he became their last hope to stop Trump. There is also John Kasich, John S. McCain, Rand Paul, Ron Paul, Jim Bridenstine (trust us as he is our Representative) or a host of Hollywood people the Donald claims he is in with. There are many choices or there would be the ultimate evil move by them, they each pick the other as their running mate, that would protect them guaranteed. Well, yes, it is unlikely but face it, when it comes to negatives those two are very hard to beat.

Honest Answer to Biden’s War in the Middle East Challenge

During last week’s Vice Presidential debate the Vice President challenged Paul Ryan with the accusation that he wanted to place the United States into yet another war in the Middle East. This was one of Biden’s snarky interruptions but was also an opportunity missed by Mr. Ryan. Romney’s Vice Presidential candidate should have grabbed that challenge and backed Biden off making him pay a price for such a bare faced insult. Paul Ryan could have started by saying the obvious, “Mr. Biden, nobody who is in their right mind ever desires war and will do anything within reason to avoid a war and nobody who is being honest would insult another human being by falsely accusing them of desiring a war where some of the best young men and women and the finest from among their fellow citizens may lose their lives.” From there he could then lay out what is the real pack of troubles that now exist in the Middle East and point to the actions and inactions of both the Obama and Bush Administrations which led to this situation where such an accusation actually has any foundation in reality.

Paul Ryan could have pointed out the increased terrorism and suicide bombings that have spread throughout Iraq mostly due to President Obama’s inability to negotiate a withdrawal policy which allowed for the remaining American forces to be free to continue to assist in the fight against the terrorists instead of being isolated in one base in the middle of the dessert where their only function is as targets. He could have pointed to the fact that al-Qaeda has been resurgent within Iraq and that Iraqi President Hamid Karzai has not only been allowed but very likely pressured into the awaiting arms of Iran and is now working with Iran in supplying Bashir Assad in Syria with the weapons and munitions with which Syrians are being slaughtered. Mr. Ryan could press the fact that the majority of the arms, munitions, and other military hardware that President Obama’s Administration has sent either directly or through intermediary allies to both Libya and Syria have ended up in the hands of Salafists, Islamists and even al-Qaeda. He could have referred to the disaster that has swept across the Muslim World centered mostly in North Africa would be better called the Arab Winter as the results have definitely not been an Arab Spring. Mr. Ryan could point out the exodus from Egypt that has occurred by those Coptic Christian Egyptians who were fortunate enough to afford leaving and the riots aided by government forces of Egypt that have burned down Coptic communities, churches, schools, homes and businesses.

Ryan could also point to the new demands that have become front and center of the Palestinian demands as preconditions that Israel must be required to meet before Palestinian authority President will allow negotiations to continue. The first being President Obama calling for a building freeze in the settlements and Jerusalem which came out of nowhere and had never even been broached as an idea, let alone a demand on Israel. And his statement that the 1967 Lines, which were the 1949 Armistice Lines, be used as the starting point for borders with only land swaps which are approved by the Palestinian Authority would be allowed to redraw these lines. These are the lines of the front at the end of fighting as per United Nations agreement and which the Arabs themselves demanded never be utilized as borders during their negotiations in 1948-9. Now, every time Mahmoud Abbas speaks his first two demands out of his mouth are for a building freeze in all of the West Bank and Jerusalem and a return to the 1967 borders, he does not even use the milder terminology of Lines. He could then have asked Biden if this was how he and the President defined being the greatest friends Israel has ever had in the White House.

There is a laundry list of other missteps and outright disasters that preceded this past week’s explosion throughout the Middle East. Included in this explosion was an attack by al-Qaeda on our Consulate and the Safe House located miles away that took the lives of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three Americans attached to our Embassy staff. This is the same al-Qaeda that the President and Joe Biden have been touting died with Osama bin Laden who the President ordered assassinated in the boldest move by any President. Then there was the rioting that broke through the perimeter of our Embassy in Cairo, Egypt in which the American Flag was torn down and replaced with the Black Flag of the Salafists and al-Qaeda. Why not ask Mr. Biden to explain whether we are fighting against the Taliban or seeking to return the Taliban to power in Afghanistan. If we are fighting the Taliban, then why are we negotiating with the Taliban about including them in the Afghan government? Ryan should impress before allowing Biden to sputter an answer, “And do not tell me about the existence of a peaceful branch of the Taliban. There is no such entity any more than there is a peaceful Muslim Brotherhood which we are finding out to our dismay ever since President Obama threw our somewhat less than perfect ally Mubarak to the Islamist wolves.”

Time permitting, which this obviously might have gone a tad long on Mr. Ryan’s two minute limit, Mr. Ryan could have pointed out that it was the President’s call not to aid the students and large sector of the Iranian people when they rose up to protest what they saw as fraudulent reelection of President Ahmadinejad and instead to back the Ayatollahs and the madman masquerading as the Iranian President. Paul Ryan could have pointed to the leaks from the Administration which undermined Israeli efforts to make available assets which would be vital if Iran were to cause a war with Israel either through their terror proxies in Lebanon, Gaza or the Sinai Peninsula or by making a direct strike with WMDs or conventional weapons tipping their ballistic missiles. Mr. Ryan could state the obvious truth that the sole reason that Vice President Biden could even make such an accusation that the Republican candidates might get the United States in a war in the Middle East was directly due to the complete inadequacy of the Obama Administration’s muddled, addled and utterly failed policies in the Middle East, which are reflective of their entire foreign policy, if one can call the directionless policies of comprehensive responsibility avoidance a foreign policy. Then again, perhaps being the more intellectual, even tempered, mild speaking, but familial rather than aloof, and rational candidate was the best path and the one with which Paul Ryan is obviously far more comfortable.

My Problem with the Republican Ticket

I am certainly not alone in my discomfort with the Republican ticket for the coming election. Like what are likely scores upon scores of other conservatives I would have rather seen a Ryan/Romney ticket rather than the Romney/Ryan ticket we are presented. Of course we were not presented Representative Ryan as a choice to lead the ticket during the primaries which is not something we can change now. My guess is Mr. Ryan likely preferred to keep his life simple and not subject to the rigors and attacks that accompany the primary system and will be felt more by Mr. Romney at the top of the ticket than it will for Mr. Ryan as his running mate. As stated a number of times, my hopes were for John Bolton to run as I have a feeling that many Americans would actually respect and be attracted to a politician who does not candy coat anything and simply bludgeons everyone within earshot with the brutal honesty of unvarnished truth. But had Paul Ryan chosen to brave the gauntlet of the primaries it would most certainly have elevated my excitement levels. I guess sometimes we have to take what life deals us and do the best we can with what we are presented.

There will be some interesting sessions in the Senate with Paul Ryan as the gavel holder and having the potential to cast the tie breaking vote if there should ever be a deadlock of a tie vote. Unfortunately, I have my doubts that Paul Ryan will take the liberties of expressing his opinions or joining the debates no matter how strong his feelings or how tempting it may be for him to impart a piece of his financial and budgetary wisdom. Mr. Ryan is going to make the Vice Presidential debates somewhat more intriguing and will present whoever is chosen to formulate the questions one momentous challenge in formatting questions to Vice President Biden’s strengths and as far afield of Mr. Ryan’s comfort range. I guess we can all look forward to the debate between Mr. Gaffe and Mr. Knowledgeable. Somehow, I foresee the Democrats doing all within their power to avoid holding a Vice Presidential debate or scheduling it for a Wednesday morning around about 10:45 EST on some obscure cable and satellite channel. Even if that is their decision, I will take the time to watch it as it promises to be some of the best comedy and scariest predictors of a future possibility should we reelect Joe Biden to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency.

I must admit that the Romney candidacy did not fill me with any real desire to break down walls in order to elect Mitt Romney as President. When Mitt Romney stated after the Supreme Court upheld Obama Care that he intended to replace it and not simply repeal it left me feeling cold inside. I do not want any form of Obama Care or even Romney Care or anything which gives the government more influence over my healthcare. This is another reason that having Mitt Romney choose Paul Ryan as his running mate rekindled a modicum of hope that perhaps Romney could be influenced and steered away from replacing Obama Care and simply doing away with all of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, every single word, comma, period, exclamation point, heading and footnote. As bad as the medical care parts of this law are, there are even more hidden evils buried within it’s over a thousand pages which will facilitate damaging regulations and give the government new powers and remove some critical restrictions from government powers that also need to be killed. One such item which unfortunately does not have a huge effect on my life is that effective Jan. 1, 2012, any gold bullion or coin transactions is to be reported to the government by dealers if the amount of the transaction is over six-hundred dollars. It really does include provisions for what is a veritable death panels deciding who is allowed to receive what treatments according to some formulae. Also found by a little research is it allows for the Government to have direct access to your bank accounts for electronic funds transfers in order to assure payments, and there will never be any mistakes which will end in horror stories for those caught in such inconveniences. And I assure you there is a lot more and some has little or nothing to do with your healthcare or treatments. Paul Ryan will, hopefully, assist in steering Romney away from replace and towards repeal, plain and simple repeal.

I am sure there are some from the upper crust of the Republican Party who are having questions about how Romney could choose such a maverick to be his running mate. There are likely those who are claiming that Ryan will be as big a disaster as they believed McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin turned out to be. I thought Sarah Palin was the most attractive thing about the candidacy of John McCain. I guess I had better not wait for the Republican Party to offer me a job as an adviser in the near future, if ever. But, in all seriousness, I am fully thrilled with the Republican choice for a Vice Presidential candidate and predict that having Ryan on the ticket may turn out to be the best turn of events in all of this year’s election moves and posturing; but could we possibly change the ticket to Ryan/Romney. Please?
